Title: why there's some people who are really desperate to become a GM?

topic and desc says it XD

yes, why there are some people who really looking to be a GM, even copy and paste ing on every GM recruiting topic they can found. doesn't they know it will make them looks un professional?

I mean...what's so good about being a GM? I know, some people understand this job. but, I think, most people don't know that being a GM is hard. really hard. so, why they really want to be a GM?

For power and to make themselves feel like they're better than other players. Those are usually the corrupted ones, the show off ones, the ones who just want to brag "heeey look at me I gm!" It's my opinion of the "Event/Support GMs" who keep copying and pasting their resumes everywhere...and usually bad ones at that. 

Some people can't open their own server due to laziness or not wanting to read all the guides, so the next best thing is being a GM on someone else's server. Others want to help the server, others just got tired of being a player. But who really knows...

I really don't  think there's anything wrong with copying and pasting your resume if you spent a lot of effort typing it up. That's what I did, and probably always will do if I something ever happens to Maelstrom, and I attempt to find a spot on a server. I simply add things if I feel I can offer more than what I'm already offering to begin with to that particular server.

Now, if it's the people you're referring to, where they take the basic Name, Gender, Age, Location, Experience, etc., then I can understand, but like I said, I know, including me, a lot of qualified people who copy and paste resumes they spent awhile typing up and getting ready for the servers they're most interested in. x:

It's a bit more deeper than that.

A feeling of importance and usually appreciate is ensued when become a GM. Becoming someone, whether you're a GM or a really helpful person, both achieve the same importance that all people need and strive for.

Mind you, not everyone will appear appreciative about your work. GMing or becoming a GM is the easier path to gain recognition rather than being a really good PvPer or a forum-whore. Having yourself stand out from the rest is easier said than done and thus there are those who will join any game for the single purpose of popularity or hope to become someone, in whatever aspect.

I think people tend to view things a bit too sadistically or base a reality on personal experience, then again, isn't that what their reality and how they view the world is?

In some cases, people who copy and paste is fine with me.  Those who are desperate on the other hand... They're usually similar to an immature child that begs for a toy.

What's so good as a GM?  The feeling that you can lead people.  So aside that it gives you benefits emotionally, it also increases your self-esteem.  I also suppose that people don't want to become GM for the power, but for the goal in creating a successful server.
Power is good.  So is popularity and the knowledge that you are contributing a lot to the server (and you're useful!).

If your just pasting your resume every time you see a "Hiring GM" topic, yeah your corrupted. If your randomly pasting in other people's Resume just because their resume attracts more attention then yours, your Immature. If you make multiple resume just because your old one is getting bumped down, your desperate.

Some people wish to be accepted by the masses while others wish to become someone they could never be in reality. They want to be the guy holding the knife instead of the other way around for them. Ergo they decide to become a position higher then the players.

On a Very few and rare occasion, there are some people who apply wish to be given a chance to show you their potentials while other servers have rejected them. It is very hard to obtain a position as a Game Master when you first began. Some have to lie about their experience just so they could be given the opportunity to try out as a Game Master.

My reason for wanting to be a GM on another person server has I think already been stated(I don't post my resume on every topic mostly only HR or SHR servers)
1)I cant make my own, next best thing is to be gm on another server.
2)If I can be a support GM I think I would have access to customs so I look cool, without playing
3)I'm a new server hunter, and I get equips fast(if i don't say myself ;D) and when there no one to pvp it gets kinda boring, so instead of being  a player siting in Pronetra talking to people seems like a better option to me
4)I just like helping people.....

maybe people like becoming gms because they want to help people but are unable to set up their own server to do so?  Or they may possibly enjoy being a GM over a player because they'd like to help people in the game rather than play the game.

This is kind of off topic (but on topic), but I really need to get this out.

Why in the world are the same (five, six?) people posting in every single topic they can find, INCLUDING topics of which the OP is no longer looking for people/the server died, or posting their applications when the position they want is not even close to the positions the OP is looking for?

I mean, the idea that these people are copying and pasting the same, poorly done applications, with (what appears to be) no thought put in to at all is sad enough, but necro'ing old posts, and not even being able to qualify for the positions desired (which is against the ToS, I might add)? Seriously.

Honestly, it all boils down to the fact that the resume spammers don't get why they're not being hired, and think that repeatedly posting it will increase their chances.

As an Admin/Owner, I can say with all seriousness that the ones spamming their resumes all over would never be considered for a position on my server, and their posts would be overlooked if we ever used RMS to recruit staff.

The first GM job I had, I never even asked for it. I got it after a lengthy chat with the server owner(of a server I was on for nearly a year straight), and when I asked "Why me?", he replied with "Because you didn't ask to be a GM, you didn't actively seek it, you helped people at a player level, and that alone puts you ahead of the rest of the candidates", and it's the truth. Those who don't seek the position actively are the ones who really are the best suited.

The one who posts his or her resume once are the ones that should deserve the best consideration, for they have the patience to wait for a reply, which in turn, shows they will be patient in other aspects if hired.

+1. I completely agree, unfortunately, however, I've noticed some of the recent staff seekers have actually been considering the spammers. To each their own, I guess.

People always desire power, fame, wealth, and so forth. Becoming a Game Master is just one of the ways said people believe that they will acquire such things, not that they ever do though, usually they manage to acquire the opposite and as such we see a topic about them in the Hall of Shame.

People who want to be a GM are the ones that really shouldn't be hired, in my opinion.

Just look at the gems of resumes from users like Flang, Cayatenoaldaba, dandrew...

It should be common knowledge that posting your resume more than once in Recruitment(not counting the slew of replies after the fact in other topics) == your chances of hiring are now nil.

Cause making events make GM's feel they're manipulating the community w/ their rules and all ("Dance, puppets! Dance!"). As for player support, in a newbie's point of view, an advice from a GM is waaaaaaaay better than an advice from a normal player even though the player's advice is more accurate. That being said, it just makes the GM feel more in power as newbies would be inclined to GM's than regular players and are very oblivious to their intentions.

I wonder why a server would hire someone as useless as that.
Better yet, they feel special and they are desperate to become a GM because they're children.  Heck, they can flush a toilet and feel godly.  Believe it or not, the Internet is filled with spamming kids who seek power and attention.

I think, they have the image of becoming a GM as a all powerful person that will boost there popularity and not take into consideration the work that also comes with the part.

Or they want to become GMs so they can try to sabotage a server.

The problem isn't that everyone "Knows" how to do it,  the problem is,  people don't do it right.  It takes a very good GM to do support and events the correct way.

The problem isn't that everyone "Knows" how to do it,  the problem is,  people don't do it right.  It takes a very good GM to do support and events the correct way.
There we go, there's some real truth there.
I have set up everything for people to open servers with minimal modifications.
However, I don't support them. I just got tired of people asking me for help.
And soon, I will be removing all of my RO files from my site except for a few for a user on a server who needs downloads to be able to play...(bandwidth exceeded issues)
Anyways, back to the subject, we all know it doesn't take anything special to make a server.
It takes something special to make a special server.
As for staff, the people wanna be gms cause they think it's all fun and games.
Get extra powers and play with them.
That isn't how shi- works.

IMO, some of those people posting on the recruitment thread are the ones that shouldnt be recruited, i mean, some people will finally recruit them but then the poster will turn out to be a corrupt one, then he goes back to his "I wanna GM a server" habits, even though filipinos have a very bad reputation on pretty much every non-filipino RO server, the mass spamming of certain time zone with a certain language might end up being one person with many pseudonyms, and even though, corruption can come from any corner of the world

This is a 2009 topic but I guess it's worth a revisit.  In my view, talented people don't have to be desperate, they just get recruited without even asking.  So those that are desperate to be GM are the bunch that are better off to stay as a player.  A good GM know how to be a GM and know it takes a lot of time and effort.  So who wants to be a GM?  You can expect the opposite 75% of the time => those that don't know how to be a good GM  /heh

I think that sometimes (this wouldn't really apply to the people spamming resumes to multiple servers) if someone plays on a particular server and for whatever reason is not happy with how fast, or the content of updates, or whatever it is they find fault with they start getting it in their mind that oh I could do a much better job! Make me a GM! So they start bugging the current GMs about it -_- 99% of the time I doubt they have even the remotest idea of how much work it really is...

Well yeah. For me, players who just want to be a GM only wants to show off rather just to become popular and start boasting on their friends that they're a GM on a RO (But the truth is they're just event/helper GM's so nothing's really special about it). And also maybe to become a " High Profile ".

They likely think that being a GM will mean everyone loves them and is nice to them all the time. They seem to think the position means automatic respect, but somehow missed out that it also means a whole lot of works.
On top of this they have no idea that, in fact, "love and respect" are two of the hardest things to get as a GM, you're more likely to get lots of hate every time you punish a player, or, play a part in a choice that was for the good of the server but perhaps not what a good deal of people desire.

I think those who flood that section with applications do so with, probably, innocent intentions. They just want to be popular and loved and maybe be able to show off. They are simply failing to realise that things don't work the way they hoped, and sadly, if they do get hired, they're in for a very rude awakening.

I've seen players try to become a GM for a lot of reasons. You just need to make sure you start them off on a GM account that can't cause a lot trouble and have a system to where you can monitor them. Usually people with good intentions that want to be GMs and use that power to interact with the player base in some way, usually want to be Event GMs. The players that enjoy the server and care for it's progression typically want to become Support/Enforcement GMs. From what I've seen most of the higher-up's on a server's staff are looking for a proving grounds for themselves.
As such, there's usually a separation of intimacy there, especially with pseudo-anonymous recruitment here on RMS.

I might sound racist here, but I agree on the Pinoy part. Most of the applicants are Filipinos and it's not an opinion anymore that they're rule breakers or criminals in online gaming world. If you want a bit of safety, I suggest server admins not to pick them easily, unless you knew the person for quite a long time. It's not hard to distinguish the decent and bad ones, for Pinoys.

Let's drop it at that.

But yes, basically the general idea of people wanting to become a GM might be :

1. Power abuse : typical misconception where you think when you become GM, you are the king, you can @item your legit character and stomp on anyone that opposes you. man, people don't hire you to destroy their own server. if they can't see this, they should be rejected and banned from your server because these people are potential threats.

2. Rather into social than playing : the group that chooses to having fun around and wants more friends. being GM is without question, the easiest way to pull off attention. but then, remember that you need to have some special talent to get the spot. if wanting more friends can net you a GM position, everyone deserves the position then. oh and don't forget, while they might be social, they also can become the drama queens.

3. Because I work for it! : maybe he's already working behind the scene but doesn't have ingame presence? here they are, might be the techies, big boss, or whatever. they're mostly safe picks because, well, I don't know. you worked hard for it, why would you ruin it?

4. Creative : these people want to share their fun with players, mostly artists, or people good at managing events. it's all cool if you want more new stuffs for your server. the downfall might be, their creativity only lasted for some time, then they might change into other types of people. and again, watch out, we all know how plagiarism has spread over the Internet.

I've had a lot of players say "Oh I would love to be a GM you get everyone to talk to you blah blah" not taking into account most of the time people talk to you it is to complain about something or demand something.  My favorite is always "Well why does blah blah take you guys so long, it isn't really THAT hard."

On top of all this you are at risk of LOSING friends, if you're doing the job right, because even if they're your friend, if they break a rule you will need to punish them. And sometimes people assume that "Oh, no my friend is a GM, I can get away with things" so when they end up banned they blame you for allowing it to happen...

That too! (which is why I try crazy hard to make sure my friends don't know who I am even if I am not directly involved in punishments) Or even if it isn't necessarily a friend, but someone you had a nice conversation with....then they go break a rule and go all psycho on you cause you "let them get punished even though you acted all nice the day before so you must really not be a nice person and secretly want everyone banned" I really had someone say that to me. They had asked a couple questions the day before then did something silly that got them muted. Next time they saw me in game they jumped on me right away completely offended that they could get muted after being nice to a GM right before they broke a rule. I wasn't even the one that was on when they broke a rule and got muted....They went on about oh if they were a GM they would be more lenient about it and so more people would come to the server since it would be more fun! Yeah...cause it totally works that way.
