Why do people like high rates?
« on: Jul 10, 2008, 10:47 pm »
To me it seems like the game gets so distorted from it's actual form that, other then the sprites, the game is hardly recognizable anymore.

Although high rate WoE/PvP/MvPing requires different stratagies then what low rates require, it almost seems as if it would be fairly easy for a low rate player to step into the high rate servers and do very well. On the contrary, I have seen very many avid high rate players try to make the transition to low rates and give up.

What is it that people like about them? The wings that take up half the screen? The high hitting numbers? The no skill delay?

The additional solo-ability.

I use high rates as a place where I can explore places that i can't normally go to without a lot of complications, or with so much chaos of playing in a team that I can't simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the environment a little. I'm an exploring kind of person, and I like finding all those subtle little places and signs of symbology that a lot of people like to miss. However, in some areas, the combat can be so intense and distracting, that it's so, so much harder to look around.

That's my take, at least. xD

Also, from my point of view - and this may simply be my constant bad experiences - they also have the nice, pleasant, relaxed people. Most level to the max, get maximum gear, so on and so forth, within a week or three, and then relax and enjoy there time talking and playing with the community. They play the game because they have time to kill, or just enjoy it.

I've found so many agitating pricks in low rates, that I've kind of given up going into the community in a "head first" kind of way. The only way I've ever enjoyed low rates is when I hide with a group of awesome people in a guild, and that's only a few people, not the community. There are those nice people in them, mind, but I've only found them doing the same things I do: hide with a group in a guild.

There are those few lucky servers that don't look like this, but there are so many more that do, that I've generally avoided low rates like a plague, unless I know enough people that go to the server to meld in and enjoy my time with those few people enough to inspire me to play.

The in-game play itself is often better, especially when you hit WoE, as it's so much more involving, however, so I always love it from that aspect of low rates. =D

I've got to say though, I agree with the transition point of view a little too much. xD I started playing from the first open beta in iRO, so I know what it means to truly grind. However, as time progressed, I've consistently gotten used to faster, higher rates. Alas, I now have a bit of a hard time getting adjusted to rates lower than 15x. So... Alas, while I'm more of a fan of mid-rates than high, I do accept that a lot of high rate-ish players have quite a bit of problems getting used to low rates again. D=

Actually, not only about the grind. I find some HR and max level>99 players having a hard time getting used to high rate 99/70 servers.

And I have always had problems with imbalancing, so I tend not to touch high rates.
XileRo is the only HR I know that has a reasonable PvP system. I did watch the RWC like you said, all I see is people spamming the room like every other gang fight there is in RO.

99/70 high rates aren't that bad i guess...i dislike the frequency of MvP cards, but i guess some people enjoy that.

Ah, yeah. The large number of cards strewn about in those servers.

Luckily the server I'm in has a dynamic drop rate, in addition to high exp rates. More servers should have those dynamic custom drop rates. For example, MVP cards dropping at 0.01%, while cards like Hydra dropping at 5% or such.

I can understand HR as a quick way to WoE, but what I really don't understand is increasing the level limit and then making mobs/MvPs stronger as well.

I mean what is the point? It's like that idiotic dynamic level system in Oblivion.

They want to be different from low rates. Pointless to be honest, but some people like that.

I personally like rates a bit higher than iRO/kRO just because I hate the grind at times but I still want it to be a challenge to get to max lvl.

You fellows pain me.

The reason most people think High-Rate is dumb is because they are looking at it in comparison to Low rate with its base level of 99, job 70, etc.

Consider highrates as an entirely new experience seperate (because in truth, they are) from the mechanics of low rate RO. It has its own potential for balance and can be just as great as any low rate. I could spend a long time talking about this, but i think you get the idea.

Conclusion: highrates and lowrates are like the difference between skate boarding and sail boating. One is more smooth and pleasurable, while the other is bone-crushingly fun. Both are nice, which is why both high rates and low rates still exist.

It's more fast-paced. It's easier to solo. It's easier to get to WoE. It's everything Ansuz said it is. What exactly is hard to understand about this?

What is it that people like about them? The wings that take up half the screen? The high hitting numbers? The no skill delay?

I'm glad you can brainstorm the bad parts. But did you ever consider the opposite side? If you just thought about without bias for 2 goddam seconds, you would understand.

I'm guessing it's for the grinding.

A server that would interest me would be one that's 99/70 with high rates that eliminate the grinding and item collecting, but keeps the MvP cards and other extreme things at a low %.

Nice! We have similar tastes.

I agree with what most people are saying about the 99/70 HRs. The servers I've made a home of myself is one of them, where the rates are considered that of a HR, and things are fairly easy, but all in all, there is still challenge.

I think what most people misconstrue about HRs/SHRs is that they look at it in comparison to LRs, or even the original servers, and think, "Gee, that must be where the lazy, inexperienced players go," when, infact, that is far from the truth. It's true that on HRs it's extremely easy to reach the max level, but if people would give things a try, they would notice that a lot of the good/popular HRs or SHRs implement challenges just for that reason. Most of the popular/non-corrupted HRs try hard to balance things out, and try hard to implement either custom things in order to keep the original feel of the RO challenge, or just lower other rates (drop rates, rates for any custom achievments).

I guess what I'm trying to say is, there's not as much of a difference between most good, balanced (as close to balanced as possible) HRs and LRs/MRs; basically just the rates, but the challenge is still there. I guess it just varies on whether or not you want the hunting/creating to be a challenge, or if you want to have to grind in order to achieve max cap.

To me, the most blatant difference is the class balance and totally different way of playing the game.
