Is it possible to get 1,000 players in one server?

I used to run a server with two buddies of mine... when we were like 15... LOL. It was called "LittleRO".

The problem was that although it was very big, we were a bit naive. In the end, we ended up getting our server hijacked by some douche. It would be nice to open another nicely touched server, but nowadays the RO scene is small, right? Would it even be possible to get around 1,000 unique players in this day and time?

Triper

I would say that no but that's because the big servers around the ro scenery are already established well enough but everything is possible. If you make a good server that goes into what is missing on this ro scenery and you know how to handle and fix everything, you may get it to the 1000+ players after a while.

Also, those "established big server" ^ population is 1000+, so yes, it's possible.

KeplerBR

Ever met brazilian servers who had more than 1000 on

I hightly doubt so. Even the most promising servers that are highly promoted here, won't catch above 300 players anymore. All the servers with 1000+ have the huge advantage that they got so many donations that they could invest a lot to improve the server. It's hard for others to catch up.

Just stay focus on what is right, if you keep advertising and helping your players in-game you will reach your target players.

Make your players think that you are not a "money grabbing admin".

Well... TalonRO has over 1000 consistently but they are pretty much first place on the list. Which makes it pretty hard because they have two things over the newer servers -

1. They have tons of players already meaning they'd have a better chance at attracting new players because of their numbers being so inviting. Would you wanna join a server with 100 players or 1000 players? It's more often than not, the latter decision for most people.

2. They obviously generate way more money at this point so it's easier for them to maintain it.

That was not always the case though. TalonRO has only been like this for the past 1-2 years. We also had a point where we had a population as low as 15. Just takes perseverance to push through :)

A small example from our Player Peak (including vendors, mostly during WoE) topic:
- 85 (September 2008)
- 113 (December 2008)
- 125 (April 2009)
- 307 (October 2010)
- 390 (December 2010)
- 534 (March 2011)
- 653 (June 2011)

Started to further increase slowly over the years.

If you're server is good, yes.
It will take a while though.

For the first 1-2 years you only have 15 players?

@DeePee

What you do then for your server to improve?

The possibility of having 1000 'concurrent' players is trivial.

You should be more concern about how to scale your server to meet the demand, which involves analyzing data and making optimizations in source code, hardware, network, and databases.

Usually for hardware and network, you'll just have to pay for more resources, but if you don't want to waste money, then you'll probably want to find the most optimal configuration. However for source code and database, this mean you'll have to do some trimming, purging, and cleaning to retain performance and memory.

Don't aspire for more players if you have neither money nor experience.

In our case we focused more on PvM. Offer stability. A place where people know they can come back to after some time and all their stuff is still there. Nothing's worse for a server than a wipe or a rollback.
