I recently started to play RO again. So today I was looking around for a decently populated server because my old one is pretty much dead. Thinking reddit would be a decent place to get a gauge for how lively private servers are now a days, i come across the Tree of Savior announcement type deal. It is supposedly a sequel to Ragnarok in a more faithful (mayberightwordhaha) sequel than the current RO2. I was just curious if anyone had any information regarding this new project.

here is are few links that i've found

Reviving this thread because I saw some people talking about it in that other thread and before you guys start discussing about if it will replace RO or not, I thought I should probably first fully inform you about it.

First of all, Tree of Savior is created by the original creator of Ragnarok Online Kim Hakkyu. He used to be the CEO of Gravity originally, but then got into a fight with the Gravity's president in 2005 and left the company (which if you ask me is also the time when RO started to slowly become worse). He left the company and proceeded in developing the game Granado Espada. In case you don't know it, it's a more modern MMORPG with the twist that each player actually plays 3 characters (aka a family). Granado Espada is next to Ragnarok Online also the only game that had SoundTeMP compose the OST. While it was fairly well designed and it was highly praised for its amazing OST, it received some criticism because of its integrated botting (you could set to auto-level and then just leave the computer) and also had several people voicing their opinion that they don't really like the idea of having to play multiple characters at once. Kim Hakkyu then announced that he wants to "go back to the roots" which is when he talked about Project R1 (later known as Tree of Savior) the first time.

Saying that Tree of Savior is by the old Ragnarok Online team is quite a stretch, though. It's mostly just Kim Hakkyu, but he of course had big influence on the game design of Ragnarok Online (until 2005).

Most of the original Ragnarok Online development team actually stayed with Gravity much longer than Kim Hakkyu. In fact they even did RO2-1 (The Gate of the World) which was also quite as uniquely designed as RO but wasn't so well received because people apparently like "everything generic" more and complained about every little idea they added. Gravity eventually proceeded on cancelling the project and planned to create a fully generic MMORPG ("known formula = success") and call that RO2 (Legend of the Second) instead. The development team refused to do such a thing, however (apparently they like unique ideas), and left the company at that time.
Most of them however didn't rejoin Kim Hakkyu with Tree of Savior but instead they founded their own company which then developed the MMORPG Lime Odyssey. Unfortunately because of... let's say, bad management (good developers don't make good managers), the game never managed to even reached the west (except for alpha) before it shut down even in Korea. Which is quite a shame, because that game looked very promising and it even had Yasunori Mitsuda composing the OST (he did the OST for Chrono Trigger for example).

Anyway, back to Tree of Savior. You don't really need to do much "guess work" here anymore because Kim Hakkyu actually created an English blog and posts frequent updates on it with very detailed information. You should check it out before discussing further about how the game will or will not be!

And also interesting is the interview with the art director Maggi:
http://blog.treeofsavior.com/en/?p=134
(Note: I have NO information that she was also involved with Ragnarok Online - but she was working together with Kim Hakkyu already in Granado Espada. So I think that it is false that Tree of Savior is by the same graphic team.)

However, it will have the same sound team because as already with Ragnarok Online and Granado Espada, SoundTeMP will create the OST for Tree of Savior. There was no official announcement on that yet, but Jinbae Park (of SoundTeMP) made a twitter post which is translated:
QuoteAt G-Star, 'Tree of Savior' was exhibited. Including myself, all old members of SoundTeMP participated [in ToS]. Although the trailer's music is not mine, beginning of next year (2014) my tracks will come out.

Hope this answers some of the questions you had.

The real talk is that this game looks like its for children.

Either that or I just prefer graphics from Priston Tale and RO1.

Though, I can wait to get that new OST. naofho;

Well, I do like the art style a lot. I agree with many of the things the art director said in the interview. Like that having no rotatable camera allows for much more beautiful scenery.

I'm too old to care for stuff like if it looks like it is for children or not.

Said a guy.. in a board for ragnarok.

The none cam rotation sucks. Thought it's free to use and this limitation is a really big minus.
Also my expections to a game has been changed over the time. Back in the das I enjoyed when I was running around with no target for fun but I'm now focused at the endcontents which the game provides.

I doubt about that this game will be the inofficial Ro 2. Just another hyped game. Sadly.

I never liked rotatable camera. I always get lost in games that have this. Plus it's annoying to having to rotate the camera to find hidden stuff behind houses and so on. It really made me hate 3D games in general actually. 2D style and that "sprites walking on beautiful background pictures" style (e.g. Final Fantasy VII-IX, Star Ocean 2) are the only graphic styles I really like. So for me it's a big improvement over Ragnarok Online graphic-wise.

I don't think Tree of Savior will be an unofficial RO2 either. It will be quite different, but that doesn't mean it will be worse. I don't think it's overhyped.

Things I really like about Tree of Savior:
1) The development staff is awesome and incredibly communicative towards their fans (I've never seen Korean developers write so much English!)
2) Random spawn locations! Basically it will be the only game next to RO that actually has random spawn locations. This is one of the main reasons I liked RO.
3) It has some features I really find neet like for example that monsters will run around randomly at first, but if they meet allied monsters, they will group up and walk around together.
4) Graphic style looks amazing.
5) The job system seems to have non-combat classes - you can completely dedicate yourself and be as specialized as "Creates arrows for archers" or "Tending sheep". It's not fully developed yet, but I always wanted to see more games that have a completely community driven economy. Seems like they are going into that direction.
6) The combat is very action-y and requires playing skill.
7) Possible gamepad support!

Things that I don't like:
C1) Exp gets adjusted depending on level difference. I really hate this system and it was one of the main reasons I quit official RO when renewal came. This system always makes games too easy because there is no real reward for fighting monsters above your level. I prefer a risk & reward system, where a double as strong monster gives quadruple as much exp.
C2) The stat system doesn't encourage hybrid builds. It's just "1 stat point per level". I think what RO did perfectly was the stat system. The whole idea of increasing costs with higher stats was amazing and worked out so perfectly.

I played this game as a child so it does make sense.

The point is that the average population are adults. And even at the very beginng there were a mixed relation of kids and adults.

TBH, they don't really look that unique to me because I've seen similar concepts at some but the game looks decent enough as one single game to play all that different concept.
Until now, the game just seems a better King's Road and that's a facebook game that I used to play in the past with my sister. Don't get me wrong, the game is actually quite good but ToS, until now, just seems that same game with more quests, bigger budget and more chars, nothing more.

I will still wait to see what they're gonna release in the future but I don't have that high expectations for now, maybe in the future I will have =P

I'd rather see ragnarok restored then play this. However, this does look interesting. Definitely excited to see where this goes  /gg

yeah RO1 and its renewal version is great game but lack players and servers dying after few few weeks/months so its not interesting for me to play anymore but I am looking forward to this, cant wait
