so... I picked up Ragnarok DS the other day.
Let me say this, first of all... Great game, Should NOT be called ragnarok.
The game play is very simple, you walk with the touch screen or the D pad, and everything is done on the touch screen. the buttons are only for quick access tot he menus. Battle is done exactly like real RO, your stats and formulas are spot on (for the most part, i think) you just tap once to start attacking. Skills are done in a manner that suit the touch screen, as well. for example, first aid, you tap the icon, then tap yourself to heal, Envenom you tap the icon, then drag a line across the enemy to attack it. it's a very easy to pick up game with fun systems. the sprites and maps look like they were taken straight from the game. And, for the most part, the music is spot on!
Now... for the grim side.. the reasons it should not be called Ragnarok.... *lightning crash, lights flicker*
First off, the thing that p***ed me off the most about this game is, yo can only go to 2-1. There are no 2-2 class, trans, or let alone 3rd class despite it just coming out recently. That's the bulkhead of my anger and rage. and to put the icing on the cake, they added 2 unique classes (dark knight and shaman) but couldn't burdened to give me my stalker *o*!! Next, skills cap at level 8, instead of 10, which in some cases is ok, it gives you more skill points for other skills, but c'mon! And you job change at job level 30, not 40. They butchered some skills. The only class i've played so far is thief, but they took away hiding, and gave them "stealth", which is essentially the same thing as hiding, except "a high level of steal allows you to move while stealthed". You also have no platinum skills, but you can learn the most useless one, sand attack, like any other skill. I want my backslide and stone abuse!! Now, on to items. Most items are similar tot he real game, except Equipment. Most equipment retains its values, but only has a couple slots. i'v only seen 1 slot so far. imagine, a katana with only 1 slot... And most items have kerdkjcsjksjk prices. The jellopy sells for 20z each and you can buy ygg leaves for 500z each. Speed potions only last roughly 3 minutes, instead of 30. And fly wings teleport you to the beginning of a dungeon and there are no butterfly wings. they renamed alot of monsters. Familiars and drainlars are called bat and vampire bat now, and alot of monsters are places they shouldn't be. And when you get a monster card, it usually has the real name, like Familiar card. They tampered with alot of the card's effects. High orc now gives you a 10% chance to block attack instead of 5% reflection. Some of the maps are pretty accurate, geographically wise, but there are some that were totally tampered with. Online play can only be done with 2 friends, you cant have a full 6 party, and you can only do one dungeon after level 50. You don't walk though towns, navigation are done through a button-menu system, which isn't bad but still....
All in all, Ragnarok DS, i do recommend playing it. But, if you're a die-hard RO nut like me, it WILL make you rage... Alot....
