To all former GenerationRO players
« on: Jun 18, 2009, 10:48 pm »
Hello all,

Yesterday we had some bad news concerning the server. Our Admin had been away from the server, supposedly due to some serious personal problems (*shrug* cliché?). The server continued to work normally until one night, it just went down. It started with the server's site and a few hours later, the whole thing was down.
After various efforts to contact our admin and to find out why the server was down, we finally decided to contact the company hosting the server. Fortunately, they were kind enough to give us the bad news: the server hosting was canceled and all data was completely erased.
We haven't been given any warning or reason for this. One day the server was up and running, the next it was gone without any explanation. The Gm's themselves don't know why our admin did this.

After the initial disbelief and shock, some of us started looking for a new server and we found CobaltBlueRO. Some of us have already moved there and we hope that more of you will join us there in the future.

RIP GenerationRO:'(

Hope to see you guys at Cobalt.

How are serious personal problems "cliché"?
It's rare that I come to RMS anymore. I won't see any messages you leave me here.

I think it's stupid, and a little sad that the admin did this.

Atleast you found another server, and hey, perhaps the gm's can make their own server where you don't have to worry about the hosting/everything going down.

How are serious personal problems "cliché"?

Great work on sticking to the topic there.  Real comforting of you.

"Real comforting of you"? I don't recall Ilphithra asking for pity. Why would I try to console someone whose server went down if they've already found a replacement?

I wasn't aware it was off-topic to ask OP to elaborate on something s/he said in the post, though. Ya learn something new every day.

How are serious personal problems "cliché"?

I guess that it's just often used as the reason to the point that it's hard to believe if it's really the reason or not. More than likely, in the eyes of players, people see "personal problems IRL" as mere excuses to cover up any mess ups, laziness and other types of negative reasons why a GM disappears/retires. (Plus you can sort of tell that from the connotation of the OP that the OP isn't accepting that as the reason very well at all)

._. that was not very professional of the admin. To just pull the plug without even announcing it first @_@ From the looks of it, it is not like someone else had to force an erasure (or else things would have gone down after the admin failed to pay the bills), so it definitely looks like someone pulled the plug, but didn't bother to inform others on the reasons behind this.

In any case, we don't know what happened, but the current facts don't really paint a good image on the admin ._.'

The fact is, we only know what the server host told us and our own guesses as to why the admin vanished suddenly. We contacted the server host and they opened a service ticket to try and contact our admin. Some time later in the day, one of us got an email saying that the admin had pulled the plug on the server and submitted "personal issues" as a reason to do so (so, we don't really know what happened). We had no warnings, no announcements, no reasons given. The server was being paid for, the plug was simply pulled suddenly and without any kind of warning to the community.  :-\

A few things to say since I used to be a former GenerationRO player.

First and foremost, there seems to be some data left considering that at the very least the web server is still up. You can even access the forums although you can't log into it. Reason being? This IP right here. The sclientinfo even pointed to generation-ro.net.

http://85.17.170.196/ and http://85.17.170.196/forum which both work. The forums are lacking a format though everything is accessable within the forum without logging in.

You can even connect to http://85.17.170.196/cp and log in. Funny thing is though, on the server status it says that everything is up with 60 players which makes it very easy to assume that this entire time, the head GM nicknamed Lynxx, had fake users since a GM that I knew personally could not find where there mysterious 60+ players were overnight when all of the maps were empty. So while the a lower level GM who was in our guild and the 5 of us were on overnight and saw 60ish players surprised at how many people were on and after bot hunting on every map including fields and dungeons we probably were the only actual ones on the server late night with the mysterious 60 players hiding somewhere.

I did tried using the IP on the sclientinfo instead of the original url but it did not work unfortunately.

---

Lynxx was also very inactive for a head GM who didn't give access to scripts to any other GM. There was also no way of telling when he would log in in case any issues had to be brought up. It seemed very disorganized and I'd say some of the GMs were left clueless on what had to be done at certain times defaulting to, "Gotta wait till Lynxx comes back." This trend seems to be common considering that I read a post on RMS a few days ago concerning inactive server owners. It's quite a shame. In the end, I advise that any affiliation with Lynxx and private server be taken with a considerable doubt at its future stability. In the end, there's always a way to make contact to someone about anything. A simple email informing his own GM team that he was shutting down the server would've sufficed. Instead he left without a clue leaving several people upset and his reputation behind which was why GenerationRO took off with the people that it did in the first place.

I've read the Global Rules and the Server Discussion guideline and saw nothing in terms of double-posting. Bumping this out of necessity. I apologize if I did violate a rule and would ask for a mod to take care of this accordingly

Seems like there is an update in light of the GenerationRO server going down.

According to the first post of this thread, a person I knew from the server not in my guild and a fellow guildie, a GM contacted the host and was told it was cancelled. Despite this, I've shown the IP still works. My guildie told me that his friend spoke with a former "Event GM" and then promoted to "Adminstrator" named Cere. According to him, she contacted the host and mentioned a key fact that all the data was erased. My friend also saw a pasted conversation from another GM named Yukimora which said the same thing but did not mention Cere contacting the host.

Now, the most interesting bit of this is this picture if you examine the date.

So Cere says that the host was cancelled and data was deleted. Somehow, you can connect through everything with this IP somewhat and the server status says that all the servers are up. Not to mention, this person managed to get in. Interesting.

I give my regards to Lynxx for lack of notification on his status and for his inactivity and regards to Cere and Yukimora for also not being clear and possibly lying to EVERYONE about this by saying a host was cancelled and that all data was erased when it is there in plain sight. Even my characters and my accounts are there with all their items. Sounds like deletion to me.

You're still missing the guy who is paying for said server.

That guy is GM-Lynxx.

Unless I misunderstood your point or something.

Tigre, you were a troll on the forums and trying to be troll here. The info came straight from Leaseweb themselves so you can quit your crap.
I was one of the people contacting Leaseweb after I got these news and got the same answer from them. Server is dead even if there's "remnants" that Leaseweb hasn't disposed of yet. Contact them if you want and you'll see the answer you get.

Warning about tigre: he's a forum troll, be aware of this person.

This thread has served its purpose, I request it to be closed before some other people decide to come here and turn this into a soap-opera.
