Like / Dislike Buttons on reviews?
« on: Oct 03, 2011, 09:43 pm »
As the subject suggests.. adding like/dislike buttons on reviews? Or, something like the review system on Amazon or any number of sites that states, "X-amount of people found this review helpful."

Just an idea. Not sure if anyone pitched this yet in the past, but I think it would be phenomenal and would be a great way to add more depth to the review system.

Another idea would be having the top rated review display at the top of the list, or separately? And the least helpful review on the side. Not sure how the coding for it would go, but I find that feature to be extremely useful when making purchases on Amazon and other e-retailer sites where clients are able to post reviews.

+1 :P

I love this idea but many places have trouble coding it or sometimes it's completely ridiculous or glitchy. The only two things I found were the two links below that might help but otherwise I'm sure someone with better knowledge of RMS's coding can whip something up similar. If not at least the idea was/is neat.

It would be useful, except I can see how it would be abused rather easily :x people upping their own reviews, proxying their own reviews, etc. Requiring registration would ease it, but it'd still be a lot to sift through to see that "Oh! This guy's cheating blergh/" when people cheat the system enough already.

I like the idea but making it function properly without dumping unnecessary work on yC is a different story altogether. 'Would need to brainstorm how to avoid +spammers - or even, -spammers due to haters - before considering this any further :x as just saying "This would be cool, do it" doesn't address what could go wrong and how to resolve it prior to its implementation.

The rep' system we had on RMS earlier was really badly abused, s'why yC took it out. People -ing others for valid opinions, etc. just because theirs differs. It was stupid.

We don't need a popularity contest on RMS. That's all it would turn into and you all know it to be true

I can remember this was brought up even before the facebook +1 came along.

I think the idea previously suggested came from the style of amazon product review.   If at all any appreciation or depreciation on a review can alter a review's natural order it would become abusable.  Hmm, there isn't any easy way out for this problem.

As useful as it may be, I don't think it would be much of a good idea. As many have stated prior to me, it's just too abusable.
There's already here and there a complaint about supposely fake reviews, this would, sadly, just cause more uproar.

If this could be perfectly handled somehow though, then I'd favor it. But it doesn't seem too realistic that this would be the case.

What about a way to show +1's and -1's (Regristration required of course) that doesn't actually effect anything other than just show "# of people found this review helpful".

No changing the order
No deleting reviews after 100 negative votes
No increased rankings for any number of +1's

Just a visual thing, no rules on it (drama-mongering, proxy-whoring, attacks) to see how it would work out.

While I understand that the rules would help make the +1's and -1's actually USEFUL if yC doesn't want to work out a system for it that's fine.

Ultimately this is a dictatorship and the final word is up to yC
The truth hurts.

It's the same thing in essence.

I wouldn't want to see that on the website reviews; as well, if you like something, you can just plainly post on the forum that you did like it, or that you didn't. Make it elaborate and actually explain why or why you don't approve / like something.

Kinda like in class where you have to give full sentences - you can't just say "Bromine & Mercury"; you hafta say "The liquids on the Periodic Table are Bromine (Br) and Mercury (Hg)" or you'll get deducated marks for not being clear.

Not actually stating why or why you don't like something will turn bias and, again, perhaps a popularity thing or a diss contest. It only doesn't help in debates because you have nothing to argue about / no one to argue with because of being too basic.

There is really too much potential for abuse with a review system on top of a review when it comes to. I doubt anything good would come of such a system on RateMyServer simply due to the fact that opinions substantially differ from items you might be purchasing from a Retailer in retrospect to a server you might consider playing to get your Ragnarok fix. This is because of the broad range of experiences we might expect or receive from playing on each individual server respectively and how it may cater to one persons taste but not anothers.

I would think as well that any sort of tinkering wouldn't work either, be it to review the reviewers of the posts or show a top rated post without showing the +/-'s that made it so or whatever. The idea just wouldn't work well enough in helping to adequately determine what servers you would want to play on or not.

You should already be able to.  I think it's just 3 posts so that we know you are here not just to advertise in your sig or spam pm (bots do that a lot ...).

@topic: idk, put the ordering matter aside for a moment.  I can see good reviews getting thumb down from haters and bad reviews getting thumb down from loyal players.  It'll just look bad wouldn't it?  So a "Like" or "How many people find this review useful?" might be a good idea, while a "Dislike" or "thumb down" could be abusive is what I am getting so far.

Thinking about it, if it merely is a "how many people find this review useful" it might come in handy. Even though, one could argue that this still is a bit abusive, for example a hater telling his friends to upvote it because they were all kicked or something.

But nevertheless, I guess this version could be rather useful.

I'm confused.  I don't understand how this would be abusive outside of uselessly popularizing reviews.

I can see how this button could help players figure out which reviews were more popular--whatever a popular review means.  This feature won't change the amount of reviews a server needs to get higher ranked on the lists, and if you require ppl to sign in before they hit that +1 button, then that should cull the amount of fakes you get.

Even if a super lauding review gets 1,000,000 -1s, or a scathing flame gets 5,000,000 +1s, all this really is is a review popularity contest.  And if you think about it, if one (good/bad) review gets a thousand +1s, there's a really good chance that someone else will write another review with similar (good/bad) content anyhow (which will also get a few +/-1s as well).

tl; dr:  +/-1s don't affect the number of reviews a server receives, and thus doesn't affect its ranking on RMS.  A popularly +/-1'd review will more than likely already be echoed in subsequent reviews as well.
