Title: RO and gender confusion
Post by: BMontgomery on Jul 06, 2007, 03:20 PM
One thing that struck me as odd and I never fully understood is why MALES pose as FEMALES (and maybe the other way around too, I have never heard of it though) in Ragnarok Online. I know of a handfull of individuals that do this and I am certain that there are more that do this that I am not aware of.

Anyone have any idea as to WHY people do this? I am not saying that it is BAD that folks out there pose as a member of the opposite sex, it's just strange.

for money and free equips. :P because most people on the internets never have spoken to a girl before, so they go ga-ga when a "girl" does talk to them. I'm sure there is another reason

From what I've heard in other thread, mostly for the aforementioned reason (equips, attention, help leveling so freebies in the game for being a "girl"). Also because they like looking at a cuter sprite.

Girls who play male have mentionned doing it so they don't get hit on.

I could add 2 more reasons. One are cross-dressers. I can imagine than all males would preffer to be female~

Another one, which I heard from my cousin, is that if he had to stare at someones butt, he would preffer to stare at a girls one. Perves but somehow I can understand them.

I've asked many cross-players this, and they've (for the most part) told me the same thing--female sprites look better.  Some people see their character as a manifestation of themself (hence a role-playing game) others see it as an avatar, a sort of 'pet' that they may feel fondness for or kinship with, but not necessarily want to BE.

And because this forum can be read by small children, I won't comment on how the conversation progressed to what they would do if they really DID have female bodies...

Interesting. Three out of the four people that respond have a FEMALE logo in their display. How many of you are really male? Be honest.

Are you saying that the people that see their character as a manifestation of themself have a feminine side hence the female character?

What does feeling a kinship towards the character have to do with it's gender?

That s being stereotipical, altough i find it DESPICABLE how males go around with FEMALE CHARS
as to emerald's cousin, yeah true,we don t wanna end gay.also to John, your experience dosen t count as ours therefore your statement is invalid.
What is the definition of speaking to a girl?if a guy came to me and told me gimme a knife please i wouldn t say no male or female
and even over the internet you are still talking ,discussing with another person's mind, idea's and beleives.

my experiance on several forums and games.

Yeah, there are plenty of internet junkies out there (I am not an internet junkie BTW) that live in front of their computers, have little contact with people in real life, prefer the internet social life (RO for example) over a real social life etc. etc.

With the internet social life style it is easy to hide and lie and play a role (such as a member of the opposite sex) that could only be wished for in real life. Once the junkie in online, the insecure and awkward person goes away and dream person comes out. The more addicted the junkie becomes to the internet social life the more insecure and awkward the junkie becomes in real life.

The internet social life is a sad and vicious cycle if you ask me. I don't doubt for a second that the majority of the forum and gamer addicts (RO included) out there fit my junkie profile.

PS

No I am not talking about everyone that has ever used a female character.

Nono, I meant in an impersonal way.  They see their character not as an extension of themself, but as something controlled by them.  I'm assuming that many (heterosexual) males wouldn't be against the prospect of making a scantily-clad, generously-proportioned female sprite run baywatch-style around Rune-Midgard, kicking some serious tail at the same time.  Hello, Tomb Raider anyone?  I'm sure some guys can say they'd rather look at a chick with a smoking hot body that defies gravity in more ways than one than well, another dude.  Pure speculation though!

From what I've heard most seem to think the female sprites are better done.. personally I crossdressed as a guy alot when I played on iRO simply cause I got sick of getting hit on, getting cybering propositions etc. simply put I was allowed to paly the game in peace as a guy.

But well this phenomenon is kind of common in online games, and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with 14-15 year olds and hormones....

Post by: superja on Jul 07, 2007, 06:15 PM
I am a female irl but often play as male chars, because I want to play the game. there are a lot of guys out there who are plain awful to a female char. So what if i'm a dancer? that doesn't mean i'm a whore! No, i don't want to marry you!

I am always careful never to mislead a person.... if they ask what my name is, I don't make a male one up. I don't hit on girls, and talk exactly as I would on a female char. It's just nice to be able to play the game with others and not have to worry about getting hit on.

And i totally disagree that the female sprites look better. Only a few I like better:
1.Stalker
2.  priest (but not high priest)
3.  ninja (obviously.... XD)
4. sometimes paladin... i'm iffy on this one
5. SOUL LINKER.... (what's up with the male one anyways??)
6. Knight... and sometimes lk...
but mostly, I like the male characters better.

For the most part, I play male characters now... because I hate being mistaken for a girl. I used to cross-play very often(ie. always)

A friend asked me why once, I told him "If I have to look at an @ss all day, it better be a damn good one." I've seen my friends do it to gain items. I've never accepted bribes, and usually ended up pking whomever did bribe me.

For me, it was more of a, I don't feel like staring at a guy's donkey all day, even if it is only a 2-D donkey. I still acted like a guy though, never role-played into it.

But male creator looks really bad. Ridiculous cape, a beer belly..my creators have always been female for that reason.
And hunters/snipers too. Just..what the hell?
Actually, thinking of that..clowns too. Bard is okay but the trans class? ick.

The correct answer is because we can and we want to. -shrug- And for Bard/Dancer people it's a choice of skills.

I do both genders. Personally I dont see it any different from playing something like Street Fighter where you can choose between a girl character or a male character.

I tend to play female characters for priest class, dancer class and any assassin's I make.  I just like the way their sprite looks over the male sprites (Which is the reason why most people I know who do do it do it).  I know some people do it just to get accepted a little bit in servers instead of feeling left out (like my friend on iRO valk made a female priest and started getting tonnes of friend requests) but most people don't really care about that - it's just a character sprite.

I end up having two accounts. A female for my soullinker, high wiz and sinx who usualy ends up becoming the guild leader just because it's a fem character, then my male account for my more serious characters.

It's mostly based on my past experiences and the way other players treated me. When my female sinx was leader, the other people who we beat kept saying I would sleep with the admin or a gm to get my items when in reality I just took them away from my guildmates. :P They also always assumed that the reason I was leader was because I had cloak, so they never bothered talking to me about alliances. Instead they'd talk to a co-leader, thinking they were the real brains in running a guild. =\

However, if my male sinx was leader, people would think I worked for my gear. They would send in a female character to talk to me about making an alliance, or funny enough, try to seduce me. But RO isnt as bad as WoW when it comes to the mistreatment of female sprites.

Post by: Descent on Dec 29, 2008, 02:45 PM
Depends. I pretty much use a standard gender scheme depending on class and type...

DD Sin X - Female
Crit Sin X - Male
LK - Female
Paladin - Male
High Priest - Female
Sniper - Female
Champion - Male
Stalker - Female
Creator - Male
Professor - Male
Soul Linker - Female

:P Of course, I always will let it be known if I'm on an F character that it's not a girl behind the sprite, which of course, illicits an "ew" or "ur gay NOOOOOOB" from players, but then again...they talk even more when that same female LK is shredding them a new a**hole in PVP. By that point it's "plz stop".

stalker - female
sinx - female but sometimes male
champion - male but sometimes female
hp - male
ws - male
creator - male
paladin - male
lk - male
hw - male
prof - male
clown/gypsy - male but that really is more of a skill choice lol. (i love how clowns look btw)
sl - female

well on my server... i will try to keep people with their own gender. i am currently implementing adult (naked) sprites in an adult section that if people were to be age verified they can get to that will also mean that i will change their chars to their correct gender. because... i dont want deceiption in the adult only maps. there is also members only maps which will have alot of customs. I will probably end off revamping the whole mobdb and mob_skill just to add many more monsters on my server. and utilizing the unused maps.

Males don't look worse than females, in fact i prefer male jobs to female, since it's not hard to match a good hair style with a job to look great. So anyway, i treat every player the same way, cross or not i don't care. In fact i feel irksome and disturbed when any females at all get close to me and ask for tanks. But hey, if they need help, i'll help them a bit, regardless of sex.

I play as a chick, reasons:

First online game i ever played they had fixed genders, like mages were always male priestesses were female and there was no priest. I played as a priestess, and was used to playing as a chick. From there on i have played as a chick on every game, and on RO they look better imo, oh and free equips(Seriously, on MANY servers i usually have a male and female account, the male will get NOTHING not even a tank and female will always be offered items.... quite annoying)

Oh, and i like most female names(Usually ones grabbed from anime <3)

I remember reading about a survey done that showed that 40% of women play as male characters in an online game and over 50% of males play female characters in online games.

Personally I stick with Male because I like to feel the character reflects my personality somewhat when I'm playing a game.  If you need something hot to stare at while playing then party up with women or get a girlfriend to sit in your lap while you play =/

Hey, Ragnarök is a mmorpg, mega multi online ROLE PLAYING GAME.
Meaning you take different roles. So a male, taking the role of a female IS PART OF THE GAME.

Since when was RO a freaky dating game.

Its only when a male in a female sprite cybers with another male thats scary for free iteemz. Call it fraud.

A lot of people simply just prefer a female sprite. For example I had a friend who thought Assassin Cross males were incredibly ugly, so he'd play female sprite for that class as well as High Priest, but for the other classes he'd use male. It just depends on what looks best.

Also because of certain well known Assassin Cross players, it's become a trend to use female sprite on certain servers.

hell yes. most of the male sprites in ro look ugly. so dependin on my class ill play as either a boy or girl (im a boy). like for the manlier classes like lk, stalker or paladin ill play male, but for classes like assassin, priest or whitesmith ill play as a girl. simply because i dislike looking at ugly things all day. seriously, who likes looking at ugly things all day.

i dont even play centaur and a bunch of other heroes in dota, a 40 minute game, because they are ugly. damn i hate ugly looking things in games.

This, but in my opinion, almost all of the females in this game look rather sexed, y'know?

I usually play games as a female, just because they're cuter, but I find male Acolytes and Super Novices to be uber cute. I honestly don't like "slutty" designed characters, even the Succubus and Incubus, although they look soooo much better in the card pictures. Still, the only character I'd ever "cross-dress" as is a Female Super Novice / Novice.

....Of course, @disguise as a Wild Rose, Leaf Cat, or Kobold Archer (Woo, cuteness!) > Everything.

Personally I'll play a female character if I like the sprite more, that's about it. I mean some classes have really crappy sprites for one gender (Female Assassin, pretty much all the male casters but ESPECIALLY Sage, one of my favourite classes...).

There are a lot of creepy people doing it though.

I think it depends more on if the player sees the character as themself on the game, or as something they're controlling.
I see it as something I'm controlling, so as a male, I choose female chars.

This only applys to people who don't hide their real life gender though.

If you think blacksmiths are bad, try looking at the Beach Clothing that Gravity added, when a female character use it, 100% to inflict the status blind and bleeding to anyone who see it. Such a Overpowered effect.
