Just a quick post to say it's back and will be for the foreseeable future!  /no1 Many thanks for all those who supported us.

Two questions:

1. Isn't it better to host a MediaWiki based wiki instead of Fandom? (didn't even Minecraft and Hollow Knight's communities asked people to stop going to Fandom?) IIRC the ads and the layout itself is not good.

2. Is this the same project that have been around like 3~4 times?

Sad how it's 2023 and people are still using Fandom for wiki works.

Not only these. Oldschool Runescape, Path of Exile and Terraria are even bigger/better examples of communities working together to bring a better, more user-friendly wiki to the game they love, MediaWiki or others.

Uh I also had the same question after reading this topic because I remember seeing something about "Ragnarok Preservation Project" a few times few years ago.
Find me here:

1. I'm going to host it myself eventually, right now I'm just getting the content back to what it was then I'm going to restore the website and MediaWiki.

2. Yep, but it's back now. I'm working on it on a reduced basis now, but I'll be working on it myself and with everyone else I can. I understand the hesitation, cheers for the reply both :)

I wasn't aware of the criticisms of Fandom, sure, I don't like the ads and everything either, I wasn't planning on keeping the content there forever.

OrcLordDaddy

I'm glad this project came back, but I highly suggest to NOT use Fandom.
That site became dog-doodoo over the past few years.

Though, personally I don't know what alternatives to look for.

HalcaRO

There are definitely some issues I've also noticed with fandom, there are lots of invasive ads that make it impossible to see the content sometimes. I've spoken with the people at Miraheze and if they accept our request we'll move our content there, where it's ad-free and easier to view without all of fandom's...stuff in the way.

Zulf

Now, a question. I remember some people talking about the preservation project and how the discord server was killed once (or twice?) before. They stopped caring about it due to this; and this same situation deters me for even checking.

Will this time be different? Was the data archived?

HalcaRO

Yeah, the data was archived. This time it will be different, I have different priorities so I won't be spending as much time on the project, but I wouldn't have restarted it if I didn't wanna continue it. I understood that coming back I'd face that kind of response, but even knowing that I restarted it anyway. If you feel you wouldn't want to come back, I understand and apologise for the past that has led to that.

It'll be different this time mainly because I want to make amends and make this a truly community-led thing so it's not just me. I have a lot of affection for all of the communities in the RO private world and I want to preserve its history because of that affection.

Maybe also make all the materials and data you've gathered available on Archive.org as well, just so it's out there on the internet forever.

For those being skeptic right now I think they're being a bit unfair.

The first time the project went down was when Gravity went on a lawsuit spree. Halca, understandably, took down the project to protect not only himself but his team at the time. Even if it was paranoia and Gravity wouldn't come after a wiki/archive website, this is Gravity we're talking about.

The second time is between Halca and his previous team, but I do not hold him accountable or think he should feel guilty for putting down the project a second time. If he wants to keep up the project now he can. Preservation projects takes a long time, especially when it's operating solo. In regards of finding RO material the information is scattered into a million pieces in multiple languages.

I'd personally give him a second chance. Even though I am not on the team anymore I do wish Halca the best of luck. If he needs help with something he is always welcome to send me a DM here on RMS. If not, that's fine too.

Generally, this has always been the case. Every time we have received Ragnarok Clients we have always mirrored them to archive.org and also archive.is for webpages.  /ok

It really does mean a lot to hear this from you, and you are always welcome back into the project if you want to be, or not if you want. The project should be, and from this point on, will always just be about the preservation and keeping an archive for people so their history can be remembered. Your kindness as always is boundless, and I hope we can work together soon  /lv It shouldn't go without saying that I am sorry for alienating you, and I hold you in the highest regard imaginable /lv

HalcaRO

As an update. The Wiki has been moved to http://www.ragnarok.wiki which also will include more accurate and expanded information on pretty much everything Ragnarok I find -- the idea is to try and be the SEGARetro of Ragnarok and a resource for everyone in this community and elsewhere to contribute to, use, and own. For now, I'm going to continue on expanding the content as I can, hope at some point others will feel happy to contribute information to it as well. /lv
