Demand for Retro-like server?

I've seen some Retro (particularly RetRO, actually. And EarlyRO) servers pop up and play out in the past, but they all seem to have ended... badly. I can't quite remember why RetRO died but I do know it never got above 100 average (not much demand for a Retro server?), EarlyRO seems to be getting some incredibly bad reception lately and looks like it's about to die as well, but that's just speculation.

So what's the demand for a Retro server, then? On one hand it seems like many people want one, on another it seems like when a Retro server is up, not many people actually go to play it. More of a curiosity topic than anything, what do you think of a non-trans Retro-like RO server?

The problems in the past were usually servers not really being retro by having modern or custom RO stuff, or using an older SVN which allowed for all the old exploits. I think a pure retro server with capable administration would do well enough to pay for itself and then some. Obviously it wouldn't get hundreds and hundreds of players, but considering the worldmap was a lot smaller back then, 100-200 players would really fill the world up.

Well, depends on what you mean by retro. No trans, no 2-2, pre-comodo... soon pre-renewal will too be "retro"

See I always wanted to see a non trans server and play one.
But there isn't a lot of CONTENT to keep me there.  Once I 99 my non trans what is to keep me there?

Why don't they modify the new dungeons or leave them there anyway for players to experience as non trans?  Modify items to work with classes as needed if its trans only or whatever.

I would rather see the server try to add custom content as much as possible, recreating the game in the sense of playing with a challenge as a non trans, or something.

But non of this is done, and MMO's are games where you need to have new content to keep players interested or players will leave out of boredom of essentially "doing everything."

Getting your trans to 99 is just the same routine all over again, you can hardly call it extra content.

What many people don't realize that in some cases, less is more. In current RO, there's a lot of equipment that is just "the best", making all the other stuff obsolete because Gravity never thought about balancing out the old and the new. Having played both current and classic RO to death, I've always felt like classic had more equipment options and fun yet valid builds to play. One thing I did like about EarlyRO was that they had the modern MVP, and they added somewhat of a challenge, but ultimately pvm is never really hard if you play smart.

RO is about pvp content and the challenge therein anyway and I find that a lot more fun without the instant kill s*** that's so popular nowadays.

I love the game pre-trans. It was so much better =/ Actually, I could live with just BS/Knight/Assassin/Wiz/Hunter/Priest.
I don't mind the new maps, so it's all about knowing what your population wants and what they dislike.

From what I see on aRO pre-trans isn't all the bells and whistles people make it out to be, it is extremely hard to actually drop someone in WoE because the damage outputs are just so low. It becomes a battle of attrition, the side which has more/better pots will win.

The thing is there is a lack of content to explore after a point, and you'll feel you have "beat" the game in essence.  This is true of almost most games, the thing that makes mmo's unique is more content.  This is why many computer games now and days also make expansions if they are popular enough.  It brings new aspects of play to the game.

This is why trans servers remain more popular I think, and even already third class servers get made.  That is why I said that classic servers need to create new content or modify old content that trans normally only have access to in a way that is feasible.  PvM and PvP can each have things created to make things interesting.

I also think there are more interesting builds one can make as a trans since we have more equipments and stat points and skills to try using.  Anyway I hope I have clarified my original post a bit more for you. ^^

Max level above 99 is even worse on classic servers because the damage output doesn't scale up with the HP. It's definitely fine with old equipment and max levels.

You'll never feel like you've "beaten" RO because there'll always be gear to hunt, attempt to +8/+9 (or +10 if it's not that hard to drop) and card combinations to try.
I agree, though, that expansions to the current classes were needed. However, they should've used some better sprites. Crusader sprite>Pally sprite. I also prefer the majestic Sage look over those pimp clothes profs wear. I've seen some pics of how trans sprites should be, maybe I can still find it.

I think he means compare trans and non-trans

SinX gets EDP
WS gets cart term
Sniper gets true sight and stuff
Hwiz gets amp magic power, gan(or whatever 1 removes LP)
None of those classes really get any survivability besides higher HP, which totally doesn't compare. Even pallies dont get much survivability over crusaders.

Problem with non trans is some people want some of the new maps, some dont, some people want the new gear, some dont and so on so a non trans server is only going to be suited for a very small amount of people

That's called being a completionist more than anything else to me. :s
