Hi, I've been around mostly, though not that active in the community and lost my old account, I don't know if this is a rant or what but does anybody feel the same?

well anyways, here it goes..

Private Servers are popping around from time to time, from some dudes who just want to make a server, and handling out "freebies" just for the players to play, though its not a bad thing too, creating servers without a long term plan that just goes with the flow and shutting them down when they feel like they want to, there are now a few servers that have the quality and are well planned. we all know that running a community is not that easy, having a stable community is not that easy.
Most of the time players are now asking for the freebies and will not play yours if you won't hand out freebies, they'll most likely want to be spoonfed, but where is the fun in that? Most of the Time, Server Owners with that kind of server, though not all of them, are corrupt, handing out equipments and stuff to those they know. Yes, everybody knows that the server owners want their community to enjoy the game thats why they are handing out those incentives.

just some random thoughts about the private server scene.

* i hope i posted this on the right section though.

It's the common "long-life low population" vs "short-life high population" issue. Basically it already starts at rates. Low rates, server survives much longer, higher rates, more players might join because it's cooler to be max level faster, but server won't last long. Same is with giving new players freebies.

Honestly I never understood why mid-rate servers exist, because either it should take at least a year to reach max level (long server life) or you might as well just let all players start at max level (nice for those who only wanna do endgame anyway, why force them to grind?).

Corrupt GMs is more an issue of servers than having to do with freebies though. It's hard to tell. There is often competent staff, but the server doesn't have much population, but that doesn't mean that if the population is higher the GMs must be corrupt.

From what I experience, only HR / SHR give freebies and I feel those are servers where people mostly stick around to pvp or play events not for hunting.

Then if you think about it, if every player gets a set of freebie it make everybody equal initially (such as a freebie npc that give them out).

Yes it could be a way to attract players, though I doubt it's effect if there's any.  Who would join a server because there's freebie?  Not me lol, I don't care for the freebie if your server suck.  It's something "a nice to start but not a must have".  Maybe it's a way for servers to "impress" players by showing what kind of customs they have on the server.

In my experience from being an admin, I've had people ask me for some type of special event more often than freebies.  Which is fine, because I made sure everyone could join the events.

I actually rarely had people begging for free stuff, I can only remember one player doing so.  He joined and asked for a hat, I told him it was in a quest, and he was like "but quests are too hard I need the hat or I can't play" even though the quest was actually pretty easy and could be done in under 20 mins.  He kept begging for the hat for like 15 mins so I told him to quit. lol.

Well having quality players will give you the longest time to wait for them. What do i mean? You will wait for them to come in.

Well i saw many servers too like that. They will give instant items to the players and what happened? INSTANT SERVER CLOSE :D
