Basic Sprite Editing for Noobz

This is a step-by-step guide on basic sprite editing. For illustration purpose, I will convert the mid headgear; " Angel Wing Ears" to a pair of "Amazing Wings".


1. Download and install the necessary programs below.

a. GrfBuilder (to extract data)
b. SPR_Conview (to preview sprite images)
c. ROUnicode (convert Korean language to Unicode format)
d. Free RAR Extract Frog (to unpack .rar files)
e. Java SE Runtime Environment (to run .jar files; i.e. ROUnicode)

2. Find the sprite you want. Listed below are some of the popular sources of sprites.

Latest eAthena Headgears


For illustration purpose, I will download Amazing Wings, created by J Perry.  You may want to preview the amazingwings.spr file using SPR_Conview.



3. Using GrfBuilder, Open sdata.grf (C:\Program Files\Ragray\sdata.grf)
 


4. Extract All the data to a temporary folder. (C:\MyTemporary).  
 


5. Run ROUnicode and convert data from Korean language to Cp1252.
 

* If you do not see Korean characters, then you will require some setup to be able to display the characters. For Windows Vista (it should already support Korean language by default). For Windows XP, check this. For other platforms, check this.


Before conversion (i.e. still in Korean language)



After conversion (i.e. in Cp1252/Unicode)



6. Identify the headgear which you want to change the sprite (i.e. Angel Wing Ears). Using RO Sprite Bible, obtain the Unicode file name of Angel Wings Ears.



7. Using SPR_Conview, confirm that ¿©_õ»ç³¯°³±Í.spr is indeed Angel Wings Ears (C:\MyTemporary\data\sprite\¾Ç¼¼»ç¸®\¿©).



8. IMPORTANT
Inside amazingwings.rar, there are two files- SPR and ACT. You will need to duplicate these files (i.e. 4 files in total). After that, Rename those files from amazingwings to the followings:



¿© represents FEMALE
³²  represents MALE
õ»ç³¯°³±Í represents Angel Wing Ears

9. IMPORTANT
Create the following folders:
C:\Program Files\Ragray\data\sprite\¾Ç¼¼»ç¸®\¿©
C:\Program Files\Ragray\data\sprite\¾Ç¼¼»ç¸®\³²



10. Copy the renamed files and paste them in the respective folders.


 



11.  FINITO! Just load RagnarokOnline, and equip an Angel Wing Ears[0] or Angel Wing Ears[1] or Angel Wing Ears[1] with any headgear cards; and it should appear on your screen only as Amazing Wings instead. (Other players will continue to see it as a normal Angel Wing Ears)

You can find soul breaker/soul destroyer effects in data\texture\effect\purpleslash.tga

I have a problem...
When I changed the sprite of the fashion sunglasses to a valkyrie helmet and another custom headgear, the sprite is seen at the bottom part of the character. Not on its head.
I don't know how to fix this.
Can anyone help me?

You need to change the .act file as well, not just the spr.

You don't have to edit it, just get the valk helm .act and replace the fashion sunglasses .act with it.

I already changed the .act file of the fashioned sunglasses but still it appears at the bottom part of the character.

you have to rename the valk .act to the fashion glasses .act and just replace the fashion one.

Yup..
That's the method I used but it seems that it always appear on the bottom of the character.
I tried other head gears too but I got the same results.
