Emulator used

Maybe I'm the only one interested in that, but I would really like it if the server list on the website would also list the emulator used (Aegis, eAthena, rAthena, Herc, etc.) and you could filter for it. Emulators have developed very far apart by now so it has actually become quite meaningful which emulator a server is based on, but server owners never even list the emulator used on their website, so I always have to register everywhere first just to ask. If it was on RMS they'd be forced (or inclined) to enter it, saving me a lot of registrations.

I'd say have a space for it, but don't make it mandatory. The last thing we need is for someone to discover an exploit on a specific emulator then go try it on servers who don't regularly update theirs.

I don't see any negative effect on showing the emator used. If they are scared that a known bug might be abused then sorry to say but they are incompetent server owners.

Having an option to list the type of emulator a server is operating under would be nice.

This should also solve frequently asked questions regarding server emulator/versions.

Zero.

As good as the idea may be, some might use it as just another criteria to compare servers and pick only the one they are used to, even before they check out the server and see how much improvisations have been made. I think it is only right that servers should take the initiative and credit the source somewhere on their website. Maybe just the logo of the emulator used at the bottom of the website or something. It's like eating free cake and not even bothering to say a simple thank you.

Which is exactly why this is so helpful. I don't care what improvisations a server did. I know emulators good enough to know that there are years of bugfixes difference and any server staff that currently exists just doesn't have the manpower/time to merge these bugfixes all into another emulator. Heck, most servers can't even keep up-to-date with the latest emulator version.

I realize you are someone who is fine with customization so you don't care so much about the emulator used, but I can tell you that from the viewpoint of someone that just wants a 100% official experience that emulator used means everything.

Players who want a customized server just won't check for emulator used, instead they usually get all the information they need on the server's website, because customization, unlike emulator used, is usually explained on the website.

That's a rather bold statement though. I've been doing just that along with fixing hundreds of things on my own just fine.

Your idea is nice but things aren't always black or white, so this should come with an optional field where a server's owner can describe the nuances.

A little too quick to judge, aren't we?
I was merely pointing out that it won't serve your intended purpose of identifying which server is the ideal one with the close to official experience. Besides, you won't know if that server hasn't already fixed most of the common bugs with the emulator they are using. Hence I will also have to disagree with your statement regarding bug fixes as well. Any decent server running for a good period of time would've identified and fixed more issues that are not yet identified or reported with the emulator.

Certainly would be nice to add the ability to describe the nuances. Could even be a check box "Close to official" and "Custom" and if you select custom there's a field where you can describe it.

Well ok I apologize, thought I've read another post from you were you said that, but I guess I mixed you up!

That's definitely not the case. They might fix some critical exploits not fixed on their emulator, but I've never seen a server implementing changes (to official behavior) that require restructuring of the code or in-depth investigation on official servers.
Some examples:
- Official waterball behavior that deploys invisible waterball cell and then uses them from bottom-left to top-right by turning them into waterballs
- Official line of sight system for every skill
- Preventing status changes to display wrongly or lose a second or two when relogging
- Correct behavior for every single skill when used against Icewall and Trap
You won't see these on a server that is based on an emulator that doesn't have implemented this correctly yet.

Not to mention that I wouldn't like this either. If they have the skill to do complex fixes like that they should be helping on the emulator rather than fixing it only for themselves.

I do get where you're coming from and I do understand the purpose for which you suggested it. I don't think it's a bad idea but people might only just judge a server based on emulator alone and don't bother with it. I've seen a lot of servers over the years fixing a bunch of issues (maybe not as big as the ones you mentioned). Sadly though, they don't bother reporting it to the emulator or help the source in any way. I do wish that people just mentioned the emulator they are using on their webpage and contributed to the source every time they identify something. Worst of all are those crash issues and they usually keep it to themselves. Perhaps they think that it is better that way if they have an upper hand over their potential competition.
