"Blackmarks"?
« on: Aug 05, 2009, 10:21 am »
So here's the idea, it's pretty obvious that when choosing a server few people will actually read the forums(much less the hall of shame section) so they just choose one and see the reviews, so here is the main part, upon when a negative shameful/unethical point of the server is discovered (Such as GMs being corrupt/server steals customs/Admin encourages advertising in other servers) and throughfully proven to be truth, the server will be marked with a blackmark on it's review page saying the reason outside and a link to the thread, it could be a good way into preventing servers from acting like major fagbags and thus less spam of "X stole my custom" or "X server advertises" on the hall of shame

Well even though the server shamed itself by Bribing for Reviews, Advertisement in other servers, or whatever It could still be a good server (just not a smart one)
Anywhoo...
If people don't want to play shameful servers, then yes. That would be handy. You can probably use that GIF to mark the servers

I'd say no to that.  We are not the judge here.  Reviews are written by players (supposed to be), hall of shame forum posts could be coming from people like us that never played the server.  Not fair to the server at any way.  It's the internet, i doubt anything can be throughfully proven to be truth AND be agreed by everybody including the server authorities.  If not then it will be a never ending argument.

No, I believe we have no right to judge over things like copyright / stealing other content because those are still very unbalanced discussions. Even GM corruptness is a shady discussion..

Edit:
If we start branding servers.. then I wouldn't advertise my server here if there's a chance of my server being degraded infront of the public.

You are kind of right, there is a way to brand certain servers by fakeing screenies and stuff, it would be impossible to get proper justice like that,

It's one thing to link the server to the hall of shame thread over something like "This is a corrupt GM" with no proof. The system would only be used for proven abuse. If things like a whole GRFs was stolen from other servers, that could be something you could prove.

It's hard to know WHO made the first GRFs, but GM Corruption is something pretty easy to know if one has screenies, even though, like relic said, it's still pretty shady

An interesting idea, but as yC said already, the idea could be easily abused.  You would get people purposely going out of their way to get rival servers a "blackmark", including submitting fake chat logs/edited screenshots.. etc.  In the majority of cases, we wouldn't be able to prove whether these claims are real or not.  I prefer the Hall of Shame system we have now, where we let the users of RMS judge each server report.

Also, you'd be surprised how many people probably visit the Hall of Shame here.  There's always a large number of Guest users on RMS who browse around the forum without registering.

Overall not a bad idea, but I'd have to vote no on this one, sorry.

Most you can do is that once a server got any related thread in the hall of shame, setup quick links to those threads so people can read about it instead of a "X" with horribly negative connotation.

Yeah, I think this could work, the X could mean anything to uninformed people

It's not a neutral system anymore if we only give hint on the negative remarks.  Why shouldn't we link anything if someone think the server is good etc?  I know it's rare around because any "semi-good" comment could be easily taken as advertisement.

This is a one way system to impact a server.  Not something I wish to have.

I think if they started using Black Marks, less and less people will keep using RMS for their server listing.

You are kind of right, most people use RMS due to it's neutrality, adding these blackmarks would make it seem somewhat biased
