Like my MDEF guide, I've made another one that explains about normal DEF and how to stack it, this is how your stat window looks like for defense:
X+Y
Where X is EquipDEF (A.K.A. Hard Def), and Y is VitDEF.
The formula is like this:
[Monster's Attack*(100/100-EquipDEF/100)]-VitDef
Equip Defense comes from equipment, you gain +0.7 HardDEF for each +1 in you gears (+7 DEF in a +10 armor), you can get in the maximum +35 from Headgear, Armor, Shield, Garmet and Shoes.

This guide also explains how to get maximum Defense for each class and branch (Rest does not always include Novice), I will post also some other alternatives, ready?
(Note, items are in their normal, unrefined, uncarded value, I won't include cash shop or event stuff)

1)Top Headgear:
Swordsman/Merchant= Bone Helm/Bone Helm[1]= +7 DEF
Acolyte/Thief/Taekwon= Spiky Band/Spiky Band[1]= +6 DEF
Archer/Mage= Golden Gear/Golden Gear[1]= +5 DEF
*There is also the Corsair that gives +5 DEF and +1 VIT

2)Middle Headgear:
Swordsman= Fin Helm= +2 DEF
Rest= Angel Wing Ears/Evil Wing Ear= +1 DEF
*Additionally, there are many other mid-gears that give +1 DEF, just pointing out the widely used ones

3)Bottom Headgear:
Swordsman= Iron Cain= +1 DEF
*No extra defense for other classes...

4)Armor:
Crusader= Legion Plate Armor/Legion Plate Armor[1]= +11 DEF
Swordsman= Full Plate/Full Plate[1]= +10 DEF
Thief/Merchant= Chain Mail/Chain Mail[1]= +8 DEF
Ninja= Ninja Suit/Ninja Suit[1]= +7 DEF
Rest= Glittering Jacket[1]= +7 DEF
*Lord's clothes are good for merch class, they give +8 DEF,+5 MDEF and +1 INT
*Ninja's suit is also usable by thiefs, they give +7 DEF, +3 MDEF and +1 AGI
*Trans merchs can also use Meteor Plate which gives +10 DEF
*Bryhindir also gives +10 DEF but it is consider to be a god item...

5)Shield:
Swordsman= Shield/Shield[1]= +6 DEF
Ninja= Arm Guard/Arm Guard[1]= +5 DEF
Acolyte/Merchant/Thief/Bard&Dancer= Buckler/ Buckler[1]= +4 DEF
Rest= Guard/Guard[1]= +3 DEF
*Please do not mention Ahura Mazda!
*Advanced Arm Guard gives +4 DEF, but also +5 MDEF
*Crusaders can equip both Sacred Mission and Holy Guard, nice shields with +5 DEF each but with nifty extra effects
*Mages can equip the memory book, same DEF as Guard but with better effects&nice combos
*Cross Shield gives +6 DEF and other good bonuses, it is Crusader only

6)Garmet:
Swordsman/Merchant/Thief= Pauldron[1]= +5 DEF
Taekwon= Manteau[1]= +4 DEF
Rest= Vali's Manteau= +4 DEF
*Vali's is also good for TK as Vali has a -15% from neutral, even though, a raydrik's better
*If you really want a slotted garmet, there is also Undershirt[1], which also has a pretty good combo, plus it's usable by novices
*Aesprika gives +5 DEF and -30% damage from all elements, but it is considered a god item so...

7)Shoes:
Swordsman= Greaves/Greaves[1]= +5 DEF
Rebirth= Valkyrian Shoes[1]= +4 DEF (And other goodies)
Merchant/Thief/Archer/Gunslinger/Taekwon= Boots/Boots[1]= +4 DEF
Rest=Shoes/Shoes[1]= +2 DEF
*Sleipnir gives +5 DEF also, but it is a considered a god item...
*Variant Shoes give an total of +15 DEF and +10% max HP and max SP at Refine 10...but chances of doing this is low as heck.

8)Accessory
All= Safety Ring= +3 DEF (Also gives +3 MDEF!)

Now, adding the total we've gotten for a Crusader
-------------------------
Bone Helm +7 DEF
Fin Helm +2 DEF
Iron Cain +1 DEF
Legion Plate Armor +11 DEF
Shield +6 DEF
Pauldron +5 DEF
Greaves +5 DEF
2* Safety Ring +6 DEF
-------------------------
So in total we have now... 43 Equip Defense, nothing refined and nothing carded for a Paladin/Crusader
Now lets +7 these items
-------------------------
Bone Helm +11.9 DEF
Fin Helm +2 DEF
Iron Cain +1 DEF
Legion Plate Armor +15.9 DEF
Shield +10.9 DEF
Pauldron +9.9 DEF
Greaves +9.9 DEF
2* Safety Ring +6 DEF
-------------------------
This means... about 67.5 Defense...

Now lets add some def-adding cards

Ghoul on Bone Helm +1 DEF
Cornotus on Legion Plate Armor +1 DEF
Tamuran on Shield +2 DEF
Pauldron-No DEF increasing card goes here, but I would choose raydrik for a meat-shield

This adds in total of 71.5 Defense...
Refine them all to +8 and add the cards and it would total to:

Bone Helm +13.6 DEF
Fin Helm +2 DEF
Iron Cain +1 DEF
Legion Plate Armor +17.6 DEF
Shield +13.6 DEF
Pauldron +9.9 DEF
Greaves +9.9 DEF
2* Safety Ring +6 DEF

Totalizing ~74 Defense for a well-equipped Paladin, this Paladin has a total of 180 VITDEF w/ Angelus and he got assump'ed

Now, lets say this Paladin went to Thor 1 and fought a salamander with about 7500~10000 ATK
Adding the normal -74%, his attack would be reduced to 1950~2600, with assump, the damage would be reduced to 925~1300,
Adding the raydrik into the equation, he would reduce it to about 725~850, with his immense VitDEF it would reduce it to
545~670

Now, remove the cards, that makes about 70 DEF, and add an Ice Titan to his shoes and make it's effect happen turning the paladin's hardDEF from 70 to 80, and now, give the pally an alice card.
Now make the calculations, 7500~10000*(100/100-80/100)=1500~2000, add in the assump, making it 750~1000, take the raydrik in effect and the damage is now at 600~800. Add in the alice and watch the damage drop to 360~480, add the 180 VitDef and the damage goes to 180~300.
Now, with defense the damage of 7500~10000 has turned into 180~300, pretty good right? To make it even more broken, let's add rare cards in it!
Same defense and buffs, only we have Deviling and Ghostring!
7500~10000 to 1500~2000 by defense, now to 750~1000 by assump, now to 375~500 by deviling, now to 94~125 by ghostring, now reduced to 57~75 by alice, and reduced to 1~1 due to Vit defense!
 
Now look, using just 2 uber cards and good defense we turned a 7500~10000 damage into a pitiful one, this is how defense works, thanks for reading this guide, also, if you are planning to use this on PvP, beware of Ice Picks and Thanatos Cards!

EDIT: Just tried at the test server, appearently, GR does not work against mobs...

Mobs use a different kind of neutral attack

taken from eAthana's code

whereas 14 = everything except players.

but great guide, I still feel it needs a little bit more of an introduction, instead of throwing a formula at the reader in the first few lines.

Ah, thanks for adding things I missed, but I reccomend Iron Cain+Fin Helm for swordsman branches and I didn't have much time in the shield section as I had to do my homework then quickly return to the guide so i kind of missed some

Impressive. I got it right away, and you could pull this off with RMS's search engine, but it does save me the time. For how long I've been playing the game, it just showed me there's more to know than I thought. I'll be sure to grab a paladin and try it out on the next server I play on.

Erm... hey guys,can teach me how to make a defensive type PVP paladin?
I cant make high DEF because almost sinx use thanatos card..

My item is :
- +10 Angeling Hat
- Angel Wing Ear
- Iron Chain
- +4 Diablos Sets
- +4 Cranial VKshield

3rd Job
MaxBaselvl 150
Joblvl50
MaxStat 120

U can tell me what item should i use and card to reduce damage from player.. not for MVP!

So use only 97 VIT, upgrade only things that really are necesary upgraded (valkyrian's manteau for example) and try to use all kind of demi-human reductions and Neutral reductions.

hmm.. i do that but its still got high damage because cross impact can use 2 weapon so they got 8 slots for card..
before this i make vit 120 and i get damage about 7k-8k.. when i change vit to 80 i only got 4k-5k but my HP also low..
so they only cross impact for 2 times then i go~~  :-\

nice guide... but can you make a section about how ice pick works and thana card, also one about def on HR so that thana card doesn't affect you too much ?
