You shouldn't really use a client where you don't know if the packet version is the same, sometimes they work even if different but, from my personal experience, if they're different, you will get errors and most of the time is by trying to connect to the server/log in screen and this happens a lot with newer clients.

You're also forgetting that trying to just use a client to connect and ignoring stuff like the grf or how the client was diff'd of a server also means more errors coming except if they're using something really default and basic.

The error log doesn't help 99.9% of the time since it's hard to read if you're not someone from gravity or someone who studies networks because the errors there are related to memory positions. Sometimes it can be deciphered by using some convert hex to text tool where you can get some partial name of the file but hardly this happens or by converting the launch info using an hex to char tool where you get the id of a skill being used but this isn't something that works all the time.

In your case I smell that there is a packet version problem between server and client or even harmony blocking it from being used. It can be a ton of stuff with the little info given which points me to the following thing:

[offtopic]Btw, you're not trying to use RMS exe as the exe to use for your server, right? If you're trying that stop right there! I advice you to check rathena/eathena wiki and check how is this make at 100% because making this by doing some "hook" from another server ignoring any setting that the client is diff'd with can not work as you want because of the server settings.
Also, if you've any question related to how to diff the exe and etc it can more helpful to ask the pros at rathena/eathena forums for that. This is also the reason why we don't help people with their questions related to "how to make XYZ stuff for my server".[/offtopic]
