Looking to decide on a farming class for a brand new midrate server. My only real issue is that I refuse to play a Hunter, even if it is the most efficient by most means. Besides that, what are my options? Farming zeny will not be of much use right now, seeing as the market is non-existent, so I am looking to gear a future Paladin, as well as farm materials for my future Biochemist.

TLDR: Recommended Pre-Renewal farming class, not Sniper. Farming locations are also highly appreciated!

I've been a pretty big fan of Paladin Shield Boomerang hunting. They're especially good for places that weight limit is a problem since you'll be pushing 100+ STR. You do have to worry about link, but it was still much more fun than playing hunter / sniper. Here are some things that you can hunt with Paladin.

Evil Druids
Marcs
Strouf
Agav
Abysmal Knights
Cecil Damon
Wanderers

Most older MVPs.
Bradium Golems (w/ Ice Pick)

And a lot of other stuff.
eos
Est. 2008

wiz/stalky/ws/lk

there are so many viable farming classes.

but yeah, sc pally works. not for every situation, but it works for the majority of pvm

XileRo is the only HR I know that has a reasonable PvP system. I did watch the RWC like you said, all I see is people spamming the room like every other gang fight there is in RO.

I've always been partial to pvm agi assassins, just cuz they're easy, have good aspd, good flee, and decent HP pools.  Grimtooth is a great mobbing tool as well, and Cloak makes it even easier to sneak it and pick out just the mobs you wanna hunt.

Agi BSes are also awesome, if you can get over the lack of ranged skills.  Their carts and large weight limits allow you to stay out farming for hours, and OC helps you rack up even more money.

Agi Two-handed LKs are kind of a blend of the previous two: they have large HP pools and can pot well like sins (though they lack a bonus flee skill), as well as having an increased weight limit and aspd like BSes.  They can also walk a lot faster than normal chars and BB is an awesome mobbing skill.  Once you trans, Parry can help make up for the lack of flee.  Plus, LKs and Pallies share like 90% of the same gear, and like 75%-85% of the same gear as Creators, so that's less gear to buy/hunt.

You could also try a Bard or Dancer as a farmer.  They're like Hunter-lites, but can reset to useful party characters.  If you wanna farm small stuff like Sharp Leaves or Goat Horns or other REQ items, Gank Rogues are great for getting extra loot.

Gunslinger is a surprisingly good farming class, especially with endow. you can oneshot half the monsters ingame using fullbuster and only one weapon- a gatekeeper-DD. this is mainly suggested for a dex/vit build with about 40 int, vit gunslinger is generally superior to agi gunslinger for, well, everything- including PvM.

these things tend to depend on server as well. if it has something rediculous like free healer and warp to any map, you might as well only pvm with a champion. if bombs are absurdly cheap, do chemist and let a vanilmirth be a decoy for the monsters.

Narrowed it down to Stalker and Blacksmith. I would like to have the least reliance on outside sources (dual boxing, Soul Linker, Priest, etc.). Im doubting Stalker's ability to kill anything significant though without an Ice Pick, which is out of the question.

You don't need that much to hunt as a rogue/stalker. Just get a damascus from the npc as a beginning tool and asap get elemental versions of it from some random bs/ws to the long road to be a stalker[if you don't want to pay for them then just make a sage on another account to endow and done].
Getting some basic agi/flee gears also make you be ready to roll into something easy and later get better stuff like IP and etc.

Thoth

if you choose stalker just for the autosteal... don't. besides if you were gonna normal attack you would've chosen sniper.
just do smith and mammonite things that pay for themselves, like hill winds or w/e

RaimSuriom

Well, I was stuck on the decision because I think Stalker provides a whole bunch of ways to farm (melee, bow, caster), where as Blacksmith is very limited and has limited AoE capability. However, the benefit of quick Overcharge and forging my own gears on a fresh server is tempting. I guess I am just under the impression that BS is incredibly expensive to start.

If you're new to the server I really recommend a smith over stalker. A stalker is gonna be a slower killer. (blacksmith has much higher damage output with self buffs)

Having a whitesmith is much more useful anyway. They can forge and refine later on. With cart boost you can get to each monster quickly. The cart and weight limit really keep you going longer.

It's just that I've played a stalker before to 90x on a 6x server. It was very slow, I didn't get much rewards out of it either, since the class can't kill much.

Play a smith, try to get thara, a BG weapon and start farming raydrics/ak's. You can use or sell the elu, and the cards are worth a lot there. It's not even expensive at all, you don't have to play with mammomite.

in general yeah, ws is a better pvm-er and even mvp-er.

definitely able to go more places and make them big bucks. in terms of utility it can OC/DC, act as a storage account, refine stuff at cheaper prices and higher rates. definitely brings alot to the table

stalky is just for the poor guy who can't really afford much at the moment. btw stalkies are really easy to level. just copy TU and gank dem anubishes

I echo this sentiment entirely.  On a new server, Smiths are great PVMers.  Stalkers require a decent amount of gear to get the same amount of power/damage as smiths, which unfortunately they can't hunt for themselves.

All you need to start with a Smith is a Two-Handed Axe, and maybe a pantie/undershirt combo.  Then you can head out to Hill Winds and make some easy money.  You can even level it to smith faster by leeching with an Endow Sage (which you can then use to endow and one-shot Hill Winds with).  Then you can OC the loot, buy some stuff, go to BG, get a BG Mace, farm some HOs, get some Orc Axes, farm Zipper Bears, and then start CTing the crap out of everything.

Edit:  Forgot to add that the only real reason I'd make a Gank Rogue/Stalker is if I'm farming a ton of high % drops like REQ items (Sharps, Horns, Huge Leaves, etc.), herbs for brewing, or easy money items like pieces of cake or Mavkas.  Anything more than farming easy items, I'd make something else.

don't underestimate the farming speed of killing a monster in one skill. its more than twice as fast as 2-shots, because you can use the skill delay to move and find another target(and alot less dangerous).
farming is usually oneshot or one big aoe kill, however smith can also solo skillspam for the rare really hard targets.

PuffRO

wiz with propery equips can go to rachel sanctuary and hunt for loots.
rogue in moscovia hunting that fairy monster with steal

Nicosmic

If your server has dungeon warps and a healer, you can't go wrong with hunters. They're pretty much the most low income versus DPS output you can get. They're extremely fast.
