Title: New "6 month old" reviews
Post by: Pandora on May 26, 2008, 09:02 AM
Warning: this is a ranting topic. It serves no other purpose than to get the whine out, I don't expect anything to be done about it, I just had to get it out there.

I hate the new system that shows only reviews from the past 6 months >_<

Why should older reviews be purged from the system? If they still hold true I don't see why they should be gone.

To help new servers? Why? As with anything new, you have to compete with those who were there before you and made efforts to build a place for themselves. I don't really see why new servers should get it easier. If you join a server, it will already have established guilds usually, you'll have to fight and earn your place, this is the same. Of course older server will have more reviews over time, but they worked hard for it, new servers can do the same and one day they'll be the "old servers" too.

My server had 92 reviews, 92 hard-earned reviews for well over a year, yesterday when I checked it showed 45 T_T felt like half of our work was gone. I know it's still "there" if you change the default setting to see all, but most people wont.

Strangely enough we kept the same place in the ranking (#4 low rate) while most other servers moved around lots.

Anyhow, I sorta understand "why" it was done, but I'm still bummed about it -_- [/rant]

Suggestions: have the system send an email to old reviewers whose reviews are gone from the default setting, to encourage them to re-new their review if they still play on said server.

They werent purged, go read the topic again.
There is a option to show how old the reviews are on the ranking, and 6 months is the default.

Read above?

I prever countless times the new system, gives chance to new servers to get up on the rank, while previously, even with 30 reviews you wouldnt show up on the first page.
So you had to:
A) Fake reviews
B) Give up on advertising at RMS.

Also member of heRO, but on the other hand I think it's quite advantageous to new and old servers alike. Many servers indeed moved around, but old servers that continue to grow will remain in the top 10 or so to "rival" that of the new servers. As a server continues to grow, there are new players and reviews will keep coming to bump them within the top 10 even with the 6 months clearance. While some of the former top 10 dropped to who knows where, some servers endured to show that growth is continual and stability of the server is maintained. Those that disappeared, was probably living in some former glory of the "good old days" type of thing that failed to keep up.

@Brainstorm: I did read yC's post, I guess you failed to read mine entirely.

It still results in a purge because barely any players will change the default view. "Purge" is the word used by yC in her post which is why I used it.

i think 6 months is a long enough time to give the advantage for older server vs new server, you still is 6 months ahead of any new server when competing.  If you look at some of the higher rate lists (with showing all time results), there are servers with 300~ reviews and the server below them have at least 50~100 reviews less.  From that it's hard to have the ranking move around, it gets boring when the same servers are at the top for nearly a year isn't it?

If your rank doesn't change dramatically, means your server is doing good in the new system.  Please understand I am doing this because (it has been mentioned many times in suggestion) server changes over time.  I can't count how many times I see a server started out nicely and then within months it turns into a donation hell or corrupted gm heaven.  (That's not the point, RMS does not have a say on what goes on in a server.)  The point is the reviews have to keep up with what's actually going on in a server.  We can't expect old players that left the server to delete their review, so the new system will do the job.

I am thinking of emailing a newsletter to server owners to tell them about the update and to edit their server info for the ethicity/lang and server mode.  I don't think I will be emailing players because it's a lot of email there, don't want to get blacklisted in spam list ...

I know, I know.. just ranting.

bleh.

If not email, any way for players to get a notice when they log into RMS maybe? Like "this review you made 7 months ago is no longer shown, would you like to refresh it? yes/no" sorta?

Having an automated email might not be necessary, but would it be fine for server owners to take the initiative on their own and encourage players to update their reviews?

Something on the lines of "Due to the new rating system that RMS has implemented, we'd appreciate it if you took the time to update your server reviews with your current opinion about our server. This can be done by deleting your old review and creating a new one."

Since player opinions can change over time, freshly updating their reviews would paint a more accurate picture of how the server is doing now.

Actually, giving people an option to "refresh" their review would be nice. Basically let them edit it, to add in any changes that happened in the last few months, and give it another 6 months time in life.

Yeah I agree, that'd be nice. And something easy, like the click of a button, because sometimes players are lazy :\
