Don't be desperate with gimmics, put more quality into your product and you'll flourish

I'm lost... I think it's meant to be a discussion, and he just offered his answer to the original question XD.

Got a story that can be scripted as a RO quest? Or, a variation of other books and movies (like the Zelda and Hunger Games series)? PM me your ideas!

There, now its just a question.  Are you happy?

By the way, you seem to be the only one who has replied to my topic that does not immediately appear to be on the recieving end of RO private server "donation" money.  Congratulations.  I just thought that was interesting trend considering the negativity of the posters and the fact that I run the only donationless non low rate that I know of...  However, I shan't hide the fact that this topic started out as a cheesy advertisement for my server.

Quite, though you supported what I said before anyways... Do I need to be happy? Lol. This kind of question may lead to insultive/drama-related/joking remarks, hence probably why nobody asked this before (even though it probably went on in people's minds before).

You can obviously see from most of the Rant threads here what people do to save a server... or to even promote it.

That is quite the sad assumption.

Just because a server pays for a good host and quality hardware does not mean the Administrative team is corrupt. This may have been true for some servers. The Admin whom I am working for now has a long history of running Ragnarok Servers and actually refunding Donations that were not used when the server was closed or a player was banned off the server before their donation was used to pay server expenses.

Most server admins pay for the first year or so mostly out of pocket so I fail to see why donation items are even brought up unless you are trying to yet again disguise a server advertisement in saying that you do not have Donation Items and such, therefore players who dislike such things should find more information about what servers you may or may not currently run?

I think the fact that I made a server that has no donations shows that I care about it enough to argue about it...  Donations are quite unnecessary to run a server nowadays.  Hosting is really cheap, thus any server with a successful donation program is either still paying the 2005 price for hosting like idiots or they are pocketing cash from it.  I am somewhat baffled as to why players will play on donation servers when there are donation free alternatives.  Btw I did find that getting desparate to save a server doesn't really do any good at all, getting back to the topic at hand.  However, conversations like these make me want to not give up hope.

On the subject of the topic at hand..

I have seen players try very hard to save a server that the admin has decided to close.. some going as far as offering to take the wheel and see what they can do.

I have never personally seen that work on any dying server... even if control was handed over to someone the server still died quite easily.

On the other hand when it comes to a lack of funds I have seen players donate a significant amount of money (back in 2000-2009 era) to keep the server alive.

These days there are many things that Donations pay for such as legit licenses of Harmony and advanced source edits.

I guess the best thing is to advertise as widely as possible.

Play on other servers as well to see what makes them good and see if you can improve the quality of your own server.

I guess there are different types of situations that servers need saved.  From experience, I think that it is better to just burn a server than transfer it to a new administrator.  The situation I was thinking of was a server that cannot meet the required population threshold to keep any players.
