In playing ragnarok online, sometimes a GM plays unfair, for instance give support to their friends, ban people who argue with him or their friends, etc. The most important thing is how to develop management skill as a GM in RO. Please share experiences to manage a Ragnarok Private Server to be successful to maintain the game balance and fair.  /no1

Based on your description those people should not be called GM. GM should be objective doesn't give biased treatment to specific players. I dont really agree to treat GM as a friend. When GM being GM, they should play their role as a GM should be. If you find a server with those biased GM I suggest you to leave that server as soon as possible. I have bad experience in the past, my hardwork is useless and goes to waste because of those kind of GMs.

Bakorzero pretty much nailed it on the head. A GM's job is to be neutral in all circumstances. If they can't be, they don't deserve to be in power.

Players want from GMs many different things. Content-wise, it's up to the GMs to be able to differentiate the best course of action for a server from the actions that seem good at first, but might harm or hinder the server and the community down the road.

In terms of treatment of other players, the two above posts cover it well. It's not easy being faced with the option to punish someone you know or are friends with, but that's where you can tell who can GM properly.

People don't know what they want from a GM. To list it simply...

Things people want from a GM:

- Socially Relatable
- Advanced Game Knowledge
- Hard Working
- Pure of Heart
- Available at any time
- Original and Eventful
- Highly Intelligent
- Professionalism(whatever that means)
- Charismatic mannerisms
- Appealing Personality
- Transparent
- Respectful
- Just
- Fair
- Funny
- Empathy

What a GM actually needs to have to be qualified:

- Advanced Game Knowledge
- Hard Working
- Pure of Heart

What the people demanding these things have:

-

KickStart

As someone who has done the job -

  • Professionalism
Unbiased and ready to cut ties with players if needed
    Available during set scheduled hours
    Love of the game
    Knowledge of the game
PR skills and able to defuse a situation
Firm response with rulebreaking, but fair.
    Non-volatile personality

These define a good GM. Someone who can do their job and act like a GM, not show favoritism, and remain dedicated to the players on the server as opposed to themselves.
