What about a good, old-fashioned wipe of one's Item DB and then tightening up one's security???
From Alexander the grammarian; To refrain from fault-finding, and not in a reproachful way to chide those who uttered any barbarous or solecistic or strange-sounding expression; but dexterously to introduce the very expression which ought to have been used, and in the way of answer or giving confirmation, or joining in an inquiry about the thing itself, not about the word, or by some other fit suggestion.

Oh dear. Whatever happened to backups?! Surely you could at least restore it to a point before everything went to shit and fix your issues.
Thing is, our backups are inside the server files and the HACKER deleted everything and restored it like 10 days before. ;D

The chances of 10 days worth of recovery are WAY higher than the chances of a full-on wipe!! I'm not even trying to sound condescending when I say that I really think you guys should rethink this, if you had a good thing going, why throw it away? Patch your security holes, pick yourselves up off the floor and get to it.

There's been too many good servers dying these days due to this nonsense. Seriously, don't let one asshole ruin it.
To right the countless wrongs of our day, we shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise. What a wonderful world such would be...

Well, as part of the staff, most of us would like to continue it. However as I've said we cannot do anything else since decisions were final. 3 months is so short for it to be closed - /sob. But yeah the hacker was a professional and we do not know whatever might happen if ever. But yeah glad to be part of VastRO. :D

Wait...you left the key to the safe ON TOP OF IT?

Also, do you have any clue to the identity of the hacker? Surely there must be some sort of raw logs or something.

Backups are usually done seperate from the server files. If this is the case, then they HAD to have logged into your server's FTP. Thus, leaving their IP when displayed as last logged in.

Also, I don't like your little smiley face at the end of your post: if your server just got hacked and you decided to give up, I don't think that's something to smile about.

We were able to track it (before it was rolled back to 10 days). According to the Admins logs were also deleted, as I've said we do not know how he did it. --> I believe everything to access the server files has been changed, but it was still hacked.

Sorry for the misinterpretation, but do you want me to show that I'm sad? We are furious, devastated of this unexpected "shut down". 3 months is really short and we have a lot of plans for the server at least as per Nithalm's post we were trying to create our own episode of Ragnarok. Note: I am not the admin, I'm just one of the staffs and we didn't give up - we're just out of options...

I agree with Descent. You really should reconsider and keep it running. By closing you are just showing the hackers that they are getting what they want.

I agree with this, there's been a ridiculous amount of servers dropping in recent days, all due to a single hacker or two.  I'd heard VastRO had quite a bit of potential, it'd be a shame to see you guys give up so soon after this one incident.  Sure a lengthy rollback or even a wipe would suck, but it's better than completely closing down, right?

Why not simply do some research into what went wrong, patch up your security, then try again?  It just seems way too soon to give up on what could've been a potentially good server, especially with all the work/plans you had for it.

Yeah, it looks the admin has made a great press release: an account suspended message is a great ending message.

Talk to the host: any decent host has logs of who and what logged in to your account that are not removable by a root user. I know this because I logged in from a friends house to fix a few things, came home, logged in, and didn't connect the dots that it was my friends IP. Talked to Support, told me that they had known the password (and then I realized, based on the last login time "OHH!! Herp a derp, nevermind."). I mean, and this is a small example; just ask Flippy, his server is hosted by Frantech (which is probably a cheaper type of hosting than Vast had) and he had tons of raw logs.

Then, go up and file a complaint with the ISP. Like Cyric said, your only making Vast look worse by giving up. If necessary, I can help try to patch any security holes if you guys want to request my help.

(Offtopic) Also notice how all the haters are hating on VastRO's RMS listing right now? It's gotten like 30 reviews in the timespan of this topic. Quick! Someone call Trigun! It might be his army!

I do not know how to answer these questions. Majority of the players wanted a WIPE rather than the roll back. According to those people who "searched" for the problem, we really do not know what really happened. First, we found an account that had MvP cards - all accounts were banned. Second, had  a GM meeting right away (Troubleshoot - server access passwords has been changed), after few minutes, we found out that the server has been roll'd back to 10 days before. And we're just really out of option, administrators gave up. I will tell you that we really worked hard for the server and we are really saddened that this happened. But oh well, life must go on.

I couldn't answer the other suggestions, I am no admin. Yes, I've noticed that when the server was put down, all haters went to our RMS page and tried to put us down, where we are already down...

The Administrators doesn't. :(

adhelle

that is a quick lesson that making a copy of the sql database inside the server is not the same as backing up =/
my condolences to vast players

Sniggers

I can't imagine how Cain and Royale have to feel making this decision.  There can be no joy in having to tell your staff and community that you have failed them.  That you have permanently shut down the server.

From the conversations that I had with Admin earlier they did not feel they could have Vast-RO as a secure place.  Without their knowing that things had been completely fixed and their feeling confident that the same thing would not, could not happen again, they have decided to not bring Vast-RO back.

Yes we had back ups, yes, they did the right things - but still $#!+ happens...  It was not for lack of trying nor good intentions on the part of our entire staff.

At one point Cain, jokingly i am sure, told me that if I wanted to try to fix it go ahead.  Had to be a joke, he knows I dont know $@!+ about server stuff...  I want our community to know if there was anyway that the rest of the staff could make this work we would.  We have to have the Admin(s) with us and for them it is not a posibility.

Who knows maybe if we cry enough Cain will try again?

Thanks for the fun.  Mommy (Pam)

Cain stated he will not give donation money back. He invested in some hardware, but also in advertisement.
One of these advertisements is even on the 'home' page of ratemyserver.net. I believe those are not cheap.
Cain actually talked to me about it, that he barely got his investment back. He didn't had the chance to start earning.(but i think he was close to it...)

Well, about donations, i cannot help you. Still a shame, it is why 'private servers' have a bad name. But doing a 'donation' is always a risk...

I don't believe that the high amount of money of a good populated and donated server went into ads and server hardware only.

Dude get over it, they are called donations. Do you ever donate to a charity..and go ask for it back? no. If you donated intending to get your money then you should have never donated to begin with.

Cheers
Actually it's "Cash Shop" that has "Donation" written over it to cover the real intention of it

So true...

just throwing this out there
