I'm actually not sure if this topic should go here (or if its already been suggested?)
Buuuuuuuut I suggest maybe a seperate board to review and discuss various hosters?

I've been through 2 VPS so far (where we host our downloads only) and both have been incredibly terrible experiences xD It would be neat to have somewhere to share these experiences (and review them) and keep new server owners from going to the same place and save them the trouble and time. Not just for bad hosters though, reviewing the good ones would help too I'd think :].

I know theres a section here already for RO hosters, but what about hosting outside of that?

Aah.. sorry if I was unclear, I'm still in a rage about the last VPS xD

*Agrees with this*  People seem to think that System In Place or those other RO hosters are amazing; I guess because they cater towards RO and sometimes provide tools for RO itself.  Although in my experiences with VPS and Dedicated boxes, all reputable hosting companies would easily be able to figure out errors that RO list (my last host, which I left because I needed a dedicated box) helped setup the RO server with no knowledge of eAthena whatsoever (just by reading the error outputs lol).

Should be split into three categories (if 3rd is needed): VPS, Dedicated, Web Hosting.

@off-topic slightly: Futurehosting would be a great cheap host for RO or just downloads Euphie =P  Not to mention they have a great deal going on for a long time in their "Specials" section (35% off and double stuff xD)

Using Rackspace now, they've been awesome (been with them before) plus it has CDN so downloads will come off the server closest to whoever is downloading, pretty awesome and I'd recommend them to anyone needing a hoster for anything xD;;

Anyway, hmm I think probably the 3rd wouldn't be needed but I guess splitting those up into the 2 categories would help keep things organized :]

If this is rejected, I have to think of a way to warn people about what I've been through xD hmm

Some hosting companies were discussed in the off-topic sections if i recall correctly.  You may use that for hosting discussion.  A section dedicated for that would be a relatively small section, even smaller than the game-master talk section.  The two cases were isolated problems, I don't want a section to bash RO hostings yet.  How many hosts are there to discuss, definitely fewer than the number of reviews for ro servers.

Makiness

Hmm, even though it may (or may not) be a relatively small section, I still think it'd be worth the effort (which is almost none) to make it.  Currently there is no place that reviews or discusses Hosting at all.  Not to mention, most people don't even consider thinking outside of the RO community to find hosting offers (like WHT).  Just implement some new rules if needed (although the current rules are just fine) to prevent bashing.  Other communities that discuss hosting work out fine with their basic rules.

Euphie and I would even be willing to moderate such a small section =p  Yes, I threw out her name randomnly and I assume she'll say yes xD

Hmmm review for hosting not yet needed i think

It may seem like a good idea; however, there's just going to be drama about the hosting services. That would also attract the Admins/staff members of those services to come here and argue with the players (like that's not done enough on eAthena for SIP and Frantech already). There aren't that many other RO hosting services out there unless you know how to use VPS's yourself without the hoster's help for setup and such. I think such discussion exists on the RO hosting thread in the Paid section already.

For hosting beyond RO... I think that would be best discussed in the Off-Topic section. After all, RMS is a forum directed for RO purposes/servers/players.

I think there is need of approved paid services and other which might be not approved but would be good as approved paid services

We have already seen how easy is to cheat a system like this (refer to the last locked topic in "Paid Services"). Anyone can just make a new account on the forums to review multiple times the host they like. Besides, if you thought that inter-server drama was something... just wait for inter-hosting drama. Lol.
In a range of 2 months we have seen 3 hosting services being locked due to scams, bad treatment towards their customers, and finally, making multiple accounts to review themselves. A review section for this services would only generate drama OR 100/100 reviews.

Users already post reviews on each service's thread anyway.

@Warock: +1. That would save us soooooo much trouble.

And so you killed yourself,
but you killed everyone else around you too.

Yeah, our current paid hosting section is good enough XD and has enough things to deal with.

well i agree that we should have strict guidelines on what is allowed =D

So was it okay to use a forum section as reviews and discuss different hosting. Sometimes it can be bias

lets not bring this drama up again.

Tom~

Did I ever say that Frenzi Hosting was a scam? If you had bothered to read and analize my post you would've seen that, when I mentioned Frenzy, was because of
Quotemaking multiple accounts to review themselves
as stated by Riotblade when he locked the thread.

@Warock: Your post is exactly what I was talking about. :>

Anyway, yes, let's not argue here... my inbox is always open if required.

I'm still against a review section for hosting services... it's really not necessary. Like I already said, customers can simply review the service on the thread that was created in Paid Services.

And so you killed yourself,
but you killed everyone else around you too.
