Hello! I came across this  that has multiple proxy logins for players connecting from different regions. Does any one know how this is possible or any hosting companies that offer such services? And How much does it cost? Thanks in advance!

Daifuku.

Hello, we offer it for servers. We've been using it on our previous servers and current server.
Keep in mind that you will need proper hosts so that the proxies actually work. You won't have any difference using s*** vps hosting companies.

Who is "we" or do you mean wanhosting as well? How much does it cost though?

Do proxies even help? It seems like it would a wasted expense. At the end of the day, they still have to connect to the map server which isn't changing locations.

For a US player trying to play on an EU server it's either.
Player (US) --> Map Server (EU)
or
Player (US) --> Local Login Proxy (US) --> Map Server (EU)

Either way you're still having to connect to the EU server and you just have to hope that for some reason that route taken by adding the additional step of a proxy server is somehow faster than the route normally taken without the proxy.

How often is that really the case? I'd be curious to see some ping reports from players going directly to the map server vs using a proxy to go to the map server.

If the player has slow internet speed (usually latency is what matters) it can make a difference if connection between proxy and server is good.

Player <-> Server: 200ms
Player <-> Proxy: 50ms
Proxy <-> Server: 50ms

would reduce your latency to half.

I suppose it can theoretically if the player for some reason has a high latency route and it just so happens that a local VPS has a lower latency route to the main server. I'm skeptical that it significantly helps any sizable number of players. In my experience, players with bad connections or players that live too far from the server are just going to have high latency regardless of a proxy.

I haven't seen any data suggesting that it's worth the investment. Might be something for OP to consider when you factor in:

  • How much of an improvement your proxy is for high latency players. Is it 200ms down to 100ms? Or is it only 200ms down to 180ms?
  • How much a reliable, cheap VPS costs. I'm sure you can get one for around $5/month.
  • What number of people absolutely need a proxy to play.

At what point is it no longer worth the investment? If you're offering a $5 proxy and there's only 1-2 people that absolutely rely on it, is it worth paying $2.50 a person to have them playing on your server? Maybe at $5 a proxy and gaining 10 people who would otherwise not be able to play it's worth it. It's going to be different for each server owner.

TalonRO and NovaRO are both highly populated pservers and most likely rake in a bunch of money to where the cost of a few proxies wouldn't be too significant, but why don't they offer proxies? My guess is that it's because it's not very effective for 95+% of the population.
