Hello I was wondering if anyone can explain this to me.
I recently made a swordsman and it is currently lvl 16 in both job and base. The novice falchion that I received upon becoming a swordsman is the weapon I've been using all this time: with a weapon strength of 39.
After getting 2h sword mastery to level 5, I decided to switch to a katana (weapon strength 60) thinking that the mastery and the extra attack strength would help to boost my damage.
What confuses me is that despite the mastery, the damage I do to monsters remains completely the same; using the falchion and while using the katana. Is this some sort of glitch?
This is really annoying for me as I've just started and buying that katana took alot of effort. Now I find that not only was it useless, I was better off with the falchion since it gave me higher attack speed while maintaining the same attack..
Help T.T

First I am seeing novice falchion giving attack: 59.

When you have level five 2h sword mastery you must have level one 1h sword mastery.

So the damage you are looking for should be the 4 level of 2h sword mastery.  I can't explain further.  There should be a +16~ difference? Of course you won't see it that exact in game.  Maybe too little for you to notice.

I'm betting on this and should be the problem you're getting and also your answer:

First, all is working fine and you've probably like lv 6 or more of the 1h sword mastery to make that happen.
Taking into consideration that part and that the mastery dmg is something fixed and extra to your final dmg, the extra dmg from 1h > 2h[from masteries ofc] and all because of the following:
>>1h swords give 100% dmg on medium size monster instead of 75% from 2h swords and you're fighting a medium monster.

Making some random calcs, with +0 falchion[4] and a +0 katana[4] on a medium size monster, it's possible to falchion give the same dmg as a katana if you've something as lv 6 1h sword mastery.

Here is a better explanation[i just hope i'm not wrong in what I tell next =p]:

According to your data:
falchion = 39 atk
katana = 60 atk
On a medium size monster with 0 def and 1 vit, falchion is 100% then is 40 dmg then final dmg is 39[-1 dmg from the vit] without masteries.
On a medium size monster with 0 def and 1 vit, katana is 75% since it suffers from size penalties and so it becomes 45.75 and from the -1 vit it becomes 44.75 ~ 44[it's the way the game works] as final dmg without masteries.
Since the extra 5 from katana is like nothing and you've lv 5 of 2h sword mastery you end with 65 final dmg on the medium size monster.
If you get lv6 of 1h sword mastery you get +24 atk and adding that to 39 becomes 63 which is really close to 64.
If we make something more practical aka your char having some str and dex we can get the same results.

tl;dr:
falchion 39 atk
katana 60
your char has 1 atk at lv 1 so it's +1 to add to the atk of the weapon for your final atk
size penalty at medium size at katana by 25%
1h mastery dmg bonus = 4x lv of it
2h mastery dmg bonus = 4 x lv of it
0 def/1 vit monster/medium size - falchion: [[40*1]-1]+[4*x] = 39+[4*x] where x is the lv of 1h mastery you've
0 def/1 vit monster/medium size - katana: [[61*0.75]-1]+[4*x] = 44+[4*x] where x is the lv of 2h mastery you've
44 -39 = 5
Each mastery = +4final dmg
2 more lvs of 1h mastery then 2h means more dmg with 1hand swords

The only problem is that my 1h sword mastery is at level 1 while 2h sword mastery is at 5...

Regardless, thanks for your help guys. I guess I'll just keep going and max out 2h sword mastery. Hopefully by then the damage difference will become apparent :)

It really is 39; at least that's what it says in game... What do you think? Possible typo?

Easy to check, unequip and equip both weapons and check the increase of atk with each one with status menu open.

Chemical Crush

You sure its a NOVICE Falchion?  The NOVICE falchion is 59 while the NORMAL Falchion is 39.  Just pointin that out.

Oh yea i was gonna ask what monster was he hitting for reason I couldn't think of because too sleepy.

Like Tripper explained, the table of weapon type vs monster size might just add to the missing pieces: http://ratemyserver.net/index.php?page=misc_table_size
