What's your opinion? Personally, I think most donation stuff (item/VIP) might affect the game somehow. That's the reason I quit official servers, so I spent a lot of time looking for a low rate server without that kind of stuff. Found 4, 2 closed.
I wonder why people don't even join them. So few share my opinion?

Signify

I would say that most people are aware such servers, as you noted, generally close in a short period of time. The funding to run the server has to come from somewhere, and often donation systems with no insentives won't yeild much money.

I second what Signify said. For those who don't need donations, most of the time, they host it from their computers which end up in problems like lags and instability. They may also worsen their computer (overheat and such) and have to give up hosting. For those who manage the server by paying themselves for the hosting, they may meet financial issues and have to stop paying (no donations allowed, so they can't really start asking for some as it goes against their server's ideals). For those who can continue to pay, good for them XD.
So yeah, donation systems are mostly needed for those who can't pay for the hosting themselves. That's where the balance problem lies; however, players would know that the servers are more likely to not encounter hosting problems with donations backing up to pay for the costs.

Because no-donation servers are:
a) low-rate, and that is unpopular
b) just like 99% of RO servers made by teenagers who just have a bit of money saved but without any steady income
c) too expensive for the owner to advertise everywhere

Personally I'm fine with donation items as long as they can also be obtained normally by playing the game, or if they're consumables which only make the leveling a bit easier(battle manuals, insurances, buff scrolls, and so on)

Mathy

ArchaicRO is stable, doesn't lag and the developer is great. That must be an exception, then.
I wonder why low-rates are so unpopular. Are mid-rates also < high rates?

DeePee

Because RO is old and people are lazy. Plus too many fail servers that can't even stay up for a year. People losing their stuff is most painful on LRs.

Mathy

Yeah, after you've done it 5+ times it sure gets boring, but I doubt the HIGH rate severs' population is made of those experienced people. They usually move to mid-rates, where 99/70 is kept.

Orange

Personally I think a server SHOULD have donations, just not game breaking

RO is old, funding a server for a year really isn't worth it when you could get help funding it which would also make having ads and maybe even a ventrilo and such running.
