gm bias is the new white
« on: Sep 16, 2017, 07:05 AM »
everyone always hates you for being biased JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE BIASED, it's absolutely ridiculous. they clearly lack any fundamental understanding, and it's almost as bad as people of color hating on white people just because they're white. like, you can't expect me to shoulder the responsibilities of my ancestors. i had no influence or control on their decisions and it's ridiculous to try or even want to inherit something like that which has nothing to do with me or you. as a biased person myself, i am the victim of circumstance, because if people weren't so ugly i wouldn't have to treat them like ugly people. it's not my fault!!

all of this truly holds down ragnarok servers as a whole and suppresses their community's ability to donate money and grind equipment, so i think it's time we stop this whole "being biased is bad" stigma. biased people run the world, and we have to embrace it

I don't know man.  I see where you're coming from, and I agree, people will need to tolerate some level of bias, because that's just how life is.
But on the flip side, I can understand why people get so frustrated at "gm bias", when it starts affecting gameplay.

When I first crossed into private servers years ago, the first server I played on (and still my favorite oddly enough) had a small community of around 40-50 active people (real people, not online characters).  It was a very close knit community.  We had all largely come to know each other in real life through this server.  and I still have telephone numbers and Skype info for about 20 of them.  I met several of them in real life.  Dated one of them for a couple of years.  Helped another one with his business.  Rejoiced when one of the GMs had his first child.  Celebrated when one player from Greece and one player from Italy got married to each other in real life.
I've stayed friends with half a dozen of them through the years, despite living in different countries; and feel comfortable that we could call each other if something happened and we needed something from each other.

The 3 GMs all played on regular characters along side us, and only really logged onto their GM characters for events and special things like that.
The 2 main guilds on the server were headed by 2 of the GM's.  It didn't seem strange or out of place at the time.  We had all become friends.

I say all that to set up the GM bias discussion.

My guild master was a very professional GM, that valued his integrity and image over likability.
We'd be hunting stuff for days/weeks, and we'd get no special favors from him.  Trying to make a +7 Infiltrator [1] took us an eternity.  In fact, we just finally stopped at a +6 Infiltrator [1].

The other guild's master would regularly "help" his members.
They were the first to get a Hurricane's Fury [1] to drop from Gloom.  Magically, after "replacing" it after it broke a few times, it was a +9 Hurricane's Fury [1] before the end of the day.  That was nice and cool that a GM would be so generous like that.  Everyone was excited to see what a +9 HF could do.  But then it continued.

I was our breaker, and was pretty decent at sneaking past their team.  Next WoE, the entire enemy team had Maya Purple Sunnies. (Sunglasses [1] were easy to quest for.  The Maya Purple cards were a 0.03% drop though.)

We lost the Ice Pick race also.  Neither of us ever did get one to drop from an MVP.  Their guild just magically ended up with 6 of them one week.
That did get asked about, and they'd been a result of modified castle drops that were outside the posted drop rate for that server.

The server eventually dwindled and died after a few years.  The "GM bias" was annoying, but it's not what killed the server.  It's population dropped to around 25 legit people.  The 3 GMs that co-owned the server all ended up having life pull them in different directions, and we had a closing down party on the server.

I do think GM bias will drive people away from a server.  But I think these servers that advertise as having "No GM Bias!" are probably like girls that say "I don't like any drama."  Their the one's that usually cause the most drama.
I think the intentions are probably good.  But the best servers I've experienced have never mentioned anything about GM bias.

Some servers have loose GMs.  Some servers run a tight ship.  It's a mixed bag.

I think rates and economy effect a server's life significantly more than "GM bias". If you've got 125 people on a server and a GM creates items for 2 of those people, most of the server isn't going to know or even be affected by it.  I don't like it happening.  But it's not going to destroy the server.

If you have 100x drop rates, bots, and donations that are better than any other item; I see several people starting out, realizing that they cannot compete with bot farmers or big spenders, and then the population dying out after 2 months.

That seems to be the biggest problem for servers right now.  Much bigger than any "GM bias" anyway.
Large opening population> several donations> players leave> less donations> competition goes stale> no noticeable donations> shut down and restart

So there's my thoughts for the discussion. Cheers!

there will always be bias.

but try to balance it out. as long as the server is leaning towards balance and fairness, i think everything will be fine.

a little help and fun is ok once in a while but make your friends work for it. no freebies. same thing with the community. win win.

i don't understand the "things are like this, accept it" mentality. why is wanting things to be better than they are a bad thing? how else do people make any progress in anything..?

not questioning the fact that all people are biased, though. everyone in the world is, that's why you have a GM team, because their respective biases are supposed to cancel each other out. and hey, having biases and showing bias are two different things.

also... dude. whining about how hard you have it being white is never a good look.

EDIT: on second read i may have just fallen victim to poe's law. eh. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is only my opion. I can say that 5-10% of current running ragnarok server is "BIAS" the reason why because they've lack of knowledge on handling a server feels like they create a server for their own interest[TOO CHILDISH]. To be honest it very easy to make a ragnarok server these days. You can even buy $10 ragnarok hosting. If you think that there is a BIAS on going on the server that you are playing then better get off with it.. And generally you cannot DETERMINE the word BIAS on a white person. anyone can become bias if they want so.

ah, but is it not your bias for humanity which has brought you to not being able to see the person standing right in front of you?

If you talk about bias, then popular players on a server have more influence in making decisions and that's where the bias begins even if a new or ordinary player made a good and rational suggestion.
