Ok, I don't see any topics when I search legacy, aside from ones talking about server seeking.

So if there is a thread, move or merge this one to it.  However if there isn't and I'm breaking some kinda taboo or something here, lemme know and I will request the thread deleted or something.

Anyway....

What the heck happened to Legacy RO and why did it close down?  I can't seem to find the right reason on their forums (because it's filled with elitist a******) and the GMs don't seem to want to share much info either.

Can I get a proper response or link to why?

I don't even really play there, I just wanted to know what happened.

I'm curious myself. I know they had like three wipes, but on 10x that's a minor inconvenience...

Kasumi

I don't know, but I know a lot of LegacyRO people joined RetRO.

I was browsing their forums and the Admin/GM person just said "And that's how the cookie crumbles", or something. I want to know too.

LetsHaveJuice

To sum it all up, RO is a relatively old and boring game and Itakou got bored of it.

well he said this:

but then he said this so i was kinda confused:

either way i'm glad i emptied my screen shot folder out the day before that XDD
cause i took like 150 of them that day XD

PS: no one must know my secret char name >.>

lrellok

wow,  pity, it looks like they actually had a decent population to.
The most dangerous thing a GM can do is to play NPC combatants as if they have brains, goals, and the desire to remain alive.

Well that was true, the community was pretty much a race to the title of a biggest f***.

Rudolph Zyaber

yeah see that is the kinda stuff I'm talking about.  He says random crap like that on the forums too and doesn't give a clear and concise answer to why he shut the thing down.  Sure the game is boring and old, but he obviously had a large player base that some other GM could have taken over and supervised financially and administratively, unless the rest of the GM team felt the exact same way and just wanted to let the darn thing die.

Something had to come up for this to have happened.

I guess he has earned enough money with his server (yes I'm serious) and is now concentrating on real life.

Pandora

It's really unprofessional towards his player base u_u

I played on v2 of Legacy and left before the 2nd wipe.  Over the last several months I've somewhat followed the forums there, and it seems that Itakou just got bored of being a GM.  Some players seemed to think it's because there were criticisms of his GMing, and they believe he retired because he was tired of that criticism.  He didn't say anything about that, though.

If I had to guess, I'd say he got tired of Legacy's reputation.  On the other servers I've played on, Legacy had a reputation for being something of a joke after v2.  The donations became controversial, the sheer number of wipes were constantly mocked... one wipe was apparently caused by a security breach using Itakou's own login/pw information to create and distribute items.  On other servers, people who still played on Legacy were considered silly or stupid for staying on a server that was guaranteed to wipe about every 4 months or so.

Itakou also seems to have a detached and grandiose attitude towards everything.  He often claims that he had the biggest private server ever in existence, and that it is an incredible accomplishment (or something to that effect).  Apparently, he believes this makes up for the constant wipes and other problems.

I'm not really sure, but I heard a rumor that he is anonymously starting a lowrate, as the head GM, under a different name.  I'm not sure if the rumor is true, though.

EuphRO set the record didn't they? I think back around 4 years ago EuphRO (old) had a WoE where their 3/3/2 had over 3500 people online.

If you count servers that had sub servers, then obviously the record does not stand. But for a single server, I was almost sure that EuphRO set it higher then Legacy. Especially consider how immensely huge the privateRO community was back then.

Zockerking

The record was set by helmchenRO, which is now euRO.

They had over 5000 players online.

I'm going to call BS.

A google search of "helmchen RO euRO" yields nothing related to a private RO server. There's not way, if what you say is true, that a server with a population of 5000 couldn't be found on google.

Pandora

I think he means it used to be a private server, and was converted into the official euRO server. Not sure if it's true, just saying.

Funnily, euRO is only official server which is still somehow holding on to decency.

You can call it whatever you want.

Exactly.

Wyvern Court

From what it seems, he got tired of being a Game Master. Rather the head-admin...
From personal experience, I can relate to how tough it can be to see people critisize your hard work and dedication to maintaining a server such as that size. The pressure gets pilled on when insolent people flame you.

Now here is what I simply do not get:
Some servers communities have players that talk trashy about the admin, or dont thank them as much as they should for an amazing update.
Then you see some other servers who recieve too much credit then they deserve and get praised for things that really are silly.

Legacy had more of the first kind of community. I think the admin just got sick of it and hit the off button. Somewhat like what Euphorian did with the old EuphRO (oh dang, good times. Very good times) ... only ... I dont quite think that LegacyRO's admin was on drugs when he made the decision to do so...

I remember with my last server, the stress was almost to the point of un-bearable. 400 average players online, when i'd come out with something great and new, players said "Oh hey thanks. But is this it?" more or less, in kinder & darker words. Sometimes i'd barely even have people reply to the updated system information... I think this is how the community acted with LegacyRO, and finally, out of what? 1-2 years the admin got sick of it and just crashed it.
If its true he is making another LR, then you can see how much of a mistake it is to do. To server owners: Dont crash your servers because of this. It's just silly... If you dont find it fun, pass the server onto someone who wants it. Or, change the community around. Make the server a brighter place to be in.

(Side-Note for people who may wonder: I did not take my server down because of the stress. (Server name I will not release) went down due to my stupidity to trusting someone I knew since iRO beta to have server access and he messed things up so bad, it was not worth fixing.)

Pandora

Yeah the pressure can be bad, and sometimes there are lots of ungrateful players, but there's also some nice and grateful ones too that make it worth putting up with the bad ones, anyway a community always comes with both, and an admin should always know what they get into when they start a server, once you open a server to the public you have a responsibility toward your players, it's really sad that their hard work gets trashed because the admin hasn't his heart into it anymore, but then he goes to open another server, so wtf?

Like Wyvern said, he could have passed the powers down to someone else. This makes me think of the thread that someone started about how a good server only needs 1 person, well no, see when you have only 1 person in charge things like this happen, while if you have 2+ the server can rely on the other if one of them quits.

Yeah, it's usually a good idea to have at least a couple close, trusted people around to help shore up the server.  And that way if you need to take a break (or quit) for any reason, you have trustworthy people to keep it going.  I know that's not always possible, but it's usually the better alternative to try to keep the server up and work hard to fix it (or find someone else to work hard to fix it).

Aris

lol. 2.5k - 2.8k was the peak of LRO.

i don't blame itakou tho, i gmed myself there for a really long time. annoying bastards.

MVP Champ

its a shame, twas a really really good lowrate server o_o

Zockerking

A good server with a fail leader. After all they got hacked several times.

respect to legacy on ani gamer X3
but ya it really sucks a ton to be honest =X

Navia

Seemed to me Itakou was tired of all the hacking/cracking and the problems it caused (who wouldn't be?). Lots of work to recover from that... Enjoyed the server while it was up, although all the wipes were frustrating.

Brian

I heard about he creating a new server called GlobeRO.
currently playing at raijero

Anti-Static Foam Cleaner

GlobeRO's site really looks like Itakou's job - simple theme based on one color, and more importantly, the Serious Business writing style.

Hell, maybe I'll join it myself? It's a lot of time left to Warhead...

Guest

globe RO was advertised on their site as a favor to a friend no?
i don't think its  itakou's just his friend's

Aris

lol no, it isn't his, but wouldn't you like to know.

Melona

A new server is in progress, and that is being worked on by Itakou, also known as Ning, I can't give out any additional information as of now, but Ning will surprise you all when the time is right. :)

If he got so tired of his old server why is he starting another one? What guarantee do people have that he wont get bored again and trash their work to start something newer?

it really doesnt make any sense and from the looks of it im not sure if anyone will bother with said server but we'll see..

most of legacy players -knew- that the server would wipe/close again but as long as you have fun that's all that matters. it was a unique server and had a large ENGLISH SPEAKING player base, something rare to find.

everyone was pissed that it closed but the way i see it, as long as you enjoyed your time on the server it was worth it. i met some awesome people

Guest

i guess he'd also be pretty pissed at how everyone made constant snaps about another wipe... i mean it'd be funny after a few times, but it became so constant that it was something you heard like 10 times a day there......

not saying thats the only cause but that'd get really really annoying

Kylee

Many of the players didn't complain, but there were obviously whiners. I think the problem was, it got so focused on the people who complained that the people who enjoyed the server's voice's and opinions fell on deaf ears. imo at least

Guest

squeaky wheel gets the grease, but imo those ppl should have goten bans a long time ago, so  many ppl there should have been banned but never were XD

its a sad though tbh

Aris

lots of them were, but with the wipes, they kept getting unbanned. lol.
