Author Topic: Should Hard defense and Soft defense reduced per mob hitting you on classic?  (Read 1939 times)

I'm currently playing on RetRO and it is a classic server but I only just found out that Hard and Soft defense is not reduced the more mobs hit you and for example on oriigins ro it is stated:


Hard Def:

Soft Def:


The owner of RetRO says this is due to OriginsRO using Hercules and has renewal features and he says this was only implemented in renewal.

But I have seen many posts talking about it on the net and I can't really get to an acceptable conclusion and I have never had blind faith on anyone so I am asking here so maybe if I am wrong or correct someone tells me.

I want to know because on RetRO i have seen stuff that I never saw on other servers, like a swordman tanking entire maps receiving only 1 damage and I constantly see knights or crusaders tanking tons of mobs barelly receiving damage and I can not believe that is the intended behavior, maybe I am wrong but to me it seems like mobbing is super buffed on RetRO but I need someone that actually knows if this is normal or not.

This was implemented pretty early in RO, way before trans and renewal.

At what time the system came in I'm unsure on a source, but 100% was before renewal.

Yeah I don't remember this behavior(current RetRO behavior) to be normal, I remember defense have to be lowered.

On pre-renewal, SoftDef (vit) was lowered by 5 (or 5%) for every mob starting from third one.
HardDef (equipment) was not affected by this

Flee was also reduced in similar manner to SoftDef.

HardDef (equipment) was not affected by this

Flee was also reduced in similar manner to SoftDef.

The videos show otherwise and OriginsRO says it reduces both, so OriginsRO is wrong? I highly doubt that besides we have video of it.

Hard DEF was actually also reduced, but iirc eathena had it wrong for many years. its actually coded incorrectly on aegis because gravity are monkeys

you lose -5% DEF for every monster over 2. but... if you use an item like Grimtooth or Tao Gunka Card, you will actually have your DEF increased with over 3 monsters because the penalty switches. Similarly, Crusaders casting GC (and only Crusader types) will have -33% DEF when tanking under 3 monsters, but at the 3rd monsters its just -5% def. They are good at this
It's been this way ever since Comodo, Episode 3 iirc. that and the flee penalty is why agi builds died except for botting

It's a super super early patch (I think comodo) that made def reduced by extra mobs. I'm sure misterj can confirm, but I definitely confirmed it myself too after investigating this week; since I had memory of the patch happening on iro.

It was normal to see swordie classes going afk and taking 1 damage from mobs of 20+ in geffen dungeon - then the patch came and they were sad.

Same patch also buffed flee up to not be reduced until after 3 mobs.

So it was correct until sometime around 2003! After that it was reduced.

The use of status effects (aliment reduction) are relied upon, and that people see as being somewhat encouraged. With flee characters you get to take down high level enemies but not always good because you need to fill out with items that increase dodge( luck) since the flee cap is 95 (but it seems more like 70 when you get to higher dungeon area), vitality builds using something like brandish spear or better, and having a grimtooth to back that defense makes farming incredible more dynamic

Both hard DEF and soft DEF are reduced. I wouldn't be surprised if most emulators still get this wrong.

I really am unaware to the defense issue, you could actually at some point farm the minions from boss monsters but now, you just kill the bosses

I'm going to say thet the owners of this server admited that it was wrong and it was going ti be fixed, so if anyone wonder yeah both hard and soft defense should be reduced, topic can be closed because it has an answer already.
