Hai,

me and my team want to build up a new Ro Server. We are aiming for a low rate server (3x - 5x, rates are not sure yet) and kRo like as we dont like unbalanced customs.
But befor we are starting to throw in alot of time and money we would like to know if there is any need of a new server.

Thank you for taking your time to reply and have a nice day ;)

Short: No.

Look around, there are about...like a million of servers?

I, and I don't think I am the only one thinking that, would be appreciated, if not everyone sets up an own server and tries to fill the existing ones first.

Please.

This needs to be pinned somewhere and forced to everyone who wants to make a server.

+1 Internets to you sir.

Dude, go look at some of the "Who's Online" features on the various CPs of LR servers out there. There's not enough people and there's WAY too many servers. Adding another one just thins it out even worse than it already is, and good luck getting players when the market is completely saturated.
To right the countless wrongs of our day, we shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise. What a wonderful world such would be...

Not trying to bump a dead topic but I'm kind of curious as to exactly why people think no new servers should be made at this point? Don't get me wrong, I'm not dense. I get what you're saying when you say that the more servers, the more spread out the people and nine times out of ten a considerably populated server is a fun one -- the more servers, the less servers that're this way, etc etc but...

I can't help but think the opposite. I would actually support people in making a server if they have the team and the resources for it. It's all about enjoyability, this is not a business (at least it's not supposed to be and I realize too many people think it is), it's something you do for the sake of people having fun. Each server tends to be different in it's own ways, each one suiting someone more better than the other. That said, why discourage the creation of a new server? Unless it's a retail-like server then yes, there are enough servers that're this way, but then you have to consider the people who...

1.) Do not like the GM Team/Community on their current retail-like server...
2.) Do not like the donation items on their current retail-like server...
3.) May actually prefer a smaller population...
4.) Want a fresh start on a retail-like server.

I don't know. I've been from server to server myself and I've seen way too many shut down over various reasons or just plain "fail", but I don't really see how this is much of an issue. If someone wants a populated established server they wouldn't join the new server on the block to begin with, so the argument of player saturation doesn't really make much sense. Nothing is stopping people from doing what they could've done if xx server hadn't existed. Then again, I could be thinking too hard on this one and blowing it out of proportion.

tl,dr; If you want to make money off your server, then don't make it. Elsewise, have at you. You never know who wants to play the kind of server you have in mind at the time you have planned for a release until you know.

EDIT: Oh dear, seems I have contradicted myself in the course of a single reply. Oh well. I'll keep it as it is.

Nuh, this topic isn't really dead (still quite recent ;)).
Anyways, I feel that there are too many servers out there for the existing and potential RO players. However, that shouldn't stop people from making servers with their own creative ideas (I hope they are creative) in mind. If you don't have money problems and can host it, go ahead. Even one new player to your server really counts (I know that it's hard to get players as a new server, so every player counts <3 every player contributes greatly to a community). If you have money issues, you may need to reconsider and approach making the server a different way.

If making a server is your long-term goal, try it. Just be sure to take care of it and care for your players along the way regardless of the population. Don't give up if you have a small population (I know I'm not yet) as it'll surely increase soon enough if you try. This is if you have no money issues and don't depend on donations for hosting purposes XD. If you want to earn money off of a server, you better cross that dream off your to-do list as Abversen had said. I just hope your server won't die out if you are making it for fun and for the sake of having a good community/having friends to play on it.

Well, I hope it goes well for you, and have fun with the server if you are making it!

I agree with you in most points, new servers aren't enirely bad, but it depends on who makes them.
Players leave servers because they suck, what do they do? 80% of them create an own server rather than playing the next one. If we keep on like this, we will once have servers for every kind of people, but noone will play them because everyone is admin of his own one.
It's nice to have a choice of servers you can join, surely, but there is no sense in having 100.000 servers, of which 20% are corrupt, 30% are just copies of another one and 20% are bugged and f*** up because of the incompetence of the admins and gms of it.
You can see, which people are in it for money, by viewing the HoS here. There are many more out there, surely, but amongst people posting here you will most likey find none. We are in it for serving the game we love, the game that was destroyed somehow for various reasons, be it Gravity's imcompetence or the fact, that setting up an eAthena now easier than bringing a client for a server to run without errors.
So, in fact, it would have more of a sense to fill up existing servers first before we are trying to bring our own servers up, before we are splitting the community one by one on different servers.

I don't know what are your motivations neither your goals. But let me say something about the most common ones.

The worst kind of servers are "Server 'X' sucks, if I made one it would be so much better!" Running a server is MUCH more than being able to use @item. If your thoughts are that, dont event get started.

Money-maker servers are slightly better. But if you want to make some money, thats a bad idea too. You might get a LOT if your donation shop is filled of OP items, but then your server will suck too and you will never get a great amount of players because most of them already know to look at donation shop before joining the server. If you have fair donation items the server will only have some money left from server costs at about 200-300+ players online and thats a loooooooong way to go. Most servers never peak that. If you want that, sincerely try another game, RO is getting old and there are zillion servers around.

If what you think is not related to that, I'd say give it a shot, but there too many already, and RO is not getting new players anymore, specially at 5x rates.

SpectreZero

Hmm. Makes you wonder just how many servers are created solely out of spite.

Yukino

Not that many XD but there are still some (know a few).
