why ragnarok?

Not sure if this was already discussed. But what do you like about ragnarok? What keeps you playing and is unique about RO that no other game can currently offer?

At the moment all I see are negative posts about how RO is dying and etc. Id like to see why RO is still alive to you?

For me personally, I have not found any other game with a Better community. The interactions between players on RO are truly genuine.

Ragnarok is the best game ever lol.

The game is getting old, thus it's normal that it doesn't get as much attention as it used to be. Seeing the current state of private servers in general and of rAthena/Hercules, I don't think it will die any time soon, though.

For me, RO is a great way to find my childhood nostalgia. I've played at an early age and it reminds me a lot of good memories. RO BGM is something that I love above all (Not so far away (Gonryun), Steel Me (Einbroch), Christmas on the 13th month (Niflheim), Theme of Prontera, Title, CheongChee, etc...). It's also a place where I can refine the art-ish side of me. Designin website/forum and sprites is something utterly  pleasant and rewarding. Finally, it's a place where I can feel at home. I might know some towns better than my own birthplace.

RO forever.  /no1

Dying? Not for me, its my first online game and what I like about ragnarok is their unique gameplay system. specially in woe whre teamwork and chemistry is really in need in order to win, also like the MVP Hunt with friends. ahhh i miss those old times

Hmm I think there are a couple of things RO has going for it.
I can understand that it's "dying," but I think it's a good game nonetheless.

I feel like it's dying because:
There are definitely newer games coming out with better graphics and more modern mmorpg styles that people might leave to.
We also have to consider that not as many people will join RO because people hardly advertise for this game in America (It's 12 years old and there are more current games). Also a huge chunk of RO players play on private servers, so it'd be kind of weird to advertise for anything other than official ragnarok servers. I did however see it being advertised in South Korea recently. I don't know how many people play in South Korea though.
And as the generation of people who play this game get older they either just move on from games or from RO, and new people join this game. So it honestly surprises me when I see people who are new to the game.

But I do think it has some stuff going for it.
There are definitely newer games, but that's not always a bad thing for RO because it's one of the only games that has this kind of playstyle.
For instance this game is 3d, but up down left right rather than front back left right.
And it just overall has many differences in mechanics and how stats and skills work compared to newer games.
It also has a very good community, and GvGs, though not as innovative, tend to be more fun since you know who you're fighting.

That being said, I'll probably quit playing this game soon even though I do find it fun!
It's definitely separate from other games that people play.

-RO is my first online game.
-simple graphics (compared to other games that make my head ache)
-it has an anime  /heh
-there are countless guides in the internet (RMS included, other games only have a wiki)
-most people my age knows about it and can relate when i talk about it.

The better question would be... Why not? /gg

It definitely still attract new players though.

Nekoruchii

I always preferred the good old games than the newer ones.
Doesn't have too much requirements or specifications to play one.

Gene

I used to be a WoE fnatic maybe 2-3 years ago when AHK/romed/some other mofo third party programs were not dominantly used yet, but now almost everyone uses it during WoE which made me leave that part of RO for now.

Currently RO still appeals to me because of:

Fun PvM instances/challenges/quests..(really challenging ones)
BG, still ahk/romed fest but I can tolerate it on bg.
The usual short term grinding isn't bad either, though I won't play any rates below x20 anymore.

The gabling on getting a card keeps me hooked. Its like, if i dont play i miss out. A horrible addiction actually.

Just Chemii

Its so funny cause I always leave WoW to come back to RO.

I don't know what it is, really I think its nostalgia for me.  I love RO.  I have made many friends along the way and now that I can map I can make fun creative maps for other players to enjoy.  Plus its an ADORABLE game.

Xarale

For me, it's the community.  I have yet to play any other MMO that has a community quite like our RO community.  On high pop. servers, you can hop around from city to city and find a small community of guilds in each one, just hanging around and socialising.  I don't know any other MMO like this.  Like Chemii above, I tend to play WoW for a little bit, then always end up going back to RO.  Guilds on WoW (especially since the perks feature) just don't compare to the guilds you find on RO.

Also the soundtrack.  As a musical person myself, I love a game with a great soundtrack, and RO definitely fits under that category.

That and nostalgia, RO was my first proper MMO after all.

As others stayed above, It was also my first MMO, and the nostalgia of it seems to always draw me back, even when I think ' this time im done with RO'. The community is probably the best, in terms of the socializing because in most MMO i play, I usually don't know anyone, and it really is not as easy to just sit and chat with someone as it is in RO.

The card system is also something that I have yet to see in any MMO like it is in ragnarok. It just adds a whole new level to the game, and you are not just hunting for the better equips now, but also for the cards that will fit your style. On most MMO i mindlessly just go through all the levels to get the best equip that is at my level, but ragnarok is not like that. Which is what I love about it.

Although because RO has such a big emphasis on socialization , there could also be some negatives, in terms of alot of trashtalking and cussing, which you don't normally see in most MMO. But as you play RO, you get used to it and either learn to ignore it, or join in on the fun.

I apologize in advance for hi-jacking your quote, however you have pretty much summed up my experience regarding Ragnarok Online. :]

Spot on.

eKoh

personally I really like the Party going the intense pvp, killing hard mvps and the crazy woes

also when the community is well going is really fun, it is a better social media than facebook and others =)!

BGM and Sound Effect.

The rest is OK.

leokimah

There really is no other MMO with a fast paced combat system like RO.

Pretty much the only reason I play (came back) is because of WoE.

mogudev

Played many other games, many of them were 3D games but RO is still  more rich in features. Whenever i go to other games what makes me miss is RO's card system. I also liked the simple graphics which allows it to run on my crappy laptop.

dontknowright

RO is brilliant and fun in its simplicity.

Yozakura

The freedom. Unlike most other games which are just sets of do this, then do that, and so on; you're free to do whatever you want in RO, play the game your way, build your class your way. Nearly all classes have the flexibility to be built around your style, whether we're talking renewal or pre-renewal. You can grind, you can quest, you can MVP, you can solo, you can do raids. You can WoE, you can PVP, you can idle around and show off your hat collection, or you can enjoy being a jerk. You can be a VITless Rune Knight or a Battle Priest or a tank Prof, and still have a viable character, given you actually learn how to use it. It's a game, after all. Play it your way.

No other game offers that like RO does, really.

Good game, good following. More smart people and fewer cunts, mostly. Not that that makes me want to play RO right now, though. I mean, I'm nice with cunts even. I'm just a little cunted out right now.

Everyone pretty much said everything I would say so here it is.

The whole WoE thing is totally awesome, I can't find anything close to it.
It is EASY to make fan art and RO vids.
Everyone can relate to it.
Its an open free world.
etc, etc, etc.
I can go on forever. Overall it has that sort of Nintendo/RPG feeling to it.

And the game only dies if the players make it die. Personally, there is no such thing as a dead game only a dead server (Speaking from experience)
ALSO Ragnarok Online is NOT THAT OLD . Old is is Pokemon but people treat it like it is a new game and that is how I.. we should treat RO whenever they update it.

(The following refers mostly to pre-renewal only.)

- Random monster spawn location: You actually have to explore to find more monster instead of just staying next to spawn spot like in all other MMORPGs
- Party-friendly, mostly due to it being grind-driven (can party with anyone +-10 levels) rather than quest-driven (aka "sorry, we can't party, I'm doing a different quest")
- Unlinear progression
- High difficulty, players need to be good at the game for the harder dungeon, it's not as skill based as action MMORPGs, but I'm glad it requires at least some skill

Renewal still has random spawn locations, but it's much less party friendly, has a somewhat linear progression due to Eden Quests and the difficulty is much lower.

ALL of it applies to renewal as well, by the way. Lower difficulty level only applies to the first 99 levels. Getting through 100~135 is a major pain, and it's severely party-oriented at 135+. I agree renewal can be linear due to most people doing the same things, grinding the same areas and going the same routes, but there are plenty of options which most people miss (and don't know), which covers enough for that. Players are both commended and dissed for not going the usual routes, primarily due to it being the harsh solo road (good luck finding a party). Not really quest-oriented, as the Eden quests are just an option, and it is viable to grind instead of doing the quests. Not to mention they're gone post 100, it's back to the grindfest.

I like the community.

Ragnarok is still the best MMO to thousands of people, they get to know the mechanics and know the game inside out meaning they dont really want to learn that all over again in a different game.

Plus the amazing 2D graphics :)

The game is simplified a lot(in some ways)
Stats are easy to understand and make sense, most equips are very straitforward - weapons generally just have attack and a few stats/slots, cards are just strait up stuff like "+3 dex" compared to the stats in WoW(RO both armor and MDEF are 1 = 1% resistance, WoW for example has like 8 different types of block/damage absorb/armor/mitigation)
The cell based floor is also really awesome, "range 6 cells/5x5 aoe" is a lot more straitforward than "fires a long range missile/deals damage in a 1200 AOE"

The main thing for me though is there is no force fed boring as hell storyline, the last 5 or so MMORPG's I've played have all been the same, start the game be handed quest after quest that are totally uninteresting(There is a quest in ArcheAge where play rock paper scissors. EXP reward is worth the same as ~15 mobs in the same area). If you don't like it and want to grind mobs you level 10x slower. There are few quests, but they are rewarding and interesting as hell.

Pretty much everything about RO though, combat/the way monsters work/MvP's I just find is done better than any other game.
:3

Lyuri

I find RO simple and exciting even if its a old game.
