Can you play Multi Servers?
« on: Jun 01, 2008, 01:45 am »
Hello I do play on Rebirth and I was wondering if it is possible to play another server. I see they all have their own Patches to download but it applies to the rag folder. I would like to try other servers but don't know if I have to reinstall each one when wanting to play another server.

Playing Limit-RO. Tired of Administrating/GMing retarded servers with retarded owners.

Depends what files they change. If they modify same stuff, you'll need multiple RO installations.

Probably.

unless hard drive space is at a premium, it's easier to just use a second folder.

If the servers use identical data, that's great. If they use completely different grfs, even better. If they overlap (i.e. they both use, let's say 'qdata.grf" and it's different for both servers, you're going to have fun renaming things), it can be iffy.

The only thing with multi-servers in the same folder is you'll tend to get a dominant one that will open all the time, even though you've clicked on another one. Separate folders are much nicer and easier.

lmao i play like 20 servers at once =P
the only trick to it is making sure that each server only effects its own files =P

and ya use separate folders for now =P

Easier to do it when they don't have any of their own patches or anything (like Mou!). I'm sure there are quite a few who don't have their own installers and all that nonsense.

Put servers into different folders, copy non-server-specific/basic server files to those folders, then just move the sdata.grf around (cut/paste) to whichever server folder you're trying to use to play.

The problem is that data.grf itself often gets changed with these custom installers or patchers. So you basically need a whole different install for each server.

Messing with the actual data.grf or sdata.grf is a sure-fire way to botch your kRO installation so you can't update it anymore...

Which is why they use custom patchers... don't ever doubt how lousy some servers can be.

then just move the sdata.grf around

Servers typically don't touch sdata.grf, so this would work great.

It's just for servers that shove everything into some other grf where this wouldn't work.

Most effective way is using multiple data folders/data.ini's,  however you may have to rename them ( especially for the servers with ALOT of customs )   Just redirect the .grf in data.ini to the server's .grf that you wish to play on.  Remember you may have to rename "Data" folder if that server uses files in it.  If you wish to switch back to that server, simply rename those files back.
