If you pay someone to keep their server up, and they give you a gift for it, and they go and say "man I spent the cash you and the others gave us on a new tv, so that server thing is not gonna happen", you would be pissed.

It's ridiculous to just accept that your money isnt used for what you give it for. You are nice enough to actually give them money, and they go around shitting around with you?

Just super upgrade the server.
It totally needs dual quad cores.

Then, once the server is down/old/retired/closed, I doubt that 8 cores will be obselete too much, and shove them in your normal comp.

Then what to do with the following donations? People just set the donor prices too high and then they use this "spare money" to buy something

There is something to be said when you set a donation system that far-exceeds the requirements of the server.

A donation system that gives an incentive for players to donate; and later you will have much more money than you need for the server, thus... it's okay if you just take it for yourself?

Is it just me, or this whole kind of setup seems made from the get-go to "profit" from it? If it were really about the server, you wouldn't be getting more donations than what is needed for the server (plus a backup for emergencies).

Exactly, if you have a ton of excess donation maybe it's because you're offering too much xD, you can consider lowering it or making it available to non-donator (which usually generates less donation), but that's only for people who aren't interested in the profits. :P

Simply put, any respectable server that offers donation items would/should have a max-amount in storage/accounts at any given time. Once this quota is reached, there is no need to accept donations further. I can safely assure you that 98.37% of servers being started today are for the premise of "making money" at the end of the day, regardless of the s*** that the creators tell you otherwise (i.e., a fun-unique-totally-different-server, etc and all that rubbish). The definition of unique and different has shriveled down to "adjusting the conf settings in eAthena & removing comments in the script conf settings".

And Omi, your arguments are so utterly stupid it makes me wonder if you're just holding on to it for the sake of your e-testicles or if you really are that stupid. I really hope it is the former, because then, I'd know you're just a moron who needs to learn that this is just an internet forum and that there is life outside of it. Give it a try.

But uhh anywhoo! now a days its going to be a given that server owners are just in it for the money and dont care about the server but once and a while a server will pop up that wont but no one will join because you got people like that are so elitest and will think "why bother joining this server with 100 people when you get go to a server just like it and have 500"

but in my 5 years of playing on ro, 2 on IRO and 3 on private servers, I have always had the better experince on the servers that arent in it for the money. They are just so hard to find now adays :/

Yes. They do. A lot.

pRO Valkyrie is 99% bots. inRO Chaos is empty, their connection is awful, and most of the population they do have is again, bots.
and iRO Valk... I admit I was quite excited about it. Well you're missing a lot of the items, so you're basically forced to spend MORE on Kafra points to catch up than just playing on the nearly bot-free premium servers.

The ease of botting on most servers does make RO a gong show though... it turns off new players more than almost anything, particularly when gms summon powerful monsters onto maps to kill them.

If private servers weren't for the most part out to make money off of sketchy 'donates', then a bunch of the NEARLY IDENTICAL servers could just merge together. Bang. Population.

Yeah, I mean, making servers nowadays is just way too easy, just know where to look(too bad most people just start spamming RMS forums) and set it up, people should focus on merging servers, not making more

I like iRO Valkyrie, it has that *fresh server* feeling. Also, no gtb, no deviling, a community that is up over the thousands and the woe is awesome.
They are also taking steps to try and reduce the botting, but since anyone can sign up now for free, it's not really to stop. Luckily you only meet them in the core of prontera nowadays.

Privates now are just.. money makers. The items are half done and not good, their "customs" and "new ideas" are changed items and things that gravity makes, and that eathena copies, making it available for everyone. There's also that part of you that screams "OVERPRICED OVERPOWERED DONATIONS" when you look at a donation page and it has some kind of headgear that gives +10~+50 to all stats and it costs 50$. So far the only balanced server I've seen is.. no one really. The closest you want to come balanced is the officials. Valk being the closest atm because of the items they have taken away, and their kafra shop items that are consumables only.

It's so packed with privates you can roll a dice and choose a random one, and still; find the same kind of server that you were at last time.

I don't know if even official servers can be said to be better now because of the kafra-shop/rental/cash items. You can now simply buy your way through with +10 Stat foods, battle manuals and rented weapons/SG scrolls/whatever.... even Gravity has given in to the "donation" money-grubbing through the cash-items (on the very least they don't need to call them 'donations' at all) :[

They do have F2P servers though, anyway, why the hell do people complain of the kafra shop? I mean, it's not much compared to +10 Stat Wings that you see LRs giving away these days...
