So I'm going to try to make a thread where you post something that you think kills a server. I'll start....
One major thing is what I like to call "Server-Hoppers" or guilds/groups of people that join a fairly new server with great potential, and totally screw things up like( i.e. A certain guild that has to do with long lasting pain on a certain part of the body not in the front  /ho ), hoarding MVPs to control/kill the market.

Now someone else give it a go! What really grinds your gears, what kills your fresh server that you worked so hard to create or level in?

Roda Frog of Sakray

Bad community that has to have it their way or else....no matter how unreasonable the request is. Then  can't seem to see what progress is being made and quickly declares the server s*** and says that the WoE sucks......even though that would more or less mean that THEY suck since all but one guild involved is saying that.....(and to top it off the WoE didn't really suck O.o....if they wanted more GvG they could have just agreed to it since EVERYONE WANTED IT.....). <----sums up how StandardRO more or less died, though technically the server is still up........with no players. :X
Triper is really awesome! For real!

Chemical Crush

Corrupt Staff.
Staff who don't know what they're doing.
Awful community.

Playtester

There are only really two things that kill a server, it's always one of the two (or both). Either community or staff.

Community:
- server hoppers as mentioned above
- players quitting RO altogether (they grow up, get children, ..., or even a job)
- players quitting because other players did quit
- players quitting because the population became too low
- players quitting because someone posted on forums "server is dying"
- players not willing to join a server that is already 3 months or older
- players not willing to join a server that doesn't already have a huge population

Staff:
- corruption
- inactivity
- server owner simply lost motivation hosting a RO server
- server owner realizes how much work hosting a RO server is and that he doesn't have time for this
- server owner has something really dramatic happening in real life and disappears from the internet (and might actually be dead)
- server owner thought he will have 1000+ players with his awesome server concept but then sees that he really only has 20

Kensei

People who open server just because they think running RO server is fast cash

Playtester

True, I totally forgot about those. I don't really get how they can make quick money with a RO server, though.

Meta

It's hard to say. Ragnarok Frontier went through every single thing that you could list as being a potential server killer over the last ten years, and it was still doing well up until about six months ago. Right now, it looks like attrition will end it.

I'm going to go with impatience or lack of involvement by the server's staff, or a slow decline until the server can't sustain itself. A server can endure anything if the staff is willing to work through it, and as long as the replacement rate is positive.

Triper

I would say that it's money. Everything ends on it soon or later.

This surely belongs to the server discussion section, *move topic*.

Other than the usual corrupt staff, gm/admin plays "legit" that isnt' really legit, I think no one mentioned balance issue yet?  Have heard a lot of those "all the big guilds left the server and the server goes downhill from there".  Those should be related to server staff not doing enough when the problem start that drive people away.

Also, can GTB card kill servers?

STUPID events kill servers every day:

"Race to 99!!"

Why would you reward the person with the most time ?!?!

Aren't they gonna get geared up first and 99/70 regardless during the next couple days?

It's a priest race anyway.

"Get the right /Dice and win Lord Kaho Horns!"
On a 3/3/3 server.... yes...

"I'll just summon a valk over here a couple times, i think your guild can kill it"
Yes we can, they are dead, thanks for the free loots. What about the other guilds?

"I'll summon ten thousand porings on a field that spawns porings of every type, and i'll drop a few ocas then i'll go AFK, HAPPY HUNTING!"
Dude, ITS A LOW RATE!! WHY OCAS!! it's the first day of the server and you want your 5 online players to chase down them porings for 20 hours; what if one guy got the ocas and disconnected already?

"Opening Weekend!! 10x more EXP!!" (on 5x or less low rates)
Why do you reward the people that come  into your server first by completely destroying the purpose of your low rate!
Understand this: It breaks the balance! After the week ends and new people wanna come in they will feel discouraged to join your server.
Why not give him a gift? a hat that doesn't have stupid stats? Frog King hat? Dude!! THink about Everyone when you make ANY event! Think about the future of your damn server ffs!

Among MANY OTHER RETARDED AND STUPID EVENTS THAT KEEP ON HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ON EVERY DAMN SERVER
sometimes i wonder if the average iq of every server admin/staff is below downsyndrome...

Other honorable mentions that kill servers:

  • OVERPOWERED donation items

  • Teenage troll server hopper community

  • Douchebag guilds

  • Non existant GM staff. Just the admin.

  • Stupid commands.

  • HEALERS ON LOWRATES (THIS!!)

  • Warpers to EVERYWHERE on LOWRATES

  • Admins  that modify skills to "balance s*** up" ya right, let's put insta cast and let let edp go up to lvl 20, cause sonic blow has "way too much aftercast anyway to be threatening to any guild" Dude, as if it was the only thing you could do while EDPd

I can't say that for sure that server hoppers DON'T kill servers, but a few of them aren't trolls. I'm a server hopper myself, but I have fun, and I interact pretty well with whatever server I'm on. I've never had any issue with players on the servers I've played at. Now, I DO get competitive sometimes, but I don't get like that unless the feeling's mutual, and NEVER to the point of calling anyone names, complaining about them, or anything like that.  /heh It's usually my personal issues at home that have me leave servers, and going to other servers. It's all perspective, pretty much.

But in what kills servers, pretty much everything from the staff who either isn't very active (or don't care about the server), to the community being a prick with the "my way or the highway" attitude. Pretty much what everyone's been saying the entire time

Woon

DDOS wont kill it, but it will make or break the server community and staff.

RoseTea

Splitting a server.  I have never seen "We're making a second server" work out well.  The best-case situation is half your community moves over to the newly-formed one and you have two stagnant communities.  Worst case the entire thing collapses.
