What are the people opening new servers thinking?

Calling it a donation

To avoid legal issue.

Surprise you don't know that.

Yes, but its not really a donation. It is illegal and they are using Paypal to try and get around it?

If you think I'm "stirring the pot" by bringing up something that has become accepted because people think its their right to try to run a server they cant afford by selling things they are not legally allowed to then I dont care, because they ARE doing something illegal. I wish to not see it condoned and accepted here. Will that happen? No. But I can at least say I'm against and it want it to change.

As I said in previous post its impossible to change it, weather you like it or not.

I am not trying to pick a fight here either, its being realistic...

Uh...Lucanesti? This is important and you should read and re-read this until you understand it.

RO Private servers aren't exactly legal themselves. You and a choice few others can pick apart every aspect of donations and whatnot until you're blue in the face, it doesn't change the fact that you're no better in a legal sense than the admins who are "selling items" by simply PLAYING ON THESE SERVERS. You can scream to the heavens that you want change, but the only way you're going to get change, is to stop pissing and moaning about it and attempt to run your own server. If your opinion doesn't change after that, then all we can really do is shrug and stay in opposite directions. But until you do in fact RUN a private server, YOURSELF, I suggest you stop slamming things such as donations, before you get labeled as "another uppity player".

P.S: Any of you other "Larry Law" types can go ahead and read this post until it imprints in your retinas, before any of you consider bringing "legality" into the world of RO Private Servers.

i was under the impression that Ro private servers were legal as long as you dont use any of the sprites from the original game, or any maps, music, names etc. but then since no private server out there does this, i guess it makes it illegal. =X

but yea what Descent said. im pretty sure playing on private servers itself is illegal so really cant say anything about selling donation items.

Wouldn't using no sprites from the original game be damned near impossible?

He meant not using custom I am sure.

But I've asked a lawyer (really good one for all I know), said it doesn't matter and it is legal unless you use the donation money for private use.

Poki

You actually went through the trouble to see if it was legal or not? Whatever the case, I believe it's illegal to be even making or playing in a private server. It's just that no one really cares to do anything about it.

I wasn't attacking you lucanesti, but I'm very protective of my server and will always defend it if attacked, I think everything in regards to that has been addressed, so moving on.

Seems the topic itself has derailed from there being too many new (bad) private server popping up, to problems of donations.

Server owners have a responsibility in regards to donation, you don't need to open up a server with something that costs 1000$/month, you should adapt your needs to your population, start small and upgrade later. Players also have a responsibility, look up the donation rewards, if you don't agree to them then simply don't join.

As for new servers popping up, someone said that they only were hurting themselves, but I disagree, the players who join it expecting someone professional lose their time if it ends up just being a kid with delusions of grandeur who thought he could run a server and it would make him cool if he did, but it turns out it's too much work for them and they give up.

Anyone with half a brain can set up a eAthena server, and while I appreciate the easiness and all the work that eAthena did, it also provides for a lot of junk servers. I wish people had to take a test before they could start a server, to see if they are motivated, dedicated and resourceful enough. As it stands, a new server is a complete gamble for players.

I don't think a voting system such as newgrounds would work here, servers are too much in competition with each other, some people would go blame blame blame without even glancing. So we've identified the "problem", so to speak, but there is no real solution, we just have to make do with what we have.
