Hey everyone,

I use to own a server back in the day and recently I've had an interest of getting back into it. So I thought I would come on here and see what people thought!

Name : none yet
Rates : Under 25x, however at the moment I'm leaning towards 10x/10/x10x ~ MvP's 1x
Type: PreRE
Warper: Towns and maybe the first level of dungeons
Healer: Undecided
@commands: @autotrade, @autoloot?
Resetter: Yes
No custom items or maps
Job changer: No
Platinum Skill Npc: No

If you guys have any questions, suggestions, or comments feel free to leave them.

The most important part (in my opinion) would be the Cash Shop & Custom Item (if theres any), must not be "Overpowered" lol
also, Costumes are also important (+1 one stat from Cash Shop, and +0 stat from quest/free.. most server have very imbalance Costumes from +3 stat or allstat lol)

another thing, newbies-package.. it should ease their adventure experience (its pretty long journey after all, novice>1st job>2nd job>rebirth h.novice>h.1st job>trans.. +server's low-rate)
thats all from me, good luck!
Hiding your actual skills, require even higher level of skill to make it done.

Another one of those, who want's to open a new standard server without any solid plans.
wonderful  /swt

If you do not want to waste much effort, don't even bother to open.
Just let it rest and don't waste time. It is way too much hassle for an old game with less and less population.
If you just want to play a bit around with your own server, that's fine. But don't expect to get big anytime, and I think you'll close up some weeks later due lack of interest from your own part.

Otherwise:

Get a discord channel

Make some marketing before you start.

Do something different. Vanilla won't do anymore. And vanilla suxx

you won't make many friends with "no job changer","no autoloot" or similar things. People are used to comfort. Give them comfort, but by your own rules.

Try to get android support.

Get correct GM/s & Admins to help you. Make them clear Rules to follow up. Think about what is important and think about what is better to decide per case. State the rules clearly for everyone to see.

Think about the endgame before you start. WoE on low rate servers even with medium population just suxx. People with no endgame get bored quickly and leave.

keep your cool - RO lowlifes, who think everything they say is the holy grail will come to troll. This self claimed "RO elite" will b**** about everything that isn't 100% to their liking. They will b**** and sabotage around until you ban them (then they will create threads here). Ban them as soon as possible, so this chapter is over and done with.

Do not start a low rate server with an exp event. If you start a low rate server, then let it be low rate.

Think about events, other events than the uncreative auto-events. They are the same everywhere, they just suxx

What things should be buyable, what things should get farmed? Woe Stuff? BG Equip? etc.

Think about autoloot and the zeny inflation. Adjust some loots. Think about ways to waste zeny. The economy will be thankful (if there is any)

The cash shop is the cash shop - you'll have it everywhere, and you'll have people everywhere who will quarrel about what you put in. Everyone is different, everyone wants something different. Be clear what you want, or the people will stomp all over you with their "right choice of items"

ah and again: don't do vanilla. Vanilla just suxx. Get creative and develop something new.

yennar pretty much summed up some of my thoughts.

The biggest question I almost never see answered with these types of posts is: why are you making the server?

There's always a list of rates, available pre-made NPCs, commands, etc. but never an explanation of "why." Hate to be such a downer, but if your answer to "why" is what you said in the OP of "recently I've had an interest of getting back into it," then your server is dead from the start.

Here's a list of reasons for making a server that guarantees it will be closed in 1-2 months:

  • I felt like it / thought it would be fun / or any variation of "just because."
  • It's an easy source of side-income. (no one will admit this is their reason out loud)
  • I want to unite all players / I want a high population server.
  • I saw a cool src mod or script on rAthena and want to base a server around it.
  • I like <insert other anime or game>, and thought an RO server with that theme would be cool.
You seem to fall under reason 1, which in that case, please don't open another server.

In order to make a respectable server you'll need a solid reason for doing so: a passion. Maybe you have an idea for some never-heard-of features that would make the game more exciting and the coding capabilities to make it happen. Maybe you want to be the most up-to-date server (though NovaRO already filled that void). Maybe your passion is a particular episode and you have some unique ideas to enhance it. Either way, you'll first need to find your passion and have a solid answer for why you're making the server.

As yennar said above, PreRE vanilla has been beat to death. Understand that your only audience are players who have been playing the game for years and years. They've already experienced RO over-and-over. They will tire of the same old thing quickly. Unless you have something innovative, and not just some copy-paste scripts from rAthena's boards, you'll just be wasting your time and anyone's time who decides to join.

Satos

Both the above guys are pretty solid in what to do/expect.

I'm a PreRE fan, but if it's lacking in the job changer and autoloot, it's not going to go anywhere.

My biggest pet peev is end game, more specifically WoE.
I've got a thread out there somewhere on the importance of a strong FULL WoE, that hasn't been localized to 1 or 2 castles, to artificially stimulate fast paced combat.  Half of WoE is looong term strategy and alliances....ALL focused around the creation of God Items.
No one's going to want to stay at a server long term, if the only thing they are fighting for is bragging rights for a week.

I think there's need for a good, stable PreRE server right now.
But I agree, you'll need a clearly defined and communicated plan, before you launch.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.  I hope you've got the magic touch. ^_^

Nazrem

No this isn't another "who wants to open a server without a plan" this is more of a "I wonder what people think before I even start making a server so I don't waste my time" kind of thing. I know what to expect with a sever I owned a pretty decent one 12 years ago and have GM'd on quite a few. Trust me I know what I'm getting into. I'm more lookin for input on what the current players are after minus a bunch of overpowered / ugly custom items. So far I love most of the input and I have been given a few things to think about wile I'm deciding whether I'm going to make it or not.

People go on official servers and play without a complaint about not having job changers or autoloot, but they come to private servers expecting these features to be enabled at default.
And this is why today's private servers are not unique. Every server has this basic 'must have' list of commands or scripts, and no one gives a f*** about uniqueness anymore.

- like Healer is a must oh, and make sure its FREE.
- can't breath without autoloot, that is a no f***ing no no
- job changer and etc

If people are this lazy to play ro they should stop playing ro. It is a game, and people should not expect the same routine to be followed in every damn server just because it is a private server.

RMS NEEDS A MAKEOVER!

nuicar

What was the server you were involved with back in the day if you don't mind me asking. Your name sounds familiar and I wonder if you were the admin of the first server I joined.

Nazrem

Quite a few nuicar, what was your first server?... I played on the original projectRO, DerRO, EndlessRO, AeRO and a few others. The first server I owned was YumeRO and that was like 12 years ago.

What those guys said is true. The fact you made this thread is already a red flag. If you want to make a server you need an extreme passion. You need to be a pro marketer more than anything. What you are doing right now is marketing and it's bad.

You need to be prepared to dedicate years of your life to your project. You must understand that since you are a newbie, you haven't made the mistakes all the the other server owners made. That will be the biggest fantasy destroyer. All those servers out there already have admins who made the same mistakes everyone makes, but they made them years ago. Without somebody to guide you you will spend 1-2 years making those mistakes.

For example, a common mistake all server owners make is bad dev process. Have you even consider this? You just gonna make spaghetti code? How about your target audience? Who they?? And waht are ur goals? Open server without a healer? What is this? It's just a gimmick. It's not content. It's not community. You are just doing things. Not creating brand loyalty. You are just making a server without autoloot and a warper.

ur server should be an innovation. If you already thinking about this stuff

ur just a generic ro server?? have u actually played the good servers? they are all unique because they have depth. not in their gameplay, not in their gimmicks, but they all create brand loyalty in certain ways. Go check out any of their listings, there are more to those servers than just some words. and the type of customers who play server based on their listing are the worst and you dont want them. noob.

Nazrem

Again... Yuzo I'm not a "newbie"... and this isn't marketing... It's a simple questions to see what the current players are interested in before I even start anything. If you would have read my previous post you would have seen that I ran a server for a number of years, have GM'd on quite a few, and been actively playing since 2005 ish. Hell I've been around longer than RMS... Stop assuming I'm new to this.

Include this and you got yourself 1 loyal player.
