Over time I've questioned the acronym of "GM" and I am wanting to change its meaning all together.
I feel that "Game Master" is an inaccurate acronym for the actual position in question. The term "Game Master" sounds more like someone who has mastered the game and knows more about it than anyone else. Which we all know is not the case for pretty much every GM. We can't know it all ;3 Also in terms of authority the word 'master' sounds more like a slavery term in my opinion. All the terms for master just do not seem to accurately describe what an actual GM is. Giving the ability to enforce rules, converse with the community.. I feel a better term is needed.
Personally in order to avoid changing the two letters...
I believe 'Game Monitor' is the most accurate acronym for a GM o.O
I believe Guild Member is the best.

Guild member? o_o t I only use GM for referring to a Guild Master of Game Master. I rarely use it for referring to a guildie.
And I personally like the acronym Game Monitor myself for a position of power(?). Unless you're the server owner or something then Game Master. :/
imo GM doesn't stand for any words at all to me....
GM to me stands for a person that is there to help ppl, enforce the rules, and make the game more enjoyable
so GM doesn't mean game master or game mod to me, cause to me its just a term used to describe someone's job in the server
General Moderator?...perhaps?..No? ok..
Game Manipulator?? /heh sounds like a hacker to me /ok

Maybe the corrupt ones lol. XD
/ok
literally it's game master (which is widely used in all online gaming) but it's more of a game moderator... so game mod is just as appropriate ;)
God Mode /gg everything dances like a banana in his palms :-X
Depends on the context.
Game Monster?

"Game Master" comes from the original tabletop RPGs.
Since the TT Game Master role is to 1) Know the game rules(In RO it would be server rules not game rules since game rules are already being enforced by the game itself) 2) Enforce these rules and 3) Have a final word in any disagreement, I think the term is pretty appropiate.

GM's job is not being your friend, it's punishing people who break the rules.
Game Moderator is what I think of it.
Game Manager sounds alright too, I suppose.
Personally, I think we should change it altogether to GA (Game Administrator) or something. GM has too many different RO meanings such as Guild Master and Guild Member.

lol i second that notion~!
At the same time, "GM" is drilled so far into my head that I'd still be using it all of the time. Not to mention, we'd all have to change our names, as most GMs on a server have a GM Title. "GM _____"
So maybe it's just best to stick with what we've already got? I don't think many want to change it, anyway.
I can just imagine announcing to me server "Hey, everyone, from now on we are GAs, not GMs!" I'd probably end up having to go before The Inquisition or something... Just kidding. xD
For convenience sake it's easier to keep GM.
i guess but GM really does sound kinda lame Dx

xDDDD lol actually i can picture that too =o
Yep. Agreed. ;D
lol i think it "Game Member" :P

I believe the term suits me finely, in terms of overall game/server knowledge, i might not know everything about RO, or at least spit out an answer to all questions out of nowhere, but i sure have messed with the game more than 99.9% of RO players you have seen around.
the abbr. GM has no more meaning. it just refers to people who are higher than normal player(well it DOES have a meaning)
just like WTF which refers to holy cow or what!!!. cus no one types the real meaning
WTF can also refer to F*** or holy s***! (can also refer to !!!!!!)
just like GM.
So wait. GM means f***?
I got lost in your argument
i think he means that it has so many meanings to it that it doesn't really matter......... XD
EDIT: weeeeee typos

Spoiler
i was on crack
GMs are far different from staff. People always mix the both of them. GMs are the so called general managers, like Yc said. However, the event boys, recruiters, clowns&entertainment people, aren't supposed to be called "GM". and from the 1st place, GM means "Game Master". I just lol if someone says I became a GM here blah2x but never really know about the game, only wearing those fancy clothes and do some events. GMs aren't suppose to be clowns or entertainers from the 1st place too.
GM = Gigolo Master?
But I'm sure it was called Game Moderator :-\
GM origin was from table RPGs, and it meant GAME MASTER.
Enough said.

Yes, and not fancy event clowns out there who feels like they know everything about the server.
Great Man!
Google Me :D
Haha.. I don't see whats wrong with Game Master, never even bothered to know what it really meant >_>"
But a GM to me is like... A big person who is willing to help, nothing that gives me an OMG moment :)
Grand Masochist
because GM's sacrifice their playtime for the Server's betterment. Well...at least that should be the reason...
Which is why I will never GM.
googeley matress >.<
Yeah Grand Masochist lol XD
lol ya got a good laugh outa that one x3
Game Moderator is actually what I thought it stood for when I first started playing. A GM to me is a player that goes out of their way to make sure a server's needs are being met; ie support, bugs, making new npcs, etc. A GM should be someone who can dedicate some of their life to helping other people have a good gaming experience.
"Grind more."
i would personally think that the term GM is "Global Moderator" as it is in the forum. it would be the same, more or less
"GM" = Gee em.
I think that's the prefix for "GM".
Grand Ma....
Godly Manipulator...
;D
no...?
really.
as far as i know.
GM - game master - person who is in charge for the life of a server, maintaining the server. they must also know how to play, have experience in the game so they understand what to do if there are players giving any complaint or suggestion about the server.
uhmm .. maybe .. GM for me is ..
1. They always make fun of me ..
that's why i agree to the person who said GM means Game Manipulator .. ahaha .. lolx
Hi, GM for me is ....
Get Money :P
Like, you get alot of donation right? :P
Well, actually, I didnt take my GMing very serious before, but lately it kinda changed for me.
So I guess, GM is very important role in the game and well, you have to be "fair" to all =)

are you telling about yourself? :P
for me...GM is...someone who can help us with the game xD
I would have liked it to mean Game Mediator, as in a mediator between the admin and the players.
noun
a negotiator who acts as a link between parties
one that works to effect reconciliation, settlement, or compromise
between parties at variance
one who intervenes between two persons who are at variance, with a view to reconcile them.
But now I simply refer to my GM's as "staff".
GM means Game Monster :O or does it >.>....why's it GM...why not GE or....GP???
What's GE or GP suppose to mean?
GM. Game Master, from its original origins as "Dungeon Master". In the end? The one who has the final say in -any- situation is the ruler of the gaming world, the Game Master. Of course, that comes with it responsibilities - abusing that power, just like for a DM in a D&D game, leads to unhappy players and a termination of the game. But they're still the people who decides what can happen and what simply cannot be allowed to occur; who gets to play and who doesn't; what is implemented in the world and what isn't. You are the master of the game, and have all the powers connected to that title; as well as the responsibility.
With that said, the server I "GM" at uses the term ST instead. It stands for "Storyteller". As the server is heavily (massively) Roleplaying focused... the primary role of the GM is supposed to be to tell the story of the world to the player through NPC encounters, writing, and events. We still fulfill all the roles of a GM [especially in the sense I outlined above]; but we chose the name change to be something more unique to our server and the focus on Roleplaying as opposed to being just another MMORPG.
Get Married.

That sounds more like the Admin rather than the GM's.
xD but admin seems to have a more clear and distinct meaning behind its name
GM seems to be more... confused at times
To me GM means...
oh god, time to work and listen to complaints =p
Or
Game Independent Technical reassuring lean reversed phalanx Master
;D ;)"GM"?? what does it mean to me??
well all i can say, if we said GM, first come into my mind is the "Game-Master"
ofcourse, the GM provide all knowledge that we want when playing all kind of games specially,, they make lot of things possible in this game, more excitement when they start making an event,
and the most infortant things, The GM shows you how become a more competitive than other,
for me as a player, i can say that im just a weak, :-[ but! because of the GM, im always fight just to reach the maximum of the other, my game-dream is to become a powerful, a great player,,but that is the biggest challenge that the GM telling me to become without making any conversation with me, but through their events,, like WOE, etc.
That's the GM stands for me a player 8) ::) ;D
gudluck ;) ;D :D
Probably, Game Mentors. xD
Gm
controlling the game ?
As a GM, it kinda feels like a job but I also want the server I'm working for to be known and grow, so it's worth it.
GRAND MOTHER ///??
Global mother ? ;D
Google Master
When you use GM in most servers it can refer to many different things but the first to pop up is "Game Master"
It can mean:
Game Master
Guild Master
Guild Member
Guy/Girl Masterbating
All are acceptional versions
to me it either means Global Moderator, Guild Master(or GL for Guild Leader), or Game Master.
Game Manager?
Two Words.
Good Man. :P Lmfao.
Game Master ov'course.
I agree with the one above that said it may be something like a Game Moderator :) someone who makes sure the balance of rules and regulations is maintained but at the same time provides a balance between events and other things for players :)
Gamemaster.
I feel the wiki page holds my view pretty well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamemaster
yes, everyone knows that it means Game Master, but what he was asking was, does being a game master necessarily mean mastering the game? :) he was just taking things literally :)

I understand that. I also stated that my own opinion of what it 'means to me' conforms with the Wikipedia definition.
how about game balancer?
Currently it means:
Grabbing Money
gigantic e-peen
Gain Money.
No, but really, it's a Game Master.
game mode :D
too many thinking ady ahahaha
let all just remain in 1=the old style(BOSS!!!)
hahaha
i firstly play ro alway call gm as BOSS lol ^^'''
i mean all the player in the server just call GM as BOSS!
hahhaa ^^
Green Moob?
Guilty Murderers!
Usualy kills the spirit of playing RO! hehehe....
yes... thats a pretty retarted joke.. sorry..
I was subbed as a Game Manipulator in a certain RO server, because I was a developer. As the previous post(s) said, it looks like a hacker o.o
"Game Master" or "Game Moderator". This is the person who is in charge of running or ruining the game, including having final say over how actions are resolved.
ummm it means person who has more commands than anyone else?
GM = GOod Manners :)
GM=means Game Master..
helping ppl in the game ^_^ like asking questions?
:D
Helping is not always GM's job. Every player can do that, it depends on each person.
A GM should be a good example for his/her player, like a cartoon superhero that is idolized by kids.
GAME MASTER = GOOD MAN or GAME MONSTER or GAME MANIPULATOR lol
there are many meaning we can describe "GM" nowadays ~ /ho

RockerZin
