Pow

As apart of a GM'ing team on the server I used to play on - we (Well.. I) prepared a newsletter that was meant to emailed to all the users outlining current improvements to the server, upgrades that were coming shortly and event information and etc.

It was going to be available in all the major languages we had on the server (English, Spanish and Portuguese) as to not single anybody out.

All my hard work was for nothing as it fell through because somebody thought that it would be a good idea to 'Put everything on hold for now'.

I personally don't think that that would be considered spam - since I had included a "Do not send me this newsletter" button.
Divided we stand, together we fall.
There isn't any god that can save us all
So don't pray on your knees, just beg on your hands
There is no belief in this promised land

I see nothing wrong with a single email regarding the opening of a new server or requesting someone to join.  Afterall you are the one who made that information available to them.

However, I do see something wrong with emailing members from another RO ( unless the server is going to die or is corrupt )  Either way it's a great method of gaining members.

As far as I know, we've never sent out an e-mail to players on a mass scale for any reason.
I personally think it's quite annoying and makes people feel like you're desperate for attention.
Even for server newsletters, I think it should be something players intentionally sign up for separate from initial account creation.
That way it's not unwanted, and they should feel free to unsubscribe for whatever reason (or no reason whatsoever).
Excluding a situation where the server moves entirely, I don't think any unwanted mass e-mails should be sent out.

So far, I've been given three emails from *******RO about trying to get me to join their server. It was kind of flat, and made it sound a lot like it was computer generated and sent in mass numbers. D= It's not nearly as bad as 50, but that didn't really help my desire to join. If nothing else, it kind of made sure that I was no longer going to even consider them as an option. It's just inappropriate, unnecessary, and, as it has been said, essentially spam.

My definition of spam is frequent unrelenting emails that continuously come in, in an undesired amount which lack actual usefulness.  I do not consider a single email sent to me one time and one time only... "Spam"  I just consider it an advertisement o.o  Which I don't really care about a singular email,  if I do not wish to join.  I can simply delete the email... not really a hassle to me at all ;o

The general consensus in the internet is that spam means "unsolicited advertisement". You say that receiving one email is not so bad. Hmhm, let's extrapolate that, assume you receive a single email asking you to join a private RO server for every private RO server that is currently running. You still consider that not spam? A single email sent to hundreds, or thousands of people who did not ask for it may cost you a few seconds to delete and forget, but in the aggregate, that's thousands upon thousands of seconds wasted. Spam is evil even if just because it generates a huge amount of lost time to mankind.

Yeah, a bit overdramatic, but I hope it gets the point across.

Well, the server I am posting about is InvokeRO, I talked to Kaid and he says it was just 1 email to people from a list he got from AceJay.
In short, I will just post a link to the report on AnthemRO forums.
http://www.anthemro.com/forums/index.php/topic,9870.0.html
I dunno what Kaid has said since then, I forgot my password and I don't feel like wasting any time on that server or that discussion with him.

This is just how people don't like getting emails from other servers, they consider it spam.
The emails are not wanted, they gave no consent to the person emailing them, and they had no affiliation with that server.
Stupid, pointless, annoying messages. To Kaid, the point was to get players, but to the actual people, it was pointless, and annoying.

Even if the result is a ration of 1% out of 100K RO players email i will do it, and i thought about it a lot , proof is that i still did not send them.
Now if you or anyone else consider it spam that remains as an opinion because by definition or law, It is far from being spam

Lookup the CAN SPAM.

PS : I'm not defending myself, i acknowledge the fact that i did send emails to 100 users (testing reliability of my self made SMTP server)
& that i do plan on sending more... so don't boose me off please :(

And yes, what do you think advertising is?
Commercial: Adjective.
4. Sponsored by an advertiser or supported by advertising: you are supporting your server by advertising it in those emails that ARE spam.

Did i sent a porn ad to a 12 year old kid?

Zone

Where does that relate to this?
Spam is not just porn, and I just pulled references to show that.
Seriously, you spammed emails. Just cause it isn't how YOU define it, doesn't mean it isn't spam.
Why did you even bring up porn and 12 year olds?

Because this is Ragnarok Online! a game for 12 year olds with too much time in their hands playing servers ran by sex-deprived basement-crawlers.

(Couldn't resist :B )

basement crawlers like this?
Quote from: NMB on Jan 20, 2008, 05:03 PMHowever... As it turns out, Nas wasn't as well mannered as some believe.  He was harassing young girls for their pictures on the server.  He said he would ban them if he didn't get them.  Not a rumor, I was talking to two of the girls he did it to.

Seriously, porn and age had nothing whatsoever relevance to this subject.
