Why would a server be auctioned "that those who still want to play have the option and maybe get a new owner in the process who has more time to maintain and update the server" when you could just hand it down to another GM or to someone else to run without getting paid in the process.

You gotta love the people who're actually taking up to the auction and bidding such amazing offers as 95 bucks. Their posts also declare them as perfect material for administrators.
I'm not looking for approval from people here who get on their high-horse acting like a know-it-all. I spent 2 long years on this server, if you want to ignore that then fine, but the players haven't forgotten. It's just that due to my job as a Webmaster, I don't even have time, I'm just burning myself out trying to work all day long in front of a computer just to come home and work all night long on a hobby and get little sleep for the next day of work. The point of the auction is to offer it to the players without bias, as in it's not a personal choice to pick out someone to hand it off to, but also pays for the server because the money is going to Scryed first to pay off any cost and then whatever is left over (if anything) goes to me for future projects. The disclaimer at the end of the post about a possible new project was to stop rumors if I wanted to help with a smaller project that Scryed and I and several others might want to try as a team (not as an all-burdon-on-me thing). ScytheRO is not dead, ScytheRO is very much alive, which is why it's so hard for me to manage it since I don't have much time anymore. People who claim I have plenty of free time need to fact check, and people who think I'm just auctioning for money don't know me at all.
My original plan (which I thought was great at first) was to release the source code (user data removed) for free to everyone so that other servers could use us as an example (ask Scryed to prove it), but Scryed needs money to host the server so that plan was given up on after three long discussions. Eventually I came up with the idea of an auction to both continue ScytheRO without me personally running it, and keep Scryed (our server host manager for 2 years) from going into debt over a server he originally let me run for free until ScytheRO started making enough money to pay for itself (which was a huge help). So no, it's not a money grab, it's just to avoid putting Scryed into debt over a server he helped me host. Money first goes to him to pay off the cost of the server and then to me (if any is left over) for any future projects I work on. I do make (somewhat amateur) computer games and computer applications outside of eAthena.
Well, I am going to be honest, I would bid.
However, I myself am in the same pool as Zairik is, I don't have much time to work on a video game as it is.
However, because of recent changes I will have more time than I have had recently.
With that said, I still wouldn't bid on it because I have better things to put my time and money into.
Zairik is doing a wise thing right now, rather than let it die, he is going to let someone continue on the server.
I'd really like to see it end up in good hands though.
If keeping the server up without Zairik having to run it was the issue, wouldn't donations cover that up?

Well, technically speaking, that's what it's doing and has been doing for a while.
I understand the whole giving it to another user thing, but if the users going to be running the server, having an auction for who will take over to pay off the host makes no sense when they should be able to pay for the host. The one thing I don't like is that you said you'd pocket anything left over for you for future projects. Everything paid for the server should go towards the server. Thats how I see it atleast. It's (going to be) your money though, so you can do as you please.

If he makes extra he can use it as a payment for his hard work on the server.

i see a down side and an upside to something like this
on the upside, the person that buys it could really really care and thats why their spending a TON of money for it
on the downside, the person that buys it could just want power and authority, which will pretty much mess things up big time...
Scythe RO is a nice server, too bad sometimes RO just takes too much of you and gives too little. I don't think a auction would be the best way to solve this, you could just have a cheaper host machine and saved some money until you could have paid the debt, but that would be way too much work for someone who got little time in the hands. Like everyone, I was going to suggest to give it administration spot to another person who you would trust instead of just auctioning it, but looking at the other side of the coin now, that seems it would just leave you and Scryed, that worked a lot already, with more problems.
Well, best of luck into finding a actual bidder that know how to work with server stuff and can work with the server when you leave the management, so he can still run the server and not like abuse their power. Just hope he isn't a total douche that will ruin the name of Scythe RO.
Good Luck with any future projects you have, and thanks for posting your side, I was afraid you were like other Private Servers administrators that was just going to self profit.

If most of my post didn't made any sense, it's probably due that I am sleepy at the moment.
So far the best bidder has 95 bucks, which I'm sure can't even pay a month's expenses unless sRO is run on a VPS. Let alone he mentions "his bid is serious, lol.", furthermore proving the theory that sRO will get a new admin with little to no experience on the job. This will inevitably mean the server will die and, most likely, in a pathetic fashion. The whole gist of it is that Zairik won't be around for the fall, plus he will get a buck out of it.
There is still a good chance that he will not know what he is doing and ask help to other servers GM or recruit people that actually know how to run a server, host it for a while till they can donate the same amount of money that cost the server, and maybe in some months, the server will be full of people, even if ran by a newbie on eAthena.
Let's try to keep optimistic.
Some people -myself included- prefer realistic.
Edit: Plus he mentioned that after the auction is done, he will not respond to any kind of question that regards SchyteRO, which leaves your option quite slim in the chance matters.

People will be -leaving- scythe if its going to be a matter of highest bid versus competency level.
Unless you're screening the bids and making sure the people are shown to be competent at least, this is pretty much a stab in the dark plus a bailout.
If it's about competency, then I don't think many with the competence will bid.
I'd offer to administrate the server while Zairik has some time off and when, if he does, decide to return to the server, he would be able to go back to what he was doing.
But, I don't think Zairik would be up for that idea.

Exactly the point.
If Zairik REALLY needed the money and wanted to keep Scythe in competent hands at the same time, then the most efficient way I would think is to scout within his server for people willing to take over the server, display knowledge and after that, only discuss the payment issue.
I would think that with the huge player-base that Scythe already has, there has to be at least a couple of people there dedicated enough towards the server to be willing to go through it.
But seriously, making an auction for it gives the highest possible reward to whoever's getting the money, and an even higher risk depending on who gets their hands on the server.

Most of their people agree sRO is already dead, or will die some days after the auction. Most of the topics have a handful of broken replies, I'll let you guess why is that.

There are over 100 players online and that doesn't include the 19~25 autotraders, NORMALLY.
Only thing that needs to be fixed is WoE, the Cpanel I would rather use Love Rudra or Flux to replace it, the forums I would reskin, I'd make a new patcher, client, installer, eventually new site (I suck at webdesign $$$)
The hall of heroes would be a great addition to the server, but I do not have the original script, and I think it's on the bottom of priorities for server maintenance. WoE being #1.
Then again, that's what I would do for the server.
I just hope the server isn't bought out by some kid who makes his friends GMs for the hell of it.
That'd end the server is .125 seconds.

It did indeed, I know it can attain that again as long as the appropriate changes are made.
The ScytheRO before the wipe was great, if Zairik set the server back to how it was, and the WoE scripts were fixed, it would thrive once more.
The whole, auto event thing is all fine and dandy, but I think it's not good for the server because you need to have GMs

You can buy the server, the hardware, the scripts, the database but no matter what you do you still cant BUY those users. If they dont like how you run things they eventually will leave. Thats the problem with the SHR, your equips and prestige can be made just about overnight.

Just my opinion on this, but wouldn't it be better to auction the server on something like eAthena, where there are more likely to be people who know what they're doing and might be looking to start/expand their server? Some of the people there don't have a server yet, but are planning to make one, and this might be an option they would consider. Some of the people there are server owners who make a lot of money off their server (they probably shouldn't, but they do), and therefore have the experience to run the server, and the funds to keep it running.
I mean, if you get some rich kid like the person who bought the ecchi-ro.net domain, then your server... will become like... that thing...

I know that the auctioneer is Zairik. But, the auction appears to be happening on the ScytheRO forum. And, the majority of players on a normal server tend to be just that: normal players. Only a few players might have experience with administrating a server, editing/updating eAthena, scripting, making patches, bug fixes, etc. Where as, on eAthena, a much larger percentage of the people there are experienced. And those who aren't usually have already started learning.

I don't have control over the server or website anymore, and I probably won't be playing anytime soon. I don't plan on starting a new RO server anytime soon either, but it was an idea I was considering for the future. Probably not a SHR since those are the hardest to balance. eAthena is easy enough to manipulate, but if I do start a new server or help start a new one, I don't want to be left to do all the work since I don't have that much time to devote to it. It was nice for two years. Thanks to all the players who supported us and especially the staff who devoted all their time and effort to helping us make the Best Super High Rate Server Ever.
