Many of the later dungeons like Kiel, Moscovia, Geffenia, Biolab and Cursed Abbey require players to finish sometimes quite lengthy quests in order to gain access; but with dungeon warps etc. on private servers, I wonder if players have become too lazy to do these quests anymore, and would thus avoid a server denying them the comfort of direct access to any place/town.

I personally dislike custom warps as players just warp from towns to dungeons and back, never setting foot on the maps inbetween, which takes away from the feeling of Ragnarok being a connected world, rather than fragmented places. Doing the quests with other people takes out some of the annoyance, and can make for an interesting experience/challenge on maps you wouldn't otherwise bother with.

So I'd like to hear your opinions on the matter since I'm in the process of setting up a server and don't want to screw myself by not hearing players opinions on important matters first. Thanks in advance for your input!

xD barely anyone does quests as is, making it so they can just warp in there is so having them never have to do it just seems like such a shame =/

Depends. Some are okay (ayo, biolab, amatsu..), some would require some tuning (like rachel-remove donations), but there are some that are very hard or just screwed up for such server, like kiel or geffenia...
Generally I'm in favor of quests, with warper warping just to enterances/entry NPCs (like odin's temple), but in some quests you will have to seriously change the quest. In case of kiel/geffenia and possibly nameless island (I never did the quest myself, but I checked it and it has crazy prerequisites), an alternate quests with reward being ONLY the access to dungeon (like, in case of geffenia you get only lucifer's lament, no sign or ability to get cursed waters).

Pandora

<3 Quests.

The tedious quest is the price to pay to unlock the dungeon and level there, in the case of nameless for example it's a really good place for exp.

Or for Kiel Dungeon at least the reward for completion is nice, and you get access to one of the best bosses ever for easy leeching exp with a champ.

I've personally done every dungeon quest safe for nameless island, so I'll have to have a look at that one definitely.

Last time I did Kiel was with as a Gypsy coupled with a Sniper and it was troublesome at times, so I wonder if 2nd classes will be fine against event Kiel and Aliot/Alicel. Having to do it for each and every character is really tedious, too.

As for Rachel, I'm thinking about changing the donation necessary to 50m instead.

While the Geffenia quest is damn long, the only hard part I recall is fighting a Dark Illusion, which can be difficult depending on your class. What I like best about this is that only one person from your party/guild has to do it, as Geffenia is opened by a portal. Maybe Kiel's quest can be modified, making only one person having finished the quest necessary in order for the party to access.

I definitely think these quests are worth doing considering what drops in the dungeons.

A priest who knows how to do anything outside of turn undead will properly support the group to beat event-kiel without advanced class. All you really need is Safety Wall after all. Even for when the server just start and I imagine that most people go with an archer class because it is cheap and equipment independent to do decently, you just need to SW Kiel to stop him from using pneuma, and DS away to victory.

Geffenia Quest I am hesistant if I will ever do that quest again, haha... The Sign just really can't match to mantis ring or zerom glove, especially when stats are desperately needed in your no trans environment in order to overcome late game mvps. And, you don't even get an OCA for doing it unlike Kiel =( Completing the quest itself is not a problem, as once again you are allowed to take a party there with you. No one is telling the wizard to solo the Dark Illusion unless he's an idiot or an extremely skillful player.

Having a priest at your side would definitely help tremendously, haha. I'm cautious about making the server too 'hardcore', as that might scare casual and lazy players away, but as of now I'll probably go with having all of the dungeon quests.

Casual players won't be looking for retro-feeling servers, because the general tendency for a new player is more class the better, and your server is the exact reverse. I don't think that new players are your target audiences, so this 'hardcore' factor isn't a problem but in fact, a selling point.

LiteX

I like that idea, most new servers nowadays are just warp warp warp, a good and innovative idea is making custom quests to enter old dungeons (Not overly long or hard, the easier ones could be like talking to an NPC like in culverts), casuals and newbies usually avoid servers that have alot of quests required (Most of them just join HRs), giving not-imbalanced-but-still-not-crap rewards is something that alot of MMORPGs are doing nowadays...

Btw, since you are making and "Old-style server" will Old Payon be there?

The problem with old payon is that it's missing NPC (for example one necessary for the cooking quest) and the entrance to the castle map. If I can sort these out I'd much prefer to have it.

Pandora

I think you confuse npc and map, you can place npc where ever you want on any map you want.

There was 2 versions of old payon, one of them had a gate toward the castle map to the left, the older one didn't.

I did mean moving the NPC onto the old payon maps, but I did forget about 'in construction' payon, which did have the bridge.

I see that players choosing such a server would probably not mind these quests as much as those that like their hand held throughout the game, so that's a relief.
