It maybe is good in some cases and bad in others, but it's still a shame & a failure for the owner.

Shame = He doesn't know what he's doing/unable to solve the problem/problem caused by his actions
All I know , wiping will cause the players to leave. But soon they will come back to check it out.

I thought a server would make at least a backup of important things like that, and old server I played made a once-a-week backup, and it was even announced like:

I think you should change servers aso, if a GM allowed corruption to happen and then later decides to wipe i wouldn't bother to stay there.
