Require some feedback about legal issues
« on: Oct 13, 2016, 02:00 AM »
Hi, I am one of two GMs at my own private servers, Gaia Ragnarok Online(Malaysia) & Gaia Renewal Ragnarok Online(Malaysia).

Gaia Ragnarok Online (Pre-Renewal)

Gaia Renewal Ragnarok Online (Renewal)

Overnight, the Facebook page for our pre-renewal server got taken down due to a copyright claim made by Gravity Co., Ltd., Electronics Extreme Co., Ltd. We got targeted right after we advertised our server details on RMS Forum. Coincidence? Maybe...

I am aware that private servers are illegal but I didn't think that Gravity is still targeting private servers. My question is how are there so many other servers with a lot players still up while GaiaRO only having around 200+ active players getting acted on? I am curious about servers like TalonRO (Apologies for the name mention, but I am really curious).

Is it possible for me to reclaim our Facebook Page? Probably not but are there any other private server owners who went through similar experiences? Your feedback is appreciated.

Most of this "C&D" stuff is actually fake and not by Gravity at all. But Gravity did act in some cases. It can depend on the region you're in. I know that when euRO still existed, it was basically impossible to host a RO server in Germany because the German publisher acted like immediately. Not sure how it is now, though.
Also it depends on what you are actually offering. The only illegal acts you are actually doing is sending out a modified client and using official graphics or trademarked words. So if that wouldn't happen on the facebook page, I'd assume it could be considered legal itself.

Would also be interested what TalonRO staff says about that. I'd expect them to having gotten plenty of (fake) C&D letters and attempts to block them by now!

There's no way to reclaim access to your Facebook page unless the staff of RO EXE lifts it and I am sure they've reported TalonRO but their page has been running for many years and there's no "Ragnarok" on their Facebook page name. Also, I believe RO EXE is only targeting servers in Asia.

We usually just ignore them, haha. But they've popped up through the years, indeed.

Like mentioned in some of the other replies, it's probably a regional thing. As the game is still quite popular in Asia, I can imagine them being stricter when it comes to private servers hosted in or targeting their area.

I've also noticed that most the blocked Facebook pages contains the word "Ragnarok" on their page title. I've immediately renamed mine after knowing.

NovaRO should rename their page title asap.
