Actually there are many builds for a professor. Not all professors depend on killing with bolts/magic.

Battle Sage (before Trans came out) was one of my favorite things to play. Grab a good weapon, endow it and turn on energy Coat. Then stab things or whack them with the power of KNOWLEDGE! a.k.a. books.

These days, if a Prof melees, it'll be purely for rapidly dropping LvL 10 Bolts thanks to Auto-Cast/Hindsight combined with Sage Spirit.
