Enough said? i don't claim that its significant but it can be difficult everyone has there own personal struggle that just so happens to be mine.

I also don't remeber placeing blame on anyone in any of my previous posts and that my sole reason for my post was to show OP and anyone else who struggles from any addiction that they can be inspired by OP because  has broken hes.

p.s also to be fair what may not seem significant to you can mean another persons hell not everyone has your mindset and there are plenty of things that can happen throughout your life to make you feel think and act diffrently from other people (Hence the phrase everyone is unique) before you start judgeing me OP or any other game addict Jasc prehaps you should stop and think what lead to the addiction in the first place could be a buttload of things.

Sure you can start saying "Those Kids with cancer" "Starving african children" but please refer to my quote "First World Problems",i really feel sorry for those people that have to have that life struggle and if i had the money to donate to them i would but seriously you shouldn't be compaireing the two because they are in a diffrent league and have nothing to do with OP's original post.

Also i think the whole reason OP started this thread was it was one of hes final steps to letting go of something that has been a massive part of hes life and he was trying to be part some wisdom on people in the same situation as him, and you should be thanking him rather then trying to compaire he's previous issues to other stuff.

FYI i'am very thankfull for the food on my table and the roof over my head and not being dead/dieing of course but i mean comon you really played that card? thats like me telling you to GTFO from your luxurys all toghether because there is people in foreign lands that needs your help better get on a plane ASAP!! cause those people need you.

When you throwout that little bit of food you just can't finsh does that make you a terrible person?(THINK OF DEM AFRICAN CHILDREN)

When you complain that petrol is too expensive(THINK OF DEM PEOPLE THAT CAN'T EVEN BUY FOOD)

When you b*tch about it being too cold(SOME PEOPLE DON't EVEN HAVE BLANKETS)

When you rage because your internet is being jacked up(SOME PPLZ CAN'T AFFORDZ INTERNET)

so obviously your a horrible dramatic person right who needs to stfu and stop complaineing?

^ theres a whole massive list
i guess what i'am trying to say is that i guess we can all sympathize and feel terrible for these people  but we have our own sh!t to deal with.

tl;dr

First world problems? I don't know why you label it like that but I wouldn't call this a first world problem, it would be called a personal problem. If it was a first world problem, majority of us would be affected by it.

Btw, quit blaming video games, its not the pixels fault.  Its people who cannot manage time or self control.  If I see one post saying that its Blizzards fault or Gravity's fault for them being addicted I will blow my top, its your fault you started playing and don't know when to stop.  Thankfully OP realized his life was going down the drain before he ended up being 37 still living with his mother, no job and only playing video games.

I second this, it really is nobody's fault but your own. You can't blame the companies.

@Topic: I really understand your situation, OP. I went through something similar not too long ago, and I have to agree with the rest of the people here; I had no self control. At all. My "addiction" got soooo bad that I decided to have therapy done, once I realized that I was hurting my family and friends-- hell, even people that didn't really get along with me back then, noticed that something was wrong.

But, as I said, it was my fault. Not the game's fault. I still play LoL/RO a few times a week, and I enjoy doing so-- but it's no longer a core part of my life. You can find a "balance" in your life, there's no need to take gaming out of your life if its something you enjoy. As long as you don't neglect your family, friends, and school/work/etc., then there's nothing wrong with videogames!

And so you killed yourself,
but you killed everyone else around you too.

motherflippin

Wow grats, you had a fun party irl.

I also have those while still being able to attend school, work and still play games.

Yukino

I have admitted several times, I personally do not have any self-control. Meh, I read too much manga on my own time anyways (when I should actually be studying -cough-).
It's great to hear about your own story, but I also understand that some of the members thought you were criticizing them indirectly. Basically, it all amounts to you as the main person as many have mentioned here. You decide where you want to take your life, what you want to do during your spare time.

Playing videogames just allows me to explore a different world in some way--the way of communication, the interactive activities, and the amazement of how the world is a global village, which could be both bad and good. And no, I'm not being delusional and saying there's a different reality lol XD. Just saying that there's a different perspective about video games, especially MMORPGs, that really peak my interest.

If playing games is a hobby, don't be afraid of it, but learn to control the amount of time dedicated in doing so. Some people are unable to differentiate between a hobby and a purpose of life, and that's when we get certain addicts. Others realize the difference but cannot manage their time properly. I have a few friends who have great time management, so they can balance their play and work lives well. I hope to do so soon as well ;D.

I find RO extremely productive because i play for my guild and my server; the mvps i farm are to help my guild do big mvps easier and my guild itself its one of the newer ones on an old server. I have made countless friends and talked of many things an learned much of people and myself and I will regret nothing  =)

That's another way of thinking about it.  Rather than thinking back that every minute in RO is a waste, it could be time spent with friends / meeting people / training communication skills / learn to be a team player / enjoying a day off.  As long as it does not affect your real life routine you are fine and feel free to feel RO how you feel like it.

I'll add balance (real vs virtual life) in additional to self-control.

Usagimimi

I wouldn't say RO is productive; rather, it's a good stress relief if you're into casual play, and you can meet interesting people in-game.

Between studying and playing RO, the former would be better classified as a productive activity.

Whenever I play RO or watch TV, all I think about is what I could be doing - working, studying, getting ahead in homework, etc. Same when I'm sitting in class doing nothing. Might as well be doing something that helps you acquire something in real life than sitting around eating nacho chips or watching a movie for the second time in History class.

The RO community in general has always been very intelligent and supportive; reading these replies has only reinforced that opinion.

I very much appreciate the response this post has received and would just like to clarify some things.

The reason why I quit was because I am a high school junior with a 4.66 GPA, a 2200 SAT score, a plethora of extracurriculars to balance along with a healthy social life.

I think it became obvious to me that for myself, I was unable to control my playing time and so I didn't want to give up the promise and potential I saw in myself to the game.

I seriously apologize to anyone who I may have offended or insinuated that the population as a whole is addicted or Gravity is to blame for creating this game... this was meant to be a personal story and message and perhaps I didn't convey that well.

Thanks, everyone :)

Triper

It's nice to see that someone that got an extra life used it well.
Good luck with your life, zhixea.

I will just post my 2 cents about this theme.

Enjoy it while it lasts and know when to stop. It's better to stop later then never and screw an entire life that could be awesome.
Playing a MMO it's like a drug. Once you start, it's hard to stop.
Family - The best MMO game in the world. Nothing can beat the reward that you get by watching your own kid smiling of happiness when looks at you.
Dreams are made of hard work, games are to be enjoyed at free times.

Im not sure how much i should thank you. My story is very similar to yours, i started playing RO in 2005 and ALSO played the same server you did as the first private server i played because i couldnt live playing iRO 2 week trials forever. I was drawin into RO's pvp and woe mechanics, esp woe and its amazing bgm music with somehow pumped andrelanine into me and really got me into the game even tho i woke up 2 am in the freezing cold winter to play woe.I have tried to quit too  somtimes but its just wouldnt work out, RO was addicting in this very strange way and no matter what i couldnt be able to balance it with reality and just left me in absolute disastrous state every mondey when i returned to school.Reading your story was very emotional because no matter what RO was definitly part of me growing up and every year that i look back to, 05-06-07-08-09-10-11, RO was there.

After i read your story i thought the time is now to quit and move on because i realzied many of my ro friends have done this too.
Thank you so much for posting this and hopefully people who want to quit will also find this topic to help them quit.

I find your story is very inspiring..
/sob
Your personal story can help a lot of poor souls to find their way out, be it from ragnarok, other games, porn, etc.

Sure that not everyone is addicted, there are lot of casual players too, BUT.. RO addiction does happens to some ppl, so this thread can serve good for them.. (maybe for me too)

Anyway, I just want to say good luck to you sir, you have made a right decision for your life  /no1

Speak of the devil, I'm back, maybe.
Yeah, everyone has their reasons for being on RO still. Just to add to the list of reasons, mine is for educational purposes. If it weren't for RO, I'm absolutely sure that I wouldn't have found out what I love doing: Web designing, web developing, IA, and project managing.

zhixea

Heck, why don't you consider maybe running your own server?? Make some money off donations... hone those web design and management skills... and like somebody said, once you do that you'll lose all compulsion to play the game LOL

That is the reason why I might be back: to hone those skills and to see what I can do after a year of school. I am considering running a server with a friend, but I'm not entirely sure yet.

By the way, are you still going to keep in touch with this forums or are you going to cut the chains in a week or so?
