Sorry for the late response, I don't browse the RMS forums all too often :P

What Gankz mentioned is pretty true. However, the implementation of renewal wasn't well-received by everyone; yes it's different, but it nowhere nearly match the steep learning curve that pre-renewal RO presented, and although many things changed, it doesn't necessarily put everything you've learned in the past 7 years to waste. Unfortunately, no MMO playerbase in general receive drastic changes well (if any of you recall Star Wars Galaxies, lol), and many people gave up on renewal with little to no thought. Some quit outright upon implementation while others had a short-sighted vision of renewal's future and didn't give it the chance and to fully experience what it had to offer.

What this all means, of course, is that the current WoE scene on the Valkyrie server is a mess. Just like how the first Transcendent updates upset the balance when they were first implemented years back, renewal's 3rd classes brought along a variety of skills that could use some balancing. Although it took Gravity a long time to do so, WoE on RO eventually became more balanced as certain Trans skills became modified and new equipment were introduced (not saying that it was perfectly balanced, but it was a hell of alot better than it was when Trans classes were first implemented; debatable, yes.).  The most glaring problem right now is that level differences amongst your opponents mattered more than it did in pre-renewal, and until a majority of the WoE playerbase reached the high 140s, WoE is simply a one-sided affair.

@Failure: If you are still interested in just trying out official renewal mechanics for the time being, however, feel free to drop by. I am available on the iROWiki forums (xeroslash) and i check it pretty much everyday so it's easier to reach me there outside of the game; in-game, feel free to PM my rune knight (xeroslash) or my high priest (Downy Ultra). There's many changes in renewal, down to the training grounds and accessible questing for lowbies; if you get ahold of me in-game, I'll get you started with some zeny and supplies.

I was thinking about trying iRO Valk next month.  I don't want to get caught up on an MMO while I'm trying to do NaNoWriMo this month.
Would a Rogue be a terrible first class to make?  I really want to make a Shadow Chaser very much in Renewal, it is the only class that seems interesting.  Or am I better off instead making a Sage?  I've heard that you could get by in renewal for awhile with a Damascus you buy from an NPC, is that actually true?  These things are important to me for starting out on RO again.

The new items from Paradise Group are the main reason I am even willing to give Renewal a shot on officials too.  Thanks also if you should answer my questions!

Yeah, flee is pretty awesome in renewal, not to mention the freaking traps...basically if you copy claymore trap, you can one shot just about any monster that isn't above level 100. It does like 16k damage with decent dex.

Yes, it's a very viable path. You can easily aim for a gank rogue and use it to earn an income and fund future characters. In renewal, the weapon level and its attack plays a pretty big role in your overall physical damage so yes, a Damascus can bring you pretty far. The paradise group (called Eden Group in iRO) also has quests that offers free equipment as reward, including weapons appropriate for your class at higher levels. They're pretty decent equipment (on par with most NPC equipment, if not better; for example, the garment grants 10% neutral reduction) and should last you until you can either hunt for better equipment yourself, or buy better equips.

A sage might be too much work, though, but it's up to you!
