TalonRO is a 5/5/3x server that can reach up to 8/8/3x depending on the Reward System. It has 1000-1500 people online.

I have been playing tRO for almost a year. TalonRO is a damn good server imo, and I'm glad to found it. I was downloading several server installer (with my pitiful download speed), but when tRO installer finished the download and I installed it, I instantly forgot about other installers I've been downloading. It's simply that good.

GMs
Server Owner : BlackTalon
High GMs : Boreas, Seiren, Shiris, Howl
Event GMs : Azul, Cherri, Rainbow, Kuma, Azrael, Aurelia

One thing to note, none of the high GMs are active player. This is an effective way to reduce the amount of corruption to near zero. On the other hand, this also gives a disadvantage on the development of PvP and WoE, since (imo) those 2 aspects of RO requires a real-time experience before any changes about them are made. Still, the advantage of no corruption (one thing that seems to be the downfall of most pservers) heavily overweigh the slow development of PvP or WoE.

You could say all the GMs are friendly, with a small note to Boreas. He's an Administrator for a reason, of course, and he seems to be the perfect guy about no corruption policy and dealing with stuffs regarding tRO development (scripts, security company, etc), but he needs fixing on the community communication skill. His opinions are well-tought, but he could be a bit rude on speaking them, in a way.

No complaints about other GMs. Seiren is a good GM regarding support tickets, and Howl is simply lovely for his personality and newsletter. I hardly see BlackTalon and Shiris both in-game and at forum, but seeing their old posts, they seems to be good people.

Support Tickets take up to 48 hours to be taken care of.

The event GMs are an amazing bunch. They held events quite regularly, and none of the eventss requires a sufficient level to join, everyone is welcome. This means a same opportunity for newbies and veterans to win them, and getting the prizes.

You could reach the GMs through !request in-game, support ticket, PM at forum, IRC (support chat).

Community
The community is friendly, with a touch of trolls and butthurts on !main. If you ask at !main in a good way (not spamming and such) and could endure the troll/butthurt that might target you during the wait, you'll get your answer. Several people conclude the community is bad just from the trolls, which is dumb. Play more, and you'll find the nice people of !main. Of course, you being the nice person who answer other's questions would mean other people will treat you nicely (or at least other nice people will note you).

Out of !main, the community is good. You can ask people at town (sadly many people dont do this because of !main), and most of people who hang out at towns are nice, assuming you dont beg/push them to get what you want.

Forum
The forum is best. It's very active. There are hardly any troll, and assuming you ask at the right section, you'll get your answer (and if you didnt get the right section, you still get your answer most of the time). The sad part, hardly any newbies bother using that search button. THAT SEARCH BUTTON. As the result, most of the questions at Strategies and Tips (section for asking about where to farm, how to level, etc) are same questions repeated over and over. All in all, forum is the best place to ask about stuffs.

Economy
The best economy I've ever seen. For a 6 years old server, item prices is rather low. The Keys : Reward Guru and Reward System. Since most of the cards are sold at guru for Talon Coin (TC), this creates a cap for them. This means no uber high price for marc/evil druid card (which is important at pvp/woe, I took that 2 cards because those cards are always on high demand on any servers, especially low rate) and other cards. Note the low rate. Card drops are 0.03%, so without the guru giving cap, it's possible for highly demanded cards to reach 20m+ Next part, reward system. Every vote you did will give you a vote points that can be exchanged to Copper Coins (CC). Cc can be exchanged to TC with a certain exchange rate. The lowest exchange possible is 50 CC -> 1 TC (1 sets of voting give at least 10 CC, vote every 12 hours). Exchange rate can change based on the amount of vote. Basically, every week there'll be a vote goal. If it's reached, the exchange rate will be lowered by 5, up to 50->1. As you can guess, at a low exchange rate, people would exchange their CC to TC -> TC's amount are high on market -> lower TC price (on zeny). This means you could get the items/cards you want on guru for lower price -> lower price of items/cards on market. On the other hand, high exchange rate will affect the economy in a way, slightly raising prices of all items sold in guru. This is why reward system is a very important tools of economy, and this tools is completely affected by community, through voting. Every successful voting goal will made the next week's goal to increase slightly, and every failed voting goal will made the next week's goal to decrease slightly. This means a very dynamic economy, and I'll enforce it for the second time, this dynamic economy is completely on the hand of community.

Donations are available, $1 for 1 TC (and 1 TC is roughly 1.05m currently). A person donating -> more TC on market -> lower price of TC -> lower price overall for almost every items. So, as you can see, a mass donation would not break the economy, it'll just decrease TC price, and as such decreasing other item's price. Even if the donator forcing to sell his TC on a high price, other people can ignore that donator and get their own TC through voting/minigames (you can play Bingo/Monster Race and win ~10 CC, I forgot the exact amount, for every win). Or they could hunt Monster of the Week, a certain monster that is tagged for that week which will drop 1 cC and a certain item at a mysterious drop rate.

Another important aspect on economy is !whosell/!ws. This certain command allow even a newbies to gain control over the economy. When I first joined, I keep !ws for stuffs such as Piece of Cake/Strawberry (important HP/SP healing for Vanilla PvP/WoE), Blue Herbs, Blue Potion, Witch Starsand, etc. I sounds like a businessman =.= Well, basically I !ws them, and bought all low-priced cakes/straws/blue herbs/etc, and revend them on a slightly higher price. These !ws also mean a newbie could control item prices if he want (and if he know). You could argue "there's no way newbie could get the money to buy those cakes/straws/stuffs to control the price", but I did it. I just need to kill several easy monsters (Myst Case for cakes, Wolf for Straws, and both of them gives good exp), and vend those items, get my zenies, and recycle it through buy and resell. Ofc this is risky since a random guy could mass sell at a much lower price, that particular items you tried to control the price, but you can just wait, and with the high population, that random guy's item will be quickly absorbed, and you can start your control again.

Autoloot is limited to level 70 (if you are about to join, before you start complaining, use THAT SEARCH BUTTON on our forum), which removes those 1-shot Double Strafe-Teleport snipers. This means the farm speed is reduced in a way, and as such SQI/SQI bonus ingredients service is a viable income, as shown next.

A notable part of economy, is services selling, such as leech/seals. Leeching services is popular here, People can just farm items/cards, sell it for zeny, and buy leech to gain their level. They also have the option to party (with 15 level gap for even share exp and nice exp bonus), or they could solo (this is a bit out of the economy topic, I know). Another services is seals service. There are also special Grape Juice (GJ) leech sold by champion. Basically, you gave them 3-4k GJ (the ingredients are readily available at npc, 200z for grapes, 3z for empty bottle) and they will leech you at Dimensional Gorge while farming for diablos manteau/skin of ventoss/what not.

Seals are basically a quest to defeat tons of monsters and MvPs to gain access to Valhalla. There are 4 seals, Prontera/Nifflheim/Manuk/Yuno, and completing them gives you access to Valhalla, where you could make Super Quest Items (SQI). Since the monsters at seals is hard for people to defeat without a proper party, seals service is an option if you have the zeny. Ofc, SQI is a strong items, with each classes have their own SQI. It's good, but not necessary. People with the right gears could farm nearly as good as SQI owners.

SQI itself requires various items to make, and even more items to give bonus to (you can give SQI up to 4 certain bonuses to make it stronger), and these opens up even more farming choices. SQI/SQI bonus ingredients service is also a choice to sell here.

All in all, this server have a very healthy economy, and with my laziness (totally no farming, I just hang out at minigames/buy and resell), I still can save around 1b worth of items now (that would mean 1000 TC -> $1000 if I donate). Several newbies who started around the same time even is richer than me (3b or more @.@), and none of us are donating. Donations is balanced, where donators could get their items quickly, but there are no exclusive donation items that overwhelm normal items. Non-donator can get the same items as donator, although slower.

Guild Competition
As I've said before, because of the facts that none of the high GMs are actively playing, our WoE/PvP development is quite slow. For the early 9 months of my experience in tRO, most guild just defend on emperium room. The last 3 months, some guilds tried to bring a change of style in WoE to GvG style instead of portal defense, and they are quite successful lately.

Sadly, there are only first edition (FE) WoE here, no WoE 2.0 (last WoE 2.0 event are around 4 months ago) or battlegrounds. There are Vanilla WoE/PvP where MvP cards and SQI are disabled, and Unrestricted PvP/WoE where everything is avaiable. The GMs said they are working for BG, but seeing the time it took for them, it seems to be low in their list, so for now guilds just have to be satisfied with what's available.

Also, Boreas said that tRO is more of PvM server, so that's it, I guess. No complaints from me about this, although I'm still hoping.

Class Balance
Classes are balanced, from what I see.

On farming, almost every classes can compete (except the poor extended classes). Knight can farm with Bowling Bash (BB), while Crusader can farm at Glast Heim Churchyard (GHC) with their Grand Cross, where the mobs are modified to tons of zombie and skeleton prisoners. Rogue is a popular choice of farming class, with Mavka/Sleeper/Geffenia as popular place for them. Triple Attack is popular plagiarism choice, or BB later for stalker and people with GEC (general egnigem cenia card, slotted at shoes, giving boost to hp/sp, and gives 100 HP and SP regen every 10 seconds, practically removing the need of sp healing items). Assassin can farm at mavka/sleeper/geffenia/mobster (they modified Kokomo beach to have ~40 Mobsters (I forgot the exact amount) with 75% Sapphire drop rate) too, although they cant have the auto-steal. Priest could do Magnus Exorcismus GHC/Glast Heim Prison (GHP) with a mobber, or selling leech at abbeywhen they become rich, while Monk can do sleepers with Investigate. Hunter/Bard/Gypsy is popular for farming Stings, which drops Glove[1] and Sting Card (modified to DEX+4), where those two items are important to reach instant cast the cheap way. Wizard can farm at GHC/GHP with Storm Gust+Quagmire, while Sage simply sucks (lol). Sage can farm GHC/GHP too with firewall/heaven's drive, but hardly anyone made sage for farming, most sage around are for endow slave. Alchemist got buffs for their homunculus (2x HP and I forgot), while Blacksmith/Whitesmith is another popular choice for rich people, due to the ability to Greed. They requires gears to roll, though. One-shotted MvP is dominated by HW/Champion/Creator, as usual.

Ninja, Super Novice, TaeKwon ranker, Gunslinger, and Soul Linker simply sucks at farming, and before anyone complaint, I'll just point out that there are much better classes to farm at. Star Gladiator is a popular class to sell leech, Odin Leech for base exp and Dimensional Gorgle/Morocc Leech for job exp (especially for Transcendent 2nd class).

I dont PvP much, so I cant tell, but on WoE, almost all classes is ok. I wont talk about their effectiveness, so you can figure it out yourselves. Melee squad consists of LK, SinX, Whitesmith, Sacrifice Pally, Champion. Ranged squad consists of Focused Arrow Strike Sniper, Creator, HW, Bolter Prof, Full Buster Gunslinger, Shield Chain/Pressure Pally. Support squad consist of HP, Prof, Soul Linker, Clown, Status Arrow Shower Sniper, SPP Creator, Ganban HW. Special squad are Ecaller Stalker, Breaker Sinx/Star Gladiator, Trapper Sniper, Devotion Pally, Screamer/Slow Grace Gypsy. Ninja and TaeKwon ranker are of unknown use, although Ninja can be a random squad at Unres WoE (their SQI removes the need of ninja stones).

Note that Asura strike have 15 seconds after cast delay here, so champs have to asura the right person at the right time. For PvP, Champs can rape with Finger Offensive. Several people complained about bio being OP at PvP due to available AD ingredients at shop and buffed homun, but in WoE bio is balanced. Their buffed homuns are stunned/frozen/dead while they themselves are forced to be low vit which dies to wizards or high vit which dies to another bio (that can tank the enemies' AD with devo guildmates/pneuma support)

The server itself
Popular healing items are Meat (heals around 2x red potion with modified 2 weight) and Grape Juice (With lv10 Discount, it costs 159z each to make, with modified 0.5 weight).  MvP Cards are readily available here (with modifications) for 12 or 20 TC, with exception of Maya Purple Card (modified here, it's like free Box of Sunlight for 10 seconds with a 60 seconds cooldown, only useful at Unres PvP/WoE). While people can complaints about this being overpowered, my experience here have shown that this system is totally balanced. If you have read the Economy part above, you would see that these cards are available for anyone, and their price is 21m-ish, which is like 21 hour of farming if your farm rate is 1m/hour (average farm rate is 2m/hour, leech price rate is 2m/hour for abbey, 4-6m/hour for odin, 6m/hour for thor, 4-6m/hour for morocc). Not to mention you can get your zenies simply though voting and exchanging it to TC. I totally prefer a widely-available MvP cards (although I never expect this aspect too when I joined) where people are evened instead of a server where a GTB cards will put you on a whole different level, and could be priced to 2b (and most of them are servers with inflation). Not to mention those servers tends to have real-money trading to zeny/MvP cards, from my experience.

The best aspect about the server : It's alive. GMs keep making seasonal events (for an idea about duration of events; last 5 seasonal events : Christmas, Valentine, Lunar new year, Sixth-Year anniversary, and currently Easter) with most of the events giving headgears and costumes. Not to mention the amazing updates, allowing us to have Bibilan 6 and renewed El Dicastes and Dewata mob on a pre-renewal environment.

From what I saw on other short-playtime reviews, they are wrong at expecting the popular items.

*Warning : Wall of Text incoming, and more of guide actually*

Popular Equipments here

Upper headgear : Lord Kaho's Horn (Kaho), 50 TC at guru, this means 52-54m at market. It gives STR/INT/DEX/MDEF+20. This is the aim for many people. I myself wait for 2 months before suddenly a spike of luck on my part got me 60m in 2 days, lol. You can customize your kaho for 10 TC to a customized kaho (CKaho) which is basically a headgear with kaho stats. This gives people the option to be fashionable while getting the stats. You might think it's overpowered, but considering the time it took to get one, it's worth it. For vanilla PvP/WoE, beret or anything that gives 10% demi human reduction is popular for front classes.

Mid headgear : Slotted STR/AGI/INT+1 mid. There are no other stat for slotted mid, so if you think a robo eye[1] gives dex, you are wrong. It gives INT+1. We have a wide variation of slotted headgears, so people can be fashionable while getting the stat they want. Popular cards are bloody knight (ATK+30), Gryphon (too long to mention the effects), Mistress (20 TC), Vanberk.

Low headgear : Best are ***** Cat Bell which gives 5 def, with 25 TC price on guru. You might think it's overpriced, but it's 5 def on a lower headgear. It's a luxury, You can Though. People prefer 5-10 TC lower headgear that gives MATK/ATK+1%, INT/AGI/STR/LUK/VIT+1 or ATK+5 (there are a cheap quest for an ATK+5 lowe headgear). There are no DEX+1 lower.

Armor : Newbies loves pantie+undershirt, which are widely vended for ~50,000z each. Advanced people get stat-enchanted armor with choices as follow : STR/AGI/DEX/VIT/INT/LUK+1/2/3, DEF/MDEF/CRIT+2/3/4, ASPD+1/2/3%, For mvp hunters/high end farmers, swapping RSX elemental armors (RSX is 12 TC, elemental armors[1] is 10 TC) is the hit.

Weapon : Various weapons are popular, depending on the classes. Ofc MvP-carded weapons have their popularity, but weapons such as Ice Pick (nerfed to -30% dmg to demi-human and emperium) for farming sleepers/geffenia, weeder knife/caesar's sword for farming mavka is even more popular. in fact, Caesar's Sword/Ice Pick + Fire endow could be better (and much cheaper) in mavka/sleeper compared to a +7 Mes[Doppel-TurtleGeneral-TurtleGeneral). Again, notice that most MvP cards are modified here.

Shield : shield arent so important here, because def isnt that important for newbies with the cheap meats. MvP hunters/high-end farmers get Valk Alice (valk is 35 TC at guru, Alice 10 TC) with GTB guard to swap (GTB is 20 TC). GTB is not overpowered here. You can roll to unres WoE/PvP with gtb, and raped by bio/knight/sinx/champion/what not. In WoE, especially, wizard's role is to force people to swap from Toad (35% demi human reduction, 20 TC) to gtb, making them squishy to other classes.

Garment : Undershirt. For rich people, deviling with elemental armor it is. LoD is only considered for place with  various elemental attacks. Stem Worm hood/muffler (modified to DEX+5) is a nice option to reach IC.

Shoes : Gargoyle (DEX+5) shoes, sleipnir[0] (25 TC, or questable). General Egnigem cenia (12 TC), Eddga (12 TC 25% HP and endure all time), Moonlight Flower (20 TC, 25% +mHP, fast move, DEX+5), Dark Lord (50% +mHP) are popular choice as well, with GEC useful almost anywhere due to less of weight from removed GJ, which is damn good for BB knight/rogue, double strafe spam hunter (which are popular farming classes), Eddga for mobbers especially whitesmith, Moonlight Flower for wizzies, and Dark Lord for high-end tanker/knights (only for high-end/knights, it's not as popular as you think). Sleipnir[1] is available as a SQI, and it's a high-end footgear with 80 level requirements (Sleipnir[0] share this req too).

Accessory : Sting Glove (total of DEX+5) for IC and hunters, mantis ring for more str, hell-poodle acc for 100% more heal from meat (it feels like a white potion). High end accessory are SQI, which are brisingamen (+6 all stat except dex, dex+3) which could be carded with ifrit (modified, no earthquake) or sting for more dex. Megingjard gives STR+30 and some mdef with 10% asura damage reduction and no STR bonus for sinx. All around a-bit-rich accessory would be Celebration Ring which gives +5 to all stats (35 TC). For Vanilla WoE, Zerom Orlean's Glove (OG is sold at guru for 10 TC, zerom for 5 TC), since sting/stem worm/gargoyle are not usable at vanilla.

Server Rules and Punishments
Trading anything in-game for anything not in-game are bannable offense. Botting is nearly impossible due to harmony and watchful GMs. KS-ing can be reported, and proved KS report will give the offender with 12 hour mute. Second KS offense by the same person can lead to up to 7 days ban. Profanity/non-english/!market or !recruit material at !main, if reported or done when a GM is around will give 3 hours mute, assuming enough warnings are made. Disrespecting GMs (and they have quite a patience for general jokes/mocking) lead to 6 hours mute. Harassment can result to 3-12 hours mute, assuming the harassed using /ex already, and the harassment is not involving sex/race. Racism/sexist comments/IGN could lead to a ban depending on severity.

Every punishment except ban is put at Punishment Log at General Section of forum, available to see by anyone. Report is done in General Report section at forum, with at most 1 week before the GMs take care of the report (they usually only take around 2 days to take care of them, though). You could also report through support ticket/PM/IRC with enough evidence, of course.

All in all, the rules are there and they are reasonable in the punishments. Every punishment is handed out if the report have enough evidence, and there are no favoritism at all.

Stability and Availability
From a simple check at speedtest.net, it seems i'm using a Grade C ISP with 0.53 Mb/s download speed and 0.47 Mb/s upload speed, and 60 Ping. IDK what those mean, anyway what I want to say is I hardly have any lag experience on tRO. Before knowing ROExt, I can open 2 clients with some lag, and now with ROExt, I can open 5 clients with almost no lag.

TalonRO is available 24/7 assuming there are no reboot/crashes like we had several days ago (because of a mass DDoS to our server, and you can check what anti-DDoS company we are using at a random ip address tracker), causing a rollback of 7 hours (that should show how often tRO doing back-up). There are not a time when it's closed just because the owner feel like he want to.

Definitely a recommended server, with a note of people who are trying : give the server a try for several weeks before you could see how it works.

Feel free to ask if you are a bit confused or interested about an aspect I forgot to mention!

Boreas

Thank you for the honest review!

Sidenote: Socrates is no longer part of the staff, he decided to quit a couple of weeks ago.

"You must be this tall play this long before you can grasp the genius of our server."  I can't think of any other server's community that insists on months of up-front time investment before you can "get it" (as if that's a motivation to play).

Having read the economy part, I seem to get the feeling your entire economy revolves around Talon Coins.

Also, if something is overpowered, but it's available to everyone, does it stop becoming overpowered?  Being overpowered means it's absolutely the best solution, as in, you would never want to NOT use it.  Just because it's available to everyone, does that actually balance things, or just give the appearance of balance?

You sure love Talon a lot, seems like you stalk the RMS forum waiting for reviews to pop up :3 TalonRO should get a restraining order maybe...

But anyways, Yes the economy does revolve around Talon Coins. I'm sorry if the server seemed like it was hiding that, was not intentional. And in my personal opinion, yea, everyone being able to get the same over powered stuff is balanced. It means everyone will be on the same level eventually. On top of that the more over powered stuff are quest items, remember? And you can't buy them with Talon Coins, you can buy cards to put in them, but what good are 2 dopple cards without a weapon to use them in? However I see that in your opinion it's not balanced, and that's ok, you're allowed an opinion, plus you don't like the server and don't play there, so it shouldn't ever be an issue for you :D

As for the "you must play this long to understand the genius" well, I think it's more that, you can't experience much in, say, 2 days? You can get some levels and see the really basic parts of the server. But most of our custom features are hidden in that time because people are busy leveling up and getting some basic gears so they can actually do things. You don't really get into the economy until you're settled into the server, just like you don't get to explore all our different farming places. You miss out on the real fun of Monster/Map of the week, hunting board, mini games, custom quests. And I can see why, the first few days are spent making it so you can actually play the server :)

Why do I get called out for this and not DeePee again?  You're not exactly innocent yourself, champ: 5/6 of your own posts are in Talon threads and your first post was, hilariously, in our own review thread as you rushed to defend it.

Recruitment for TalonRO Game Master:
- Significant experience in Ragnarok Online community management
- Must watch all RMS threads at all opportunities to either defend server or enthusiastically approve of positive reviews
- Must be able to competently prioritize time and tasks to better server nah, just keep posting in review threads

Then again, didn't you say TalonRO doesn't necessarily care about the thoughts of one person?  Why should they care about individual reviews then?  If one person posts about liking it or not, whatever, right?

I just find it hilarious how quickly and obsessively it happens every single time.  It's a jump, a call to duty as quickly as possible, hell Boreas made his post within 15 minutes of the thread being made!

The server enjoys thanking people for nice reviews, it's just manners dear :) but there is no need for us to continue spamming and being off topic on someone else's review! You have voiced your opinion and I have voiced mine in return. Let's leave this thread be now.

As I've mentioned, MvP cards turn out to be not as overpowered as it seems. Hell, I hardly use those bosses cards other than deviling, mistress and eddga for leeching (which I dont do often). And out of those three, the only must requirements before you can leech is mistress (which is ... more a convenience card).

QuoteVarious weapons are popular, depending on the classes.

Also, I said "give a try for several weeks", because the reward system change things every week, you know.

From this review, I gather that TalonRO is a pretty cool guy. Eh has a stable economy and doesn't afraid of anything.

But really, this is a pretty thorough, fair review of TalonRO. Kudos for writing it.

Passive aggressive, much? Obviously, RoseTea's commentary (which, might I add, is his/her opinion! Who cares?!) isn't always positive in regards to TalonRO and since you're affiliated with Talon (as it seems you're either a player or staff member) you're retaliating. Get over yourself, and move on. Opinions are what makes RMS go around. These threads aren't just for the server owners/staff to post opinions in - it's a free for all as long as the topic stays on subject. Hell, I've been nailed to the cross on RMS and you've just got to take it, defend it where possible, and let the spectators draw their own opinions. It's really not a big deal.
