I am currently working on putting together a team and I'm curious to see how some owners/co-owners initiate new staff members to their teams.

1) What would you qualify as a "successful" interview? Are you looking for experience or genuinity and character?

2) what does your "Trial" process look like?
-what powers do you allow your new Trial GMs
-what requirements do you allocate to them
-how do you monitor their actions
-how/when do you determine their trial period is over

Just looking for some insight ^^, anything helps, thanks.

You'll need 2-3 GM's/Admins who are experienced and know what they are doing . As for the Trial GM's you could give newbies a chance.

-what does your "Trial" process look like?
Usually lasts for about a month . You'll have to monitor them real close.

-what powers do you allow your new Trial GMs
Anything basic and necessary (for example: @warp , @jump , @hide , @speed etc) . Nothing important which can be abused .

-what requirements do you allocate to them
I got no clue . Maybe a servers Admin or an experienced GM would be able to answer that properly.

how do you monitor their actions
View chat logs to see how they're interacting with players , Check their activity in-game and on the forums .

how/when do you determine their trial period is over
I guess when you start to trust him and he shows results you can make him a permanent GM.

An Admin or an experienced GM can answer that better .

What Doomed sayed.  /no1

That is up to you. No one can answer that beside you and your current staff. It goes accordingly with what you need at the moment. If you need someone to make events, you might want creativity. If you need a police, you would ask for more seriousness or technical knowledge if you seek a support.

I am personally pretty laid back about interviews, as long as person in question doesn't seem uninterested or treats you with disrespect, you should give him/her a chance. I am mentioning disrespect because if a individual who is under consideration to become a member of your staff has difficulties respecting his/her superior, he/she will likely also have trouble dealing with/respecting players. I also tend to judge them by their English, simply because it seems terrible when a GM types "juz liek dis".

You have been through it yourself with me. /heh
It has been said before; the commands you give out should not be abusive. Yes, they might not like it, and yes, they will be eager to pass the trial phase as fast as possible and/or rush you about it, but a very important quality for a GM is to be patient. Someone who is truly interested in the job will show you patience (and that's the potential GM you're looking for, although they are quite difficult to find!)

As for their actions, you can monitor them through SQL. There are picklogs, tradelogs, everything they do is tracable. Some administrators go as far as injecting scripts to monitor their GMs actions, like when the GM uses command x or y, it will be displayed as a server-wide broadcast (i.e "GM Laeta has given out Yggdrasil Berry to player Zero!". IMO, that is a little bit over the top and shows players that even among the team there are trust issues, that is something you will want to avoid. ;)

@Najara
Thank you for everything  /no1.....I still want you and Crayon >.<. Good luck on your future ventures, it was truly awesome working with you.

@fanoe
thanks for your input ^^. I agree the degree and type of requirements fluctuates depending on the needs of the server and position.

Hi Royal~

I never experienced undergoing a trial period but I experienced handling those who are in the trial period.

The interview should be about knowing the one you are hiring. If you are going to accept someone with experience, ask what his is position and his experience. (The ups and downs) and what do you think he had learned from it and for those who doesn't have one yet, ask what does he expect in the position is he going to apply, how prepared is he, what does he expect from the server, players and the staff that he'll be working with and how much dedication can he give (idk who I told this at Warfare, when you become a staff, other activities like RMS responding in server seeking threads is a part of the dedication). Then, if you are not satisfied, you are open to ask another questions and in the latter part, explain to him why does he need to undergo a trial position and so on and so fort.

Trial process should be a month, its the most preferred though, two months would be nuts. As for how you can determine when its over, aside from after a month, I suggest you put a section in your forums naming (or at least similar to this) as Staff Feedback then, ask players to post there. As for their logs, you can simply check it out on your own (SQL, etc)

I suggest you make a pinned topic with a format like this: (Remember, this is applicable to all staff, including the admin himself)

Topic Name: <GM name>

Content:

Rating (1 out of 10)
Helpfulness:
Activeness:
Eventfulness: (For event GM only)
Comment: (Please state the positive and the negative aspect of the staff for them to improve the negative aspects.)

Do you think he should be a full time GM here, and why? (For those who are in trial positions)

Hope it helps~
