Review: MoonlightRO

Well, there have been a number of different reviews floating around RMS regarding this server in recent days, and being someone who has played the server for a while now, I'm going to add a review of my own... from a neutral standpoint.

Stability: 7/10

MoonlightRO has teetered to both sides of the spectrum during my stay there.  There have been points in time where lag has been unbearable and other times when it was crisp as can be.  The server host, Frantech, seems to relocate quite often however, resulting in some unexpected downtime from time to time.

Availability: 8.5/10

Aside from the host-side issues, MoonlightRO has almost always been up unless the Admin states that he will be either doing maintenance or restarting the server for some reason.  There have been a number of SQL crashes in the past which can leave the server down for lengthy periods of time, but that can't really be helped, since the Admin has a life/job and can't spend the whole day watching over the server.  Which is understandable.

Game Masters - Friendliness: 6.5/10

It's been a mixed bag during my stay at MoonlightRO, there have been some spectacular GMs hired who proved to be very social and understanding... and there have been some pretty abysmal GMs that have been hired who were clearly not worthy of the position and wouldn't give players the time of day based on PvP/WoE drama they had with said players.

Game Masters - Availability: 9/10

A mixed bag as well, but the GMs that currently exist on the server are pretty consistent, and if they won't be around for a while, they tend to let the community know why via the forums.  Some GMs I see more than others, but that could be due to time zone issues.

Game Masters - Helpfulness: 8/10

[GM] Michie, [GM] Melodic and [GM] Incarnate will usually handle an issue as soon as someone PMs them about a problem.  If they don't, it usually means they're AFK.  Admin Lunar himself is quite prompt on issues that are PM'd to him via the forums.  However, he seems to be AFK most of the time in-game for reasons I'm not sure of.  [GM] Wish on the other hand mostly talks to her friends and might ignore people she has had conflicts with.

Community - Friendless: 6/10

In the past it wasn't bad, but in recent days there have been more bad apples falling from the tree.  There are still a few people who are nice to talk to that hang around town/PvP, but since a new band of players appeared lately, more aggressive behaviour has been surfacing.  w3w 5t0rm5 if you will...

Community - Eventfulness: 6.5/10

Not a whole lot goes on from day to day.  People just sit in town/PvP like they do in most SHR servers.  There were players who hosted their own events in the past, but those players have either gone or simply disappeared.

Economy: 8/10

The economy is heavily based around a few custom MvP cards to be honest.  There are tons of items that are simply not worth selling, and and handful of items that are so expensive that they're nearly deemed priceless.  Again, typical of a SHR.

Guild Competition: 7.5/10

Another element that has gone to both ends of the spectrum during my stay at MoonlightRO.  When I joined the server, WoE was nearly non-existent.  However, when the guild, NERV came to the server, WoE picked up quite a bit for a solid month or so, and then crumbled back down to non-existent in recent days.  To be fair, the server had a pretty bad character log-in crash not too long ago, so I'm going to be lenient when rating this.

Class Balance: 4.5/10

Here's the kicker.  The server is supposedly focused exclusively on PvP, yet the vast majority of classes can't even fight properly because certain classes can obtain not 100%, but 150+% long-ranged resistance and have high damage output at the same time.  The Admin has tried to compensate classes such as Archers, Ninjas and Mages by giving them certain melee skills such as Bash, Triple Attack and Meteor Assault.  This might have worked at one point in time, but since the server also has 3rd jobs, this issue has become even more absurd.  Examples are Minstrels trying to fend off a GX with Meteor Assault who's spamming Cross Impact on him.  Or a Warlock trying to Bash/Triple Attack a Royal Guard to death who is spamming Overbrand/Cannon Spear on him/her.  Anyone with a brain knows this just doesn't work.  The Admin tried to remedy this issue by making certain magic attacks melee-ranged (MATKs that hit targets wearing long-ranged resistance), but the MATKs chosen are still easily countered by slapping Frus Cards on or re-arranging their resistance in such a way that both forms of damage can be heavily resisted.  Additionally, since the character log-in crash a while ago, many custom skill changes were either changed or broken, and remain that way because the Admin didn't seem to store a list somewhere showing what he changed previously.

Total/Conclusion: 71.5/100

Overall, MoonlightRO seemed to have a lot of potential when me and my friends first joined, but as time went by, some situations arose that made a lot of players question the server's true purpose and motive.  Even a few good friends of mine on the current dev team don't know what to say anymore.

In closing.  It's worth a shot, but keep your wits about you.
