Most expensive server costs monthly?

Whats the greatest cost you heard for running a Ragnarok server? My GM on my old one said he needed 300 a month, which was his excuse for pushing on donations onto the members. Your thoughts?

Pandora

Well it depends on the population size, if it was a small server (< 100), he was either overpaying or lying. When my server was still small it was home hosted, the cost was minimal, it would also have been possible to get something from systeminplace for about 30$ a month that could host about 50 players.

I pay 215 a month for dedicated hosting, about 200 for advertisement (varies each month), and the websites cost amounts to a bit less than 10 a month (paid yearly).

I think it was over 2k for AnthemRO?  Lol Aegis.
Super Smash Brothers 64!

Khaine

I've never even heard of a server costing over 2k O.O then again AnthemRO is a big server...

Servers can cost anywhere from 20$(for nothing more than a simple host) to 300$

No, it's because of how much resources and bandwidth AEGIS takes up, and how stupid the admin is.
They COULD have converted to eAthena, but the admin, Felix Kastner aka Talis, refused to change for the longest time. I believe he still doesn't want to, and was banned from Paypal, so they are making the server even more retarded by giving extra credit for donations to keep the server alive. However, this will only kill it. All because they don't have the money to support the server now. On top of that, the server lags like hell. I don't see how people can stand playing with all that lag. Also, the server costs are far more than what was previously stated. I think they are just over $1k each server, and they had 6 servers. I think they got rid of two, so that leaves them with around $4k a month. Unless I am mistaken, since I haven't been there since....hell I can't even remember it's been so long. I could be wrong.

Moral of the story: Don't be a Talis.

Also, for those of you who worry about me giving out his name, I gave that link because that's how he gave me his info on AIM, long ago.

Hope 4k a month is only a joke or a misunderstanding... how many college students will be able to pay off their debts if they can somehow find the money to earn 4k a month. Actually forget the college situation... it helps everyone in general if 4k a month isn't spent on a simple private server for a MMO game.

Gaming is fun and all, but 4k a month doesn't sound to be worth it at all...

Not sure if it's 4k, but at least 2k+

Sounds better, but still 2,000 dollars for an online game?

yC

4k a month? u mean donation right?

Back in 2004 I remember seeing Quality RO or EuphRO (always mix up the two ...) told players they pay a total of 2000-3000 a month for server costs and expect that much donation to cover it.  I read the topic, $800 a server lol the biggest bs i have ever seen but it worked with the people.  Well I know The Planet is like the most expensive host, plus a lot of bandwidth ... still i would give it 1k max.

I am glad server costs are more transparent nowaday so that kind of big lie can't hold anymore.

Back on topic, well I think some owner just didn't save for a rainy day and didn't pick the most affordable solution.

DeePee

They really do pay a few thousand dollars a month for their servers. AnthemRO is an Aegis server, so it's not as cheap as an eAthena server. Runs on Windows, uses MSSQL, needs basically at least 3 powerful servers to run it and...they had to install a hardware firewall to stop an attack.
Hosting an eAthena server is extremely cheap, but hosting an Aegis server is a different story.

Pandora

Last I heard, anthem has a private rack of dedicated servers, not sure which of those, level 4 management which is like 100 a month, the firewall not sure which one they got, I honestly don't think they pay 2k a month, but they could probably say they got a bunch of options to justify that cost.

I once suggested to them they could pay for 6 months instead of 1 month at a time and save, but they said they didn't have the budget to pay 6 months at once.

Seeing as how the creator of this topic is talking about me and my server I might as well reply... Since I don't like people spreading lies about me.

my server's goal each month was $300 a month, we had a $150 a month dedicated server, a $60 vps for the ftp/client download/patcher server, and the rest went to advertising on rms, gamesites200, and other websites. This is a pretty standard monthly donation goal for many private servers, so before you say "which was his excuse for pushing on donations onto the members" you might wanna check your facts. >.>

Recently I moved hosts for both my dedicated and vps, reducing my goal in half almost, to now only $200 a month.

Where the hell does it say its about you? huh?  I don't see your name anywhere in the Op's first post.
Great you posted your server's fees, awesome you contributed, that's cool and all...but if someone wants to think that a server own is trying to get donations, then let them.  For all you know, could just be some random server he is talking about.  <_<

I'm guessing Kisuka may have had a discussion with the OP on their server about this already, also in Mad Niz' "Current Server" option it says "LuminaRO, RRO". (RRO = Ragnarok Revolution)

Do most of these people have some sort of day job?  Or rely on donations alone to pay for it?

That's incredibly insane and irresponsible and a waste of cash.  OTHER people's cash.

Well.. I can't speak for other servers, but in heRO's case, players donate to help the server because they like it, but I do have a full time day job, if the donations don't cover the server's fees I pay whatever is left. Of course, if the donation suddenly dropped and no one pitched in anymore I would probably reduce the amount we pay for publicity. I've never ever pushed players to donate or threaten them to close if we didn't receive enough money like I've seen other servers do. The donation page is just there on the website/forum and players do it willingly. I post a list of the server's expenses on the forums, and no one has complained about their money being wasted so far.

However, the majority of private server admin don't seem to be willing to absorb the cost of running their server, most rely on donation exclusively and on more than one occasion on these boards we've heard of admins inflating the numbers to receive more than they actually need (not saying this is Kisuka's case).

"incredibly insane and irresponsible and a waste of cash.  OTHER people's cash."
I just call it greedy, insane/irresponsible would imply they don't know exactly what they're doing XD

I'm done helping Talis out with paying for server bills (had a bit of a falling out with some server people so I'm done there hah), but it most definitely is over $2000 per month. Here's just some of the costs directly from my credit card statement online. This is the last 120 days, I can't seem to pull up more than that from my statements online. At least he sold his car so he's paying me back now. Moral of the story, Aegis is f*** expensive, so is iweb.

But in any case, he does care about the server, enough for him to sell his own car to repay me, and to pay for the server to make up costs. Dumb, but he does care. Shoulda listened to me back when they weren't in trouble, to change to eA. And it was pretty dumb of me to trust him and loan him money, but hey, at least he sold his car to pay me back >_>

As for Zone, and them getting "banned from Paypal," it's something that paypal does. Hell, look at foobar2000. They got their Paypal frozen at around the same time Anthem got theirs frozen. And they're just a freeware audio player asking for donations.

The donation button has been removed due to PayPal being thieves.
Thanks to everybody who donated so far, your funds mostly got through. "

Agree with Pandora 100%
The basic server costs are really cheap.
Everone saying their server costs 2k a month is a big liar >.>
I say that because of my own server
I started Lumina paying 50$ montly on a vps and using my old webhost. Easy to pay when you have a job.
It could even be cheaper if I had used SIP, for example. It really covers all the needs for small amount of players.
With the increase of players, and donations started coming I moved hosts a few times. I currently pay 159$ monthly for a dedicated with x4 cpu and 6gb ram. If by some reason people stop donating, Id still be able to pay it. Even if a server used 10 of those it wouldnt cost 2k. And do you know any server using 10 of those? Even if it was windows, windows servers are only like 20-50$ more.
What makes big costs on my server are the extras, like advertsing, softwares, etc. Ive already spent 211$ on a 30 day ad on top200 for example.
I can't afford things like that, but thats what the donations are for. If people stop donating, all I have to do is cut the extras and the server would still be running normally. Which I personally believe wouldnt be necessary, since on december there were so many donations that I even gave part of it to a cancer foundation.
Being myself an admin, I have nothing against using whats left of donations for personal uses as long as everything is being done to improve the server always when possible and needed. But I'm seriously against SCAM.
Seriously, if someone tells you "I spend 2k on the server, please donate or server will close", they are just trying to scam you, pushing you to donate. Those are just the type of admins I avoided when I was a player.

Tom~

@Adhelle, in AnthemRO's case, you're wrong.

AnthemRO is using Aegis, the official software, which is really expensive to mantain. :/

And so you killed yourself,
but you killed everyone else around you too.

why do they keep it then?
=x
i know its probably a huge headache to do that, but i think the admin should be working to change it to eathena, mainly if he is running through financials problems.

P.S.: but anyway, i have also met many pservers running eathena that tell players they need 1k+, one of then even said 3k was needed.

Denia

Yeah, my credit card debt is no joke haha. And those bills are the real deal. Though yeah you probably think I just filled random s*** in. Most people do since there have been so many past people who lie about random stuff like that. Aegis, while can be run on ONE machine, it isn't efficient to do as such with so many people, with the logs, etc.

And anyway...

They keep it because it's Aegis. The server was originally Aegis, Talis liked Aegis, and despite my BEGGING him to make the switch, he wouldn't do it since:

1. He likes Aegis, had tried eA a long time ago, thought it wasn't stable, stuck to that idea.
2. Doesn't like the game play differences on eA
3. Believe people would leave if the server were to switch to eA. (I think maybe like, 5 people on the server really actually care about the server software being Aegis etc).

Well in any case, they're trying to make the switch now, but I think it might be too late to do as such seeing as how funds are etc. But hey, if they make it, then hooray for them.

Sarin

This makes me curious, what's the actual gameplay differewnce between eA and Aegis?

Mainly skill formulas/behaviour, but also some things like ASPD/Aftercast Delay (which the aRO staff is apparently now struggling with). eAthena is generally a lot..."faster". A lot of this can be fixed by changing some values in the config files but there are also quite some things that are plain wrong.

Not sure if this is still bugged on eA, but when we converted to eA, it behaved completely wrong with Sinxes using 2 daggers and a shield. If they'd enchant poison with 2 daggers on, then switch one dagger for a shield, the poison would go away.
Another example is the parent/child party share system. This has been bugged on eAthena for like...forever.

In general, the both are very alike. It's mainly the small things that you don't notice easily that are different and have quite an effect if not taken care of. People who have always used eAthena won't really notice them, but if you're a server that has always been on Aegis, things like these are a thorn in the eye.

Revenant

Most I'd heard before this topic per month was $300.

I pay...

$38 a month for my VPS
$15.60 yearly for my domain name
$107.40 yearly for my web hosting
$17.70 every 6 months for a mumble server (Open source VoIP server)
For the love of god, people, stop posting topics about recruiting staff on this forum, or indeed any forum. If you really feel the need to publicize the fact you're incapable of running your own server, and as such, must rely on someone you know nothing about as a crutch, be prepared to deal with the consequences, as people who go deliberately looking for GM positions are most likely as dumb as the inept server owner in question, if not moreso.

People offering paid services may or may not be screwing you over, depending on the product. Web designers? There's quite a good few out there; many take time to do their work, and charge quite a bit as a result. Just be sure you're not getting someone elses' website, rebranded for quick cash. If you hire someone to do things such as install customs for you, give up running a server. You're wasting time and letting someone take advantage of your stupidity.

I went from playing eAthena servers to playing the official servers, obviously using Aegis.  The first thing that hit me was the outrageous lag, but otherwise I couldn't really tell the difference.

I pay:
25 bucks a month for VPS
50 bucks a year for the webspace, I split the base cost of 100 bucks with my fiancee who also uses it.
aaand this year I spent a grand total of 99 cents for the domain.

I have a feeling I pay some of the cheapest bills :p

I think 300 dollars is a reasonable cost. Considering it includes hosting, advertising, website maintenance and hosting, domains, and other things.

If players are willing to donate, I think that would be really nice of them. Not just to buy things, but to help the server overall.

We're trying to cut down on some costs... since most of the players can't even donate since they can't pay online.

For us, it costs 15 US dollars monthly (cheapest VPS that I've researched about) to host the server and 9 US dollars annually for the website domain and hosting. Got some other free things as well (Trellis Desk, CP, and forum though we switched). So far, it seems like we're the cheapest XD..?

It's kind of scary to see how some server costs are past 1000 dollars O_O. That's really... wow. Expensive.

Only problem is, you get what you pay for.

We switched to another host from Frantech because of their downtime. We ended up going to VPSLand. It was a little bit more of an increase (from $12.50 to $19~then $29ish) but it seemed worth it.

God knows that later on we found out that they had horrible reviews. Our server would go offline, be unresponsive to any admin access, so we'd have to message them to reboot it. It literally took them 24-48 hours to reboot it. When I put in a request, instead of just going and doing it (what, maybe press a button?) they would"Move it to Reboot status" then wait. Another 8 hours "Queued for reboot". I'm like what the f***, seriously, that's totally useless.

Best advice evar: DO NOT GO TO VPSLAND OR THEY WILL EAT YOUR SOUL.

Anyways, the host we have no is great and actually pays us by the hour for each hour they are down ^_^

Lol, so you're the one who outbid me. DAMN IT!

For eAthena it would never go over $500 per month for JUST hosting costs. Even with 5k players.

These are the hosting costs that I currently pay:

  • Dedicated Server running eAthena - $149
  • VPS server hosting website utilities + downloads- $20

$169, and it's probably capable of handling ~1000 players.

HiddenDragon

EssenceRO currently spends $220/mo for dedicated box from Softlayer. Pretty sweet as it's held 1500+ connections with only 50% CPU. Not to mention, it served both website/forums/eAthena all on the same box.

As there's relatively few servers larger than 1500, anyone paying more than $250 is either paying for way overpriced servers or lying :<

Yukino

Wow, you all spend quite a lot of money monthly... Les numeros scare me.

At GorthexTiger: LOL, thanks for the advice XD. Your current host sounds awesome... pay you by the hour every time they're down O_O. That's a good deal.

At Royale: That's actually pretty good compared to the 300 dollars mentioned before. I'm guessing advertising would just add a bit more... to around 200?

At HiddenDragon: Maybe the prices have gone cheaper now? Costs below 300 would be tolerable, and anything over 500 -changed my mind- seems really expensive now after comparing everyone's costs.

oops xD

@ghortex, i recommend iweb. the first dedicated plan costs 69$, its actually very cheap considering its a dedicated, and their service is very good. if you get a good promotional day you can even get double ram. i have a modified plan, but it never went down since I started using it.

At the time, EssenceRO was looking for a new server and Softlayer already had some amazing deals at the time. Tira hopped onto a web chat with a salesman and managed to get bargain with him to get an incredibly cheaper monthly cost (it was already a promotion!).

My guess is that it's a very tight business and they were desperate for business. With a little bit of bargaining you can get really good deals ^^

Yukino

At HiddenDragon: Awesome ;). Good job to the Admins with that deal.

It took me a while to find a good deal as well. I was deciding between SIP and Frantech until someone from RBHosting helped me. We pay half of what we need to pay SIP and Frantech, and we get many free services as well <3. I'm just grateful to the hosting company even though our population isn't as high as we wanted yet. Only time will tell~

I'll give you an example  ;D

Go here: http://softlayer.com/dedicated/

According to their page our server would cost (monthly):
$199 - Intel Xeon 3220 (2.4 GHz Quad core)
$50 - 4 GB DDR2 Ram
$0 - 2000 GB bandwidth
$10 - 100 Mbps Uplink
Total: $260 /month

Guess what our monthly bill is? $180. We saved $80 a month (roughly one THIRD). Given that we've been with them for 11 months, we saved $880. Wowzors!

Their service is pretty good. Only 1 day of downtime since.

FrEeDoMe

I pay $68 for the following server and I can't complain.

- i7-920 Quad-Core
- 8 GB DDR3 RAM
- 2 x 750 GB SATA-II HDD
- 1 Gbit onboard with 100Mbit Uplink
- 3 TB @ 100Mbit per Month, after that 10Mbit

Peter

I pay ~$350 (CAD) a month for my 100mbit internet connection to my house. I have 2 machines for my RO server, and use approximately 500GB of bandwidth a month.
