What's missing most in the thread is the main reason most servers fail.
How do you plan to keep an influx of new players? This is the single most critical question you need to have answered before making/buying your own server.

But as Chemical suggested, join an admin group first. Everyone has ideas. Most ideas are flawed and need a lot ironing out. Relying on your admins to fix your grand ideas will wear out real quick.
