New Registration Verification
« on: Jun 22, 2010, 09:04 pm »
...now ain't that a mouthfull.

I suggest we upgrade our registration system to incorporate the matching of sprites to their proper class names, this way almost no one will be able to register to the forums without a basic understanding of the game. This will stop all the newbies asking us where to get third class items, how to level and gear their sinx on a 1bil/1bil/1bil server, and general stupid questions. 100% serious and I think it would be a great benefit to the forum community. I'm 100% serious and would love to see this implemented, but it's up to you yC.

As far as I am concerned, this forum is not for the vet of RO only.  You are free to ignore those "newbies asking us where to get third class items, how to level and gear their sinx on a 1bil/1bil/1bil server".  Or find a community that fits your need in that case.

We are suppose to welcome new comers to the game and let the player base expand as much as possible.  If we bar new comers from enjoying the game, it will not help the already decreasing population of RO.

Gankz if they start to get overly selective about members than the popularity of rms will go down and they can potentially stop making as much money as they already do. Sucks though cause I agree that some of the threads being made are simply ridiculous and there's really no reason why they can't ask those questions on whatever server they are a part of.

Well it doesn't take a veteran to match up classes, it's not like we're asking people to list card effects or anything really complicated. If anything it's just for the health of these forums and keeps away people who seem to break the rules every day, fail to read the rules, etc. It's really just a deterrent because anyone can go to the skill database and you have every class sprite, both male and female matched up with their class name.

@Kissa
It's not really being completely selective, it's as I said it's not going to bar everyone from the forums, it doesn't take a lot of insight into actually seeing which classes are which. The thing is it isn't exactly for the website, just the forums.

Perhaps something like a minimum post requirement to create a thread instead?

I wasn't disagreeing with you. If anything I was being a touch snarky (migraines do that to me, my bad). I agree that it would help to have some kind of verification, especially since I've seen on forums where new members make a thread with a link in it to a virus and blah blah blah.

Sorry to say but, the fact that I have seen that attitude so often within the RO community is likely one of the reasons that the population is not replenishing or expanding.  I have seen servers where the community will literally NOT answer a basic question and if they dare to post it on the forums they get nothing but flamed/trolled for not knowing.

Remember, everyone was new to this game at some time.  Even if you have been playing for what seems like all your life, you were not born with the knowledge of how to play.

Rather than treating the new players like they are stupid for asking basic question if they received help in a friendly manner the population would grow.  And I would think if you had all the knowledge you would want to share...

Well in that case there wouldn't be much problem at all, however it's generally asked in a  way which only means to annoy others and shows complete lack of interest in them bettering themselves, by themselves. I'd gladly help a newbie along if they were asking questions that haven't been answered in months, or simply don't exist around the forums, or hell i'd answer them simply for being polite. However, things aren't like that and mostly what we're getting here is "how 2 play sinx on shr  ??? ??? ??? ???" with that grammar.

It isn't like we're barring them from any form of support at all, if they really are -that- new to the game. Isn't this what their server's forums are for?

They are inevitably part of the people that roam the internet, we set no boundaries for that.

You will run into people that are like 'hai ned help kthx' but really now? People act like mirrors anyway, they've probably seen it elsewhere and copied that attitude.
Gradually, they will better themselves and that can only be done through experience and time. I recall me being an idiot too when I first entered the web, specifically on Newgrounds, allcaps and LoLoLoL TyPiNg LiKe DiS so yeah.

If they really are new to this game, they are allowed to ask questions, it is up to you to decide whether you answer it or not, be irritated by the question or not and so on. (How hard is it ignore a topic that says 'hai ned helpz?' think about that :/)

Well, it seems the character match suggestion doesn't have a chance, but what about a restriction on creating a topic unless you have a certain amount of posts? Something like 5 or so. 5 posts would give people enough time to learn at least a little bit how the forum works and would might enlighten them to use the search button or something? I don't really see too many issues with that.

This is kinda a different suggestion but sorta has to do with the newbie thing anyways. I'd like to suggest archive sections made. All posts made and ended in 2007 would go in the 2007 archive, where everything in that archive is viewable by everyone but no one can post. Thus avoiding situations like we had recently with the 2+ year necro post.

Perhaps a forced search before someone is allowed to start their first thread in some sections.  A way of putting the search capabilities of RMS before a thread can be started in particular sections.

I open a catagory and when I click "New Topic" it opens the search window.  Once I have posted X number of times it no longer requires I search before I post.

just a thougth... :D

I like how my totally relevant and decent suggestion went unnoticed =/ guess I'll start a brand new suggestion thread for it, maybe then it'll get noticed.

Post counts don't work.

The ones for the server seeking threads and the shoutbox have already proved people just spam their way through. Why add to it even more?

Well than it could be there EVERY time someone opens a thread.  Not like it would take that much longer to type in a word and check...  :-\
